They must have gotten the idea from Improve Everywhere, who did this in Grand Central Station in January of 2008. Search youtube for

They also did Food Court musical. Those were done just for fun, not to sell anything, and the Grand Central Freeze was done without the knowledge of the authorities/officials, making it quite impressive. Try it! They're fun to do!
