your concepts of how music works transfers......the idea of moveable chords and riffs transfers....scale intervals don't change just where you find them. A good exercise would be to take some of your favorite guitar ideas and find them on the steel....for example you probably use the pentatonic scale so find it on steel at both pedals down and pedals up positions....if you have favorite licks on guitar find them on the steel especially the ones you can move around.
Just started learning today. Thanks for the lesson I play guitar, and I understand most of the chords an d scales on that. Any tips on how to transfer what i know on guitar to this. Would appreciate it.
Do you have a video on tuning the E9 Pedal Steel? You mentioned that it was an important subject. I'm 60, and just starting to learn PSG, and I want to learn how to properly tune mine.
I just found your vidio ! Im just learning at 69,,LOL,,o well its something to do,,i live psg,,but all i have to work with right now is a Fender 400 > 8 strings,,9 & 7 left off everything is standered tuning ! I have played 6 string lead for about 30 years ! Thanks for these teeaching vidios ! Jim
Ok, so with standard 8 string pedal guitar the first string would be G#,2nd E, 3rd B, 4th G#, 5th F#, 6th E, 7th D, 8th B. When I say 3rd string it would be your 1st string. Grip 3,4,5 would be 1,2,3. I'm assuming your have your guitar tuned like that . If not then the grips won't be right. Not sure from your message what tuning you are using. If you have extra pedals you can use the pedals instead of knee levers to raise or lower the E strings. Have fun with it!
hi, I have been watching your'e videos for about two months and have learned a lot from them. i am 67 got a steel two years ago. played a 6 string for years. I just wanted to say thanks for all of your'e time & effort
I just got my first lap steel, and your videos explain a lot, even though some of it obviously has to be translated for a 6 string lap. Hoping to get a carter starter or a stage one in the next few months, and your lessons have given me a great heads up. Thank you
Thanks so much for your time, teaching this great stuff, very helpful, just got my steel guitar two days ago. Its a whole lot different then my six string.

i would suggest a bar 3 3/8 inches long and 7/8 inches in diameter...that is a standard 10-string bar.

Is the second neck tuned differently or is it just in case you break a string or for some other purpose?
billgrant1999 1 year ago
The second neck is a different tuning for a different sound...the front neck is tuned E9 and rear neck is tuned C6

On the fret line....listen to adjust the pitch as needed. When looking at your bar your view is distorted a little as to where the bar really is.
