I've heard that ducks are great for urban homesteading, because they are quieter, so they are less annoying to you and the neighbors, and they will eat a wider range of grass and bugs and things. Haven't tried it, but that's what I've heard. Apparently the eggs are almost as big as chicken eggs, and slightly richer. Lemme know if you've heard the same
@evansquiddie well most breeds of ducks lay bigger eggs than most chickens do but not as many the chickens still have the ducks beat in numbers of eggs ive got chickens here to my long term goal is to have enuff laying hens so that i can still have lots of eggs and chickens to eat im thinking next spring ill build a second coop so that i can reach the number of chickens we will need to haveim thinking for my family i want to have 28 hens and 3 roostersand the second coop will be replacements
I own it. That's the main reason I bought a house instead of continuing to rent. I think housing prices will continue to fall for several years, but there are just a lot of things you can't do at a rental house or Apartment
looking good man i suggest you get a good fish species and build an appropriate amount of space. i hate seeing salmon all stuck up together on salmon farms... highly degrading, not to mention a disease farm if any of them are sick.
@TheLordHumungus thats a little too far to save any money once you factor in gas. but if you have any questions feel free to ask. i have a friend who does this for a living, i can give you his website if you need. thanks for the vids. keep up the good work.
This looks great, I'm interested in both aquaponics and raising chickens so I'll be looking forward to your updates and progress with these. (I've also been considering raising goats for milk but I'm not sure about how much space is required, but if you have enough space that may solve your lawn mowing issue, lol)
Looks great man! Please post all your chicken experiences...they are something I can't wait to get into but can't have them in the city limits where I live. :(
Also if chickens aren't an option at all, you could look into pigeons. As far as I know they are usually considered pets and not livestock or poultry.
@TheLordHumungus hi i have chickens and they are awesome after they are in the coop for about 2-3 weeks you cold let them out of the coop for the day and when it starts to get dark they will go back into the coop usually on there own.make sure to clip there wings or they will be perching on the fence then youre neighbors will really dislike you.{you olny have to clip one wing}
I thought it was called agroponics, maybe its all made up names haha. I have some vids on this stuff as well. I think the vids were called "central Oregon prepper". You will wanna make sure you put a lock on that chicken coop box part, I have seen raccoons lift heavier stuff to get into shit.
I've never seen the term agroponics. I am putting a latch on the nest box for sure. I have read about some truly amazing things that raccoons and other varmints have done to get to chickens, so I'm not talking any chances.
@TheLordHumungus Your a funny guy. I was referring to the sound of chickens. If I hear a rooster in my neighbors yard while I'm trying to sleep, it will be the last time I hear it. I seriously doute that your neighbors live in fear of you.
Even though I live in a suburban area, we are legally allowed to have a few chickens. I think the legal limit is 4 or 5. So they if they do get pissed they won't be able to do much about it.
Good luck with your exciting project. Thanks for sharing :D

check the laws to make sure, because a lot of places will let you have a limited amount. like 2-4.
