to be honest Grandia is the straight up sickest, most innovative game of its generation. The only thing I would ask is this: Have you played Legend of Legaia? If not, it's a must-play. I would put star ocean in at #5, Legend of Legaia at #4, FF7 #3, Crono Trigger at #2 (though originally SNES), and Grandia at #1
Grandia is undoubtedly a great game. Very fun, but some ppl find it hard to get in to. I'm not a big fan of FF7. I lean more toward a classical RPG. I don't like the fact every single character can use magic. I like every character to have individuality. So FF9 is my favorite FF game. Just my 2 cents. :)

@rahungry There are 4 maximum at a time. The Grandia series is my favorite series of all time. Play it friend. You'll wish it had as many instalments as FF. 2 is espicially good, my favorite game ever made. One is great too though, if you like Miyazaki films you'll really enjoy Grandia 1, it has a similar feel to me.
Not a bad ranking. Only that in my opinion Valkyrie Profile needed to go above FF8 no matter what fancy graphics FF8 has. And that... well, I respect your opinion because you seem like an experienced RPG'er, and that Grandia is one of the few games of the list that I didnt play, but a game must be truly godly to go over FF7. It has been my 2nd in the ranking until very recently that I played Valkyrie Profile, which has a short story, but incredibly epic and touching. Anyway, at such level, any of these games are pieces of art.

Arc the lad 2 and final fantasy tactics are the ones missing that are obviously at least top 10. I don't get why people like chrono cross so much (granted, it had good graphics). Pretty good list otherwise.
No saga frontier 1 or 2, IMHO I thought saga frontier 2 was one of the best games for ps1 as far as gameplay and story. and the graphics are just beautiful.
Nice top 10 list, it's really hard to decide between FF7, FF9 and Grandia for top spot. All are so damn good that I would put them together on the 1st spot.
So many Squaresoft games. Too bad they started making crappy games since they merged with Enix. I mean, both of them made great games, but they just don't do well mixed together =/

@lamewing Dragon Age Origins, The Witcher, Elder Scrollsl. All amazing. :) Even Mass Effect is amazing but it is very action based. Great story and choices though with awesome characters. KOTOR incredible.
@UndercoverCracker All because all of the JRPGs (especially Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy VII) made RPGs popular overseas. Without games like these, the Western RPG genre would have had nothing to base itself on.
i disgree about 8, it didnt have the music that 7 or 9 did, but i still enjoyed it. and personally i realy enjoyed most of the characters. and thank you for putting 9 here. i think 9 might have even had the best music for ff, the characters were great, story, gameplay, everything was wonderful. one of my favorites.

Wild Arms and Final Fantasy VII are both better than Grandia. How on Earth is Wild Arms not in your list? It's not even down as an honourable mention, though it deserves much more. Koudelka would be a good addition to your list as well.
Great list, gotta agree with you on FF9! My fave installment in the series. The cast was the best and the battle system was the most balanced of the entire series and def on par with FF7's battle system!

No saga frontier 1 or 2, IMHO I thought saga frontier 2 was one of the best games for ps1 as far as gameplay and story. and the graphics are just beautiful.

Nice top 10 list, it's really hard to decide between FF7, FF9 and Grandia for top spot. All are so damn good that I would put them together on the 1st spot.

So many Squaresoft games. Too bad they started making crappy games since they merged with Enix. I mean, both of them made great games, but they just don't do well mixed together =/

All are nice games, but they are exactly what I described 3rd person action games with RPG elements as opposed to older style, true, JRPGs.

@UndercoverCracker I wish I could tell you that you were wrong, but the PS3 generation just hasn't seen the JRPGs like we had on the PS1 and PS2. I am so tired of 3rd person action games masquerading as RPGs, but that seems to be the trend these days. :(

@lamewing Dragon Age Origins, The Witcher, Elder Scrollsl. All amazing. :) Even Mass Effect is amazing but it is very action based. Great story and choices though with awesome characters. KOTOR incredible.

@UndercoverCracker All because all of the JRPGs (especially Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy VII) made RPGs popular overseas. Without games like these, the Western RPG genre would have had nothing to base itself on.

i disgree about 8, it didnt have the music that 7 or 9 did, but i still enjoyed it. and personally i realy enjoyed most of the characters. and thank you for putting 9 here. i think 9 might have even had the best music for ff, the characters were great, story, gameplay, everything was wonderful. one of my favorites.

@seppomuppit the 3 ps1 ff's are my personal favorites. but if youve only played 9 once, you should really go back and play it again, cuz the first time i played it i didnt really care for it, but the 2nd time it became one of my favorite games.

FFIX = easily the worst game in the series because of the REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY slow to start random battles. It's just plain BORING.

final fantasy IX was just especial to me, one my first RPG´and the best ever played
the story tough I didn´t understeanded it clearly in the very first time, still facinates me even today
(I was like 11 and toay I´m 19)

FF 7-9 were all awesome if you ask me I loved all 3, then 10 hit and I just could not get into it. Does anyone else believe that rpg's these days are nowhere near as good as they once used to be? I have the newest FF for ps3 and I must say its ridiculous how crappy i think it is versus 7-9.

Wild Arms and Final Fantasy VII are both better than Grandia. How on Earth is Wild Arms not in your list? It's not even down as an honourable mention, though it deserves much more. Koudelka would be a good addition to your list as well.

Great list, gotta agree with you on FF9! My fave installment in the series. The cast was the best and the battle system was the most balanced of the entire series and def on par with FF7's battle system!
