That old commercial used to say "There's nothing like the face of a kid eating a Hershey bar"... well, there's nothing like the face of that guy sitting in a nitromethane dragster.
Stellings and Hampshire , yessir! Bobby T ruined me for life by letting me get WAAAY tooclose to that car, gave me the hemi bug and it's never gone away : )
front engine drag rail = strap engine legs , rest your balls on transmission , and spin some tires next to your head then hope to god it all stays together.
@jeepers2655 they are up higher and farther back in funny cars, but yea i agree rear engine dragsters are alot safer if the blower pops you get all that flame and chunks of metal in the face at 300+ mph
I swear, I'm nervous as hell for that guy with that long beard. SOOO many different ways he could lose his face, working around that rail. Let's see, ummm.....catching fire from the zoomies, getting it ripped off by getting it caught in the blower belt, getting it sucked down the bug-catcher, and I suppose there are a few other ways we could find if I cared to look too deeply. God forbid, and hope his angels will keep him safe.
That's why I love drag racing. I can roam the pits, see the drivers and teams. Talk to them. Watch them wrench on the machines. And it has always been this way. And you can participate, too. Versus NASCAR who are full of untouchable snobs who just want to sell corn flakes and Viagra, and can't participate, just watch them go in a circle..
@Cojoness its a classic, thats the way they did it back in the 60s, fire breathing beasts, these thing sset unbelieveable speed records back then, i would be willing to bet this car would run high 5 seconds low 6 seconds in the quarter mile at around 225 mph
The old Hilborne bug-catcher injectors was the very first big-catcher injector system but they were dropped, early on, in favor of the 3-hole Enderle system.
@eduardolz31 those motors actually really don't get hot until they go down the track. that nitro is almost like running nitrous as gas in those motors that stuff doesn't hardly get hot for nothing. one of my friends as a 91 mustang running straight alcohol and he can go down the track probably 6 or 7 times before the temperature finally hits about 160 degrees. it's very amazing!!!
@moore96impala Nitro doesn't get hot?? Heat is horsepower and you better believe nitro gets hot, what guys like you don't understand is you can't just pour it in and go, you have to make changes to the engine and fuel system to get the real power. Alcohol is not nitromethane.
well except for ther flames from the exhaust, pump gas won't do that, and it won't make that popcorn popping soung either that sounds so fucking cool, and you would not get 8,000hp with no pump gas
That brings back the good 'ol days of 131 Dragway here in Martin, Michigan. The sights, the smells, the sounds, Ahhhhhhhhh The 70's: when you could go to the drags for less than 7 bucks and have enough money to eat and buy a few T-shirts. Jungle Jim, TV-Tommy Ivo, Don "The Snake" Prudhomme, The Swamp Rat, Burnout Bob, Hemis....Oh yea, the smell of Nitro & burnin' rubber....standing too close behind a jet car and almost becoming a crispy critter. Those were the daaaays - Edith Bunker
I mis-spent many weekends of my youth at 131...those shows John & Nancy put on in the 70's were amazing...Not to mention Mama Grivins "Sloppy Joes"...well, maybe we shouldnt mention them...
- - A friend of mine who knew Nancy's family would drive us to the races. Nancy always waved us through and never made us pay a dime. I will always be grateful to her and family for saving us hundreds of dollars: although we usually spent that money buying stuff anyway.
- - I think they put something in the fuel, and on the tires, that MADE us spend money. IT'S A CONSPIRACY MAN!
- - Now where did I put that Borg & Warner jacket?
Nitrous Oxide is a gas but isn't flammable, all nitrous does is at high temps, such as in a engine, breaks down and delivers more oxygen to the combustion process, more oxygen=more power.

You can say it is unburnt fuel but when nitromethane burns it produces hydrogen gas and that also burns in the exhaust. Hydrogen does burn clear but it produces light when it burns so that's y you see it
You are right about that it does release hydrogen gas and burns it, But what's really cool is when a Top Fuel car launches under load the Exhaust is so hot, around the 4000 - 6000 degree Celsius point, that it Hydrolizes the moisture in the atmosphere and burns that oxygen and hydrogen too.
actually those flames are from the combustion of the nitromethane. Because nitro is such a slow burning, slow expanding fuel, its still propogating when it is pushed out the exhaust port by the piston, hence the flames you see coming out the headers.
The flame color yellow/orange comes from the carbon that's part of a hydrocarbon fuel, and is caused by unburned fuel that exits the exhaust (due to cam timing overlap) but is then ignited late.
Non-carbon combustibles (for example, hydrogen) have a colorless flame.
Nitromethane is an otherwise usless industrial biproduct. When the dry lakes racers started to use it... it's only commercial use was... ( get this...) Drycleaning fluid.
