It is difficult to tell, who "stole" what from whom. There have been many peoples in the Middle East since ancient times: Persians, Babylonians, Jews, Greeks, Arabs, Turks, Kurdes, etc. (sorry, if I forgott somebody) and there have been influences on every side. We have today so many common songs in Greek, Turkish, Arabian and other languages and for many of them nobody really knows where they originally came from. There exists a common Eastern Medditeranean music and dance culture.
We do have many similarities with Gagavuz Turks and with Chuvash Turks. In fact many Greeks (the best of us) ARE pure Gagavuz or Chuvash Turks, and many Gagavuz and Chuvash Turks are of Greek origin. We also are related to the mongol tribe of Nayan Khan, the nephew of Gengis Khan. But we have nothing in common with Oghuz Turks (Ottomans) except very superficially. They simply impose their presence in the neighborhood, but not for long, because even the sand under their feet hates them.
@noigir It's the first time I'm hearing such a theory. Uncommon, but interessting. Where have you got those informations from? Is there a book or any other kind of source you can name?
Of course the word "Tsifteteli" is of Turkish origin and derives from "Cifteteli" my friend :-) Nobody said the opposite. I mention this on my article about the Greek Tsifteteli, where I also explain why the Greeks use this name. You can find my article on the English version of my webpage (you can see the webpage link on my video)
Well I think you misunderstood me; I wasn't trying to be aggressive. I'd like to learn if Greeks/Arabs have another etymological origin for the word or if it is only a loan word in those languages. Etymological origin may help us understand where/how it originated. I was replying to the post that asked who borrowed from whom. Well anyway never mind.
Sorry if I expressed myself wrong, but I didn't want to accuse you of being aggressive. I just wanted to say, that the only origin of the Greek word "Tsifteteli", that I know, is from the Turkish word "Cifteteli". But I don't know why the Arabs call the 8/4 rhythm Taksim also "Chiftetelli". Maybe because this rthythm is very much used in the Turkish music? (with the difference that the Turkish 8/4 is quick, the Arabia very slow).

I HAD TO INTERVIENE..DNA testing shows that greeks and turks are MORE related than the Turks from Central Asia. The Turks from central asian conquest imposed there cultural values, religion and linguistics upon the local populous. MEANING, We(Turks) are a majority mixture of Balkan, Eastern European, and Greek Whom have taken on a TURKISH identity. WE(Turks)are more related to eastern europe/balkan states/greece than even our CLOSEST turkic tribes by DNA.Facts speak, if ur an idiot dont speak
Of course! Some time in history, brothers chose each one a rock to live upon, a name, a religion and an identity, and then they started hating each other! Instead of making it easy for all and living together they started atrocities on each side, and as time passes, we fail to achieve progress.
I think its funny that 3.000 years ago, Homer told a story about a war, between Acheans and Trojans without taking sides, although he belonged to one! He just spoke of honour and the terror of war. Today we are so civilized that we cannot stay unbiased!!!
I am glad to find others that share the same knowledge and logic to see the obvious!
your correct....Turic peoples have a close .looks of Tibetan eyes...If you look at Bulent ersoys eyes you will see a resemblance of that...many "modern' Turks have green - blue eyes and , yes blond hair.............amazing , ......
this is interesting... i was always naturally interested in the reasons why people look a certain way in every country... it seems like you have some knowledge about that subject.. do you know of any websites that have this kind of information?
no no, in Middle Asia (mongolia) Ancient Turks used to have blonde hair and colored eyes too (of course not all of them) And now the people you see similar like Tibetans are Tatar Turks an Crimean Turks and they are common in middle of Anatolia.
I wish all wars are made like that.
Send your belly dancer troops with wine & raki! (not fat ones)
The Greek commentary was not possible to understand, but no problem :-) You are right, we are brothers and sisters and we have many common things in our cultures ;-)
Haha, right *lol* But it rather means "it limits the abolition of the public (or of the folcloric)", therefore I was wondering what gideross wanted to tell. But since he wrote that he doesn't really speak Greek, I can imagine, that he got this sentence through an automatic translator. Automatic translators are a catastrophy, folks never use them!
You are right, it is Candan Ercetin:-) I love her Greek-Turkish song interpretations. She did a great job on that CD with Chifteteli songs which exist both in Greece and Turkey.
I disagree with you. You can be plumped and be a very SEXY and BEAUTIFUL woman. (Don't pay attention to what fashion magazines say, ask men about that!!)Moreover, I think it is better to be plumped to be a belly dancer because you really can show your femininity. Chrissanthi is just beautifully shaped, natural, talented and sweet, simply PERFECT!
I think you are wonderful !!! can you teach me loool I live in denmark Im glad that you like your body it shows us that we all dont have to be skinny to look good !!!! Thanks for posting....
Chryssanthi, I love your attitude and energy. I just wish I could belly dance as well as you. Keep on doing what you do, because you do it great! I hate watching skiiny bellydancers who look more like strippers..the whole cultural aspect gets lost
Thank you Gitana :-) I'm practicing my own revolution against the main stream *lol* And believe me, there are many women (and men) out there, who find it relieving and refreshing ;-) So I'll just keep going on!
Chryssanthi, Just one more thing I have to say to you, and that is I fully agree that this skeleton look is induced by the media. And commercialism. How much money is wasted on weight loss products and how many can achieve the emaciated waif look? WHO WOULD WANT TO?? Poor girls.
Is her weight acceptable everywhere but in the usa where women starve to look like skeletons? I am Greek, and cannot look like a skeleton unless I am dead! REAL WOMEN HAVE CURVES!
Unfortunately the problem with the weight is not only in the USA. Anorexia is a global epidemy, created by the media and their controllers in order to keep women week. Because a thin body has no strength and it can be better manipulated and opressed. As you said, real women have curves! And real women have strength (in every sense)!
In certain ways weight loss can be good. Like if you are on the brink of getting diabetes or something. (My mum is :'(. So she has been trying for a while.) But, it's mostly used by the media so women can by the stuff that they are advertising - which may not really work. It's just mind control.
You are right budgie, but overweight is dangerous for the health only if it is really too much, like people who have antipositas. In my case it would start getting dangerous, if I would have 20 kilos more than what I have now. Slight overweight is contrary to heavy overw. healthy. The latest medical researches proved that slightly overweighted poeple are healthier, stronger, happier and live longer than underweighted and even normal weighted people.
Oh yeah, I didn't tell you how much I liked the dance! lol, I forgot to I got so much into what I was saying! I love the costume, suits you very well! :D the coreography fits the music very well, and the zills, sound like they were recorded with it (like they fit sooo well in!) :D
By the way, this is not a choreography, it is an improvisation :-) I never dance choreographies, I always improvise, so you will never see me dance exactly the same thing twice. Surely if I dance a song many times, some parts tend to be similar, but never the whole song.
Even though I don't have my videos up. I never do a coreography either. I try to, but I don't want to have to remember all this stuff. The music just tells me what to do. I'm trying to learn to play zills and dnce at the same time! It's hard it's like rubbing your stomach and patting your head at the same time!
Ever heard the song 'Polifoniko'? I don't speek greek. So, I don't know what they are saying! XD But, I listen anyways!
You are a beautiful and very talented dancer. I showed my two daughters your videos, and i really think it help raise their self esteem. I long ago have come to terms being full figured, and as you well know, we full figured women have no shortage of strengnth and no shortage of male admirers. It is hard on young women and girls these days. Where do you dance? You are surely beautiful. Are you Greek?
Dear Gitana. I agree that young girls have a hard time today. I was fortunate to be born and grow up in Greece in a time when Greek men adored curvy women, so I have different ideals in my head. As a teenager I was quite thin and there were quite some men telling me that I am too thin, while my mom who was curvy got very admired by the men (and women). Today the media force another ideal in our heads, but I don't give a shit about it. I like my curves and I'm not the only one ;-)

Well the name "çiftetelli" is Turkish.
çift: double, pair
tel: string
tel + li = stringed.
It derives from how it is played on baglama.
I'd like to know if Arabs & Greeks have an alternate origin for the word.

But since he wrote that he doesn't really speak Greek, I can imagine, that he got this sentence through an automatic translator. Automatic translators are a catastrophy, folks never use them!

It sounds like Candan Ercetin, or is it someone else? :)
Buzra03 3 years ago
You are right, it is Candan Ercetin:-) I love her Greek-Turkish song interpretations. She did a great job on that CD with Chifteteli songs which exist both in Greece and Turkey.

What does Sala-Sala mean?
I understand the rest.
Barbiequeen89 3 years ago
"Sala" means in Greek "hall" or big room. In Turkish it means something like "move move", if I remember right (a Turkish friend told me so).
chryssanthi 3 years ago
Thank you so much.
Barbiequeen89 3 years ago
No, sala has NO meaning in Turkish. SALLA with 2 ls means move your hips.
rayhanalhassan 3 years ago
Thank you very much Rayhanalhassan :-) I didn't know "salla" was written with two "l". My Turkish is very poor.

its not nesesery to be think to dance belly dance
you have to be sexy woman
and you are!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ALEXANDRASAM19 3 years ago
I disagree with you. You can be plumped and be a very SEXY and BEAUTIFUL woman. (Don't pay attention to what fashion magazines say, ask men about that!!)Moreover, I think it is better to be plumped to be a belly dancer because you really can show your femininity. Chrissanthi is just beautifully shaped, natural, talented and sweet, simply PERFECT!

Chryssanthi, I love your attitude and energy. I just wish I could belly dance as well as you. Keep on doing what you do, because you do it great! I hate watching skiiny bellydancers who look more like strippers..the whole cultural aspect gets lost
MedterraneanaGitana 4 years ago
Thank you Gitana :-) I'm practicing my own revolution against the main stream *lol* And believe me, there are many women (and men) out there, who find it relieving and refreshing ;-) So I'll just keep going on!

Chryssanthi, Just one more thing I have to say to you, and that is I fully agree that this skeleton look is induced by the media. And commercialism. How much money is wasted on weight loss products and how many can achieve the emaciated waif look? WHO WOULD WANT TO?? Poor girls.
MedterraneanaGitana 4 years ago
Is her weight acceptable everywhere but in the usa where women starve to look like skeletons? I am Greek, and cannot look like a skeleton unless I am dead! REAL WOMEN HAVE CURVES!
MedterraneanaGitana 4 years ago
Unfortunately the problem with the weight is not only in the USA. Anorexia is a global epidemy, created by the media and their controllers in order to keep women week. Because a thin body has no strength and it can be better manipulated and opressed. As you said, real women have curves! And real women have strength (in every sense)!
chryssanthi 4 years ago
In certain ways weight loss can be good. Like if you are on the brink of getting diabetes or something. (My mum is :'(. So she has been trying for a while.) But, it's mostly used by the media so women can by the stuff that they are advertising - which may not really work. It's just mind control.
budgiebudgielover 4 years ago
You are right budgie, but overweight is dangerous for the health only if it is really too much, like people who have antipositas. In my case it would start getting dangerous, if I would have 20 kilos more than what I have now. Slight overweight is contrary to heavy overw. healthy. The latest medical researches proved that slightly overweighted poeple are healthier, stronger, happier and live longer than underweighted and even normal weighted people.

Oh yeah, I didn't tell you how much I liked the dance! lol, I forgot to I got so much into what I was saying! I love the costume, suits you very well! :D the coreography fits the music very well, and the zills, sound like they were recorded with it (like they fit sooo well in!) :D
budgiebudgielover 4 years ago
Thank you budgie :-)
chryssanthi 4 years ago
your welcome!
budgiebudgielover 4 years ago
By the way, this is not a choreography, it is an improvisation :-) I never dance choreographies, I always improvise, so you will never see me dance exactly the same thing twice. Surely if I dance a song many times, some parts tend to be similar, but never the whole song.
chryssanthi 4 years ago
Even though I don't have my videos up. I never do a coreography either. I try to, but I don't want to have to remember all this stuff. The music just tells me what to do. I'm trying to learn to play zills and dnce at the same time! It's hard it's like rubbing your stomach and patting your head at the same time!
Ever heard the song 'Polifoniko'? I don't speek greek. So, I don't know what they are saying! XD But, I listen anyways!
budgiebudgielover 4 years ago
You are a beautiful and very talented dancer. I showed my two daughters your videos, and i really think it help raise their self esteem. I long ago have come to terms being full figured, and as you well know, we full figured women have no shortage of strengnth and no shortage of male admirers. It is hard on young women and girls these days. Where do you dance? You are surely beautiful. Are you Greek?
MedterraneanaGitana 4 years ago
Dear Gitana. I agree that young girls have a hard time today. I was fortunate to be born and grow up in Greece in a time when Greek men adored curvy women, so I have different ideals in my head. As a teenager I was quite thin and there were quite some men telling me that I am too thin, while my mom who was curvy got very admired by the men (and women). Today the media force another ideal in our heads, but I don't give a shit about it. I like my curves and I'm not the only one ;-)
