Why does the siren rotate to one direction each time she says "this is a test, this is only a test"? Why dosen't it rotate fully the whole time she is saying it?
@SpeakerPolice yah i did listen but was too late, i already posted the comment. I grew up in Romania and i was there in 1986 when chenobyl happend in Ukraine. was aweful, they gave us potasium iodine pills against radation.. was scary as hell.
1:52 *plays jeopardy theme song* 3:34 = ".....?" And no, I don't think Whelens are replacing everything else. I'm not sure but I think it's Federal things. The one FED Thunderbolt I guess it's called OR those are the ones being forgotten forever.
not terrific. just a bunch of modem beeps and a woman saying "this is a test". Only to find the actual wail of the siren towards the very end. Incidentally, it sounds much more like a Thunderbolt than a Whelen.
I counted...about five of these when my dad drove near a power plant over the weekend. While I was educating him about the different sirens and he told me about having to learn the different sounds the sirens use to signal with while working in a nuclear power plant, he mentioned that it seems like our tornado siren is tested once a week now. Overcautious, maybe, but I don't blame them after the close calls we had with Hurricane Gustav lol
XD! 11 seconds in are the DTMF tones that are designed to activate the other sirens in the area. And yes, during the test sequence, the siren rotates a set distance before each test. During actual operation, it cycles continuously.
whats the purpose of these sirens? is it like a hurracane warning or something? im from ireland and the only one of these we have is to call the local fire department reserves to the station in an emergency btw the sound always scared the hell out of me as a kid i remember hiding under the covers when i heard it lol
These are for an emergency evacuation in the unlikely event that the St. Lucie Nuclear Power Plant nearby experiences a significant failure (e.g. something that would cause irradiation of the nearby communities). And LOL, I would probably freak out too if I heard that and didn't know what it was for!
you cant easily just bomb a nuclear power plant end expect it to just blow up..... the core is actually about a 100+ feet below the ground so the most a reactor can to to be fatal is over heat and have a meltdown. that is why they have these sirens, so that when they start having problems on a major scae they activate them so everyone can evacuate before it leaks out enough radiation
That sounds about right, except for the reactor being that far underground. I'm pretty sure St. Lucie's reactors are inside the two giant reinforced concrete silos on the property.
Woah Nice.. I live an hour and 30 minutes away from a nuclear power plant.. I wonder what would happen if some one dropped a bomb on a nuclear power plant.. Scary thoughts.
I don't know what those are for, either! I was hoping someone would explain it to me. My guess is that the other sirens somehow pick up on it and activate. Dunno.
Most sirens use DTMF tones to activate. Whelens seem to output them over the speaker, it's weird.
They are for activation, and cancellation. Also they can be used to check a siren's condition where the siren is polled and it will send back a DTMF code if there's a fault.
Thanks for that info, I appreciate it. =) I haven't heard many sirens, but so far, these Whelens are the only ones I've heard produce the tones as well.
All that vocal warning for a mere 30 seconds or so of actual test.
