This is funny, I saw this video awhile ago. I saw Ernie and his son mike a couple of weekends ago at Norwalk and told them about this video and they had no idea they're on youtube. 99K views! lol
Get rid of that damn annoying-sounding two-step rev limiter (which f*cks up the cool sound of a manual shift car on launch) and it'll sound just like the good ol' daze!
like this kind of racing , s/ stock up thru the 80`s , m/ production , gas classes , altereds, pro stock . now 10.5 tire class . best dracing around !
Bobby Cross showed me the program from the 1971 US Nationals and there were 392 entries in Modified Eliminator alone. I think they ran a 128 car field. Unfortunately, the NHRA killed the best class in drag racing and gave us Super Gas.
Hi Mike. Great vid! I'm one of the publishers of Drag Illustrated and I will talk about this kind of drag racing until the day I die. Thanks again for a great post.
Hey QR3550, looked and both 1 and 2 of the Houston clips. That is the most modified drag racing I've been able to find on youtube. Fantastic stuff. Thanks.
Nascar doesnt run 11,500 or 12k rpm, make is 9,100 on the limiter :P thats just backfire what you see coming from their exhause, excess fuel that runs into the pipes when they get off the gas then get back on and it burns off
To shift a car in that position, you have to be the master of the machine with no mercy & not afraid of pain. I race a stick shift car myself & it only drives my fear away when I reach for the sky! Drive em hard & no mercy for the machine folks. Good luck.......
ya that wasnt clutch sparks but ive seen that too lol....its like on nascars you see the gas igniting a lot also when their up towards 11,500 to 12k rpms!!
Like Moparbeech said, that's header flames from the engine sitting on the rev limiter. It cancels the fire to random cylinders but there is still fuel flowing through those dead cylinders. Raw fuel mixes in the header collector and...... :)
Grump, agreed on the high-winding small block - MUSIC!
We have alot more video clips on our "umtrnorth" website.

Not many like this anymore. Reminds me of Greg Tabler's "Killer" Camaro and Paul Mercure's "Checkmate" Camaro Modified Production cars from the mid 80's. Nice video, got goose bumps!

Search "IHRA Modified Eliminator" for a bunch of high winding
dry hoppin' modified cars. Not trying to hijack your video, but this stuff is hard to come by. Enjoy.

Besides a top fuel engine on 98% nitro there isn't anything better sounding than a high-winding small block Chevy.

you need incredible talent to be able to keep shifting in a postition like that
Krahnic14 4 years ago
WOW! What RPM did you launch at? Had to be close to 9k or so. Amazing.
70camaro406 4 years ago
Oops, just read the full description. 10,400RPM launch?!? That's nuts! It sounds awesome. Cool clutch sparks on launch.
70camaro406 4 years ago
Those sparks I beleive is from the rev limiter cutting cylinders, and thats the unburnt fuel igniting from the headers.
moparbeech 4 years ago
