What a great song! A great play on words here. Wonderful lyrics Janet, only surpassed by your beautiful voice and accompaniment. It`s a beautiful song and very evocative. I loved it. I`m looking forward to catching up with the rest of your songs. Not because I have to... Because I want to.
I love how you manipulate the imagery of a bull fighter. It's a potent symbol which I myself have used in varying ways. I'm always impressed at the power of symbolism and how a talented artist can transmorph and mold a symbol to make it connote different things.
There's something potently sexual about the matador imagery that I like and that you used very well in this song Janet.
The strange this is, I didn''t understand the imagery of the bull fighter unitl after I'd written the song. But the subconcious mind (the song sort of writes itself) must grasp that in a way I didn't. I just wrote it from the standpoint of a person seeing a bullfighter on a Matador Motel sign. But you're right, the bull fighter, the red cape can symbolize all the sexual energy in the song. :) Janet
Most people have a tendency to intepret an autobiographical message in songs. The thing is, often their right but it's always direct and literal. Bob Dylan once said: "If you don't people to misunderstand you, don't create anything".
Yeah, this song is very different from 'Puddles." I like to write the lighter stuff, but I have to admit I'm fond of writing the darker stuff too. Thanks for listening, sweet friend. :) Janet

Hi Janet. This is another incredible performance on a lovely song. All your lyrics are so meaningful and beautiful. 2 thumbs up. you do have a way of making one live the words in their mind. Excellent.
Wow Janet that is an excellent song excellent guitar playing and singing awesome lyrics the song really came alive to me I could picture the hotel and people going in out hoping not to be found out great song and story telling Janet love it favourite list for that one thank you Janet my dear friend from Phil .
Thanks, Phil, glad you enjoyed this. And thanks for the favorite. I'm so glad that a musician of your caliber likes my music. Have a great day, friend. :) Janet
hi Janet. this is quite a good piece of lyric writing. you weave a story that holds our attention throughout. it's funny sometimes, the things we think we need when we are younger, risk, excitement, infidelety, variety. but at some point i think we gradually come to realize that our actions have consequences and as we from habits, we become the person we had not been. the "sculptor" of ourselves may be less beautiful than intended. peace dear, chuck.
Thanks so much, Chuck. I always love your observations. Yes, it's true. As we grow older, we start to realize how our actions affect others as you say. Getting older is a pretty good thing. Seems like we're able to adopt a lot of internal restraints we didn't have when we were younger. Hope you have a great day, my friend. :) Janet
A song like a story out of a film noir. Those shadows can be so alluring, oh how we love them shadows dimly lit in the middle of the afternoon with the curtains drawn like when watching Days of Our Lives in the afternoon, eating chocolate and feeling bad for not working but enjoying feeling bad, oh so naughty and wrong Janet!
My OH My J!! This is shameful...just shameful! But OH SO TRUE. I see it all the time. Well, not at the Matador Hotel! This is great. Love them minor chords that fit perfect with the lyrics. You can sure write some good stuff girl! mmm..mmm.mmm! T:)

Wow, what a cool comment, thanks very much, Jeff. Yeah, a lot of songwriters suffer from that affliction, from people believing every word they write is about them. :) Janet
Hi Janet! Your music is just so poignant and real. I love the feel of this one - a little bluesy. Great vocals, my friend! I really enjoyed this! <3 Babs
Janet, I'm always impressed with your songwriting, singing, and playing....this song shows another side of your talent that is very unique and absolutely spot on... love the lyrics... life's not all fun and games and this is one aspect of it that isn't shown nearly enough... excellent writing my friend...
Thanks, Randy, I'm glad you enjoyed this one. I love to write those dark story songs, and as you say, life is not all fun and games. I miss some of the old traditional country songs that folks like Johnny Cash used to make. He sang a lot about the darkside too of course, hehe. :) Janet
I loved this Janet! I've always liked the darker songs, and you wrote this so beautifully. So many great lines here... a couple of my favourites: "sifting for dreams through reality", and "trouble is you're always wantin more". You're such a great storyteller Janet!
Your talent is always so delightful and inspiring. Another great and super song. I love the music and your vocals. Very IMPRESSIVE. had to listen twice. It was just that good. 5 million thumbs up.

Hey, Duane, good to see you. I need to come check your channel when I get a chance. So glad you like this one. I like to write the dark stuff sometimes. :) Janet
Very good song, Janet. I like that line, She needs to count/To be his only one. It's funny how some people can't accept that a song is made up. I have been asked that question about some of my craziest songs, and I have to wonder what people must think about me. No one has asked me that about my aliens coming to earth or the cows coming home songs, but it could happen.
Hahaha, Don, yeah, people do think the craziest things when we put our songs out there. I don't think people realize that we draw from everything, parts of our own lives, yes, but parts of other people's lives that we've known. Glad you liked the "she needs to count,' line. I worked on that one quite a while. :) Janet
@songblurred - Don ....You mean you made up those stories of Alien Abduction? Nah couldn't have. Impossible. Definate abductee. The implant just above your left nipple will never be found and yet you still wonder how you produce 3 gallons of milk each day .....oooops ....did I let the cat out the bag? Theres a title for a song! But now we know why you write about cows.
Thanks, Lizet, glad you enjoyed it. I normally don't send shares, but I've had some people tell me that they e-mailed me a share, but I never got it. I think Youtube is messed up lately, and I know their subscription page is messed up too. :) Janet
Hey Janet, just beautiful. - a sad song in a minor key. What I heard was the tragic plight of humanity where lives are shipwrecked by our own choices. My mental image of the Matador is something less than the Ritz-Carlton, like a place you wouldn't want to die in. But it sounds like a place of death, weeping, gnashing of teeth. Really beautiful in a macabre kind of way. I'm going to go watch a Disney movie now :-) All the best my friend. You have an incredible talent for songwriting -Karl
Haha, Karl, going to watch a Disney movie, eh? Glad you liked this one. I love to write those dark story songs. Always love your thoughtful comments. :) Janet
It amazes me Janet that you take a subject that has been written about so much in so many ways and create something all your own. That, my dear, is talent! I like everything about this song. The lyrics are direct and straightforward but conjure up sharp images..the satin sheetsand the red cape. The matador motel...now that's a great symbol for the subject..duck and dive, fake and deke..pretty much like an affair! Big thumbs up Janet!
You always say the kindest thing, Vanessa. I always look foward to reading your posts. You know, I never thought about the Matador imagery and the red cape, but subconciously, I may have been using that metaphor. Always LOVE your observations. :) Janet
You're so sweet, Olga. Thanks so much. I know you are young, and the theme of this song is for older people Not that I'm saying you're not mature enough to enjoy it, you are. But you've inspired me to write more songs for younger people, like my songs "Fireflies, Twinkling Bright." My next song will be "Splashing In Puddles In the Rain," and I wrote it for you and some of my younger viewers. Hope to have it up in the next two weeks. Thanks once again! :) Janet
Thanks so much, Kev! Yes, I remember that you like those dark story songs, my favorite too. I need to come visit your channel, it's good to see you again. No problem about the unsubscribe. Youtube for some reason has been doing with that subscriptions. Others have told me the same thing. :) Janet
You have a brilliance about you that is not recognized by yourself....or maybe it is and you are just being very humble. When your voice hits those hi notes towards the end, you capture the audience like a deer in the headlight unable to move. This is a great story song....and I love em sad...the sadder the better...lol. Very well done Janet.
Hey, Patrick, you're good for my ego, hehe. I think I'm hard on myself 'coz I can hear where I could have done a better job, but I guess that's what we songwriters do, always hearing what we think we should fix, hehe. I sure appreciate you always being so encouraging to me though. You're so talented, and I really respect your opinion. :) Janet
You know Janet Tom is spot on what you have is an incredible sound that people have to listen to your voice compined with the guitar is brilliant and you wrap them around your work like no other and that makes you special no one but no one can do your work like you and your lyrics are very powerfull and moving i could listen all night because you are you good on you have a great week peace to you and hubby.
Thanks, Yogi. I always appreciate your encouragement. And like I told Patrick Moran, when people like you and him give me that type of encouragement, it gives me confidence because both of you are so very talented. I hope you have a great week yourself, friend! :) Janet
Hi Janet...wow, another good one! Love your cheatin song...and the name 'Matador Motel'...really fits in in the flow of your awesome song. Two thumbs up!!
Thanks, Kathleen, I'm so glad you liked this one! Many people like my lighter stuff, but every now and then, I gotta write something a little darker, hehe. Always great to see you. :) Janet
You can just imagine it sunday night cold chill in the air and the fog coming down and it weighs like a ton of lead on your heart and conciance but you get a cold sweat come over you and you realize just what you have done for that short time of feeling young just one more time now you have to face the week ahead and the lie's start.fantasic Janet thats the picture that was painted in my mind brilliant .peace.
You know what Janet,....I really like the way you 'sneak up on the song. You build on the intro, the first line, the concept,.....very well done. Peaks the interest,...I want to hear the story,.....the slow cadence on this one gives me plenty of time to fill in my thought process around the framework you're laying down. I'm completely standing in front of some adobe dive joint with horns over the entry thinking I'm the man and knowing I'm losing big time. So well done Janet,....so well done.
Thanks, Tom, I was worried about this one. Folks seem to like my lighter stuff, but I have to write a bit of truth, and there's truth in dark dysfunction, lol. I'm glad I could take you to that adobe joint, haha. I worried about my playing too. Sometimes, I can play, and other days, I'm missing the mark. You're always so encouraging, my friend. :) Janet
@onewomanandsomesongs ah,....you're such a girl! This is a work of art! Serious. You are accompanying your guitar with your voice. This isn't a guitar showcase,...it's a song, an expression of your thoughts on this topic. And you're doing an excellent job in that regard. If you want to be a guitar player,...quit singing,....ride on your licks. It's a combo thing Ms. Chitty,......guitar backs up vocals,...vocals tell the story. And in that regard, you are excellent. One of the best.
Tom, you're probably my best friend on here, lol. I like the fact that when you love one of my songs, you'll tell me like you're doing here now. And when you don't like it so much, you've told me the truth there too. Always appreciated! So you made me feel better tonight, I'll just go with it as you say and quit worrying about the playing so much. :) Janet
@onewomanandsomesongs well, you know,..I don't really have much inclination to blow smoke up your skirt. You ain't not guitar player,..never will be. But you play enough to backfill your songs and your lyrics, your message and your vocals are where it's at. One of my friends is a fabulous singer,..great songwriter,...and all he does is use the guitar to fill the voids. It works to the max. Songwriting is really not about skill on the guitar, or the piano or whatever. It's about the song.
I think that's really true. And Bill says the same thing. It's about the song. He says to me, 'You're not Slash playing a guitar solo.' Especially in folk type music, people just want the story to unfold. The weird thing is, it seems like people are starting to dig just the simple acoustic stuff and they're tiring of the fancy stuff. Don't know why that is, but it seems to work on other channels too. Janet

:) Janet
onewomanandsomesongs 5 months ago
@onewomanandsomesongs well, you know,..I don't really have much inclination to blow smoke up your skirt. You ain't not guitar player,..never will be. But you play enough to backfill your songs and your lyrics, your message and your vocals are where it's at. One of my friends is a fabulous singer,..great songwriter,...and all he does is use the guitar to fill the voids. It works to the max. Songwriting is really not about skill on the guitar, or the piano or whatever. It's about the song.
tomvband 5 months ago
@tomvband
Janet
