Ndamukong Suh works out with one of those. A pole pig is perfect to put on a metal plate, put a sling around it and pull it. It will boost explosive strength. A good workout.
NST is more safer then Pole Pig that can very easy KILL YOU. NST can kill only when you tuch secondary with both hands. And this Pig can kill you with just one tiny tuch. So use Pole Pig only if you knew what you are doing. If was on your place i would make one very big Tesla Coil. :) -Just do not do anything stupid. If you are planing some Tesla project just contact me.I will help you. :D
No it can't, not unless one of the secondary leads is grounded. Also a NST is NOT isolated output. It is center point grounded. What makes the polepig xformer more dangerous is that it can handle putting out a LOT more power (that is if you reduce the current limiting to allow more current flow). A NST is internally current limited so nothing you do can increase it's output (short of increasing the input voltage, but that will overheat the NST).
First off, where the hell did you get a pole pig? Second of all, why are your shorting it out? I've seen these things go off like a bomb. You are taking your life in your hands.
Are you in California? Pole pigs in most parts of the country seem to use single-ended pole pigs that operate between one primary phase and neutral, but here in California the standard practice is to use double-ended transformers like yours and connect them phase-to-phase. I assume the reason is that the drier climate means that grounds aren't as reliable. Where did you get your pole pig?
You're being fairly careful, but you could do better. Get AND USE a pair of power company lineman's gloves. Always test them; even a tiny pinhole can flash through. Also get AND USE a real "hot stick", a fiberglass pole with various attachments for manipulating fuses, bolts, clamps, etc.
Better yet, set everything up so you don't have to handle anything with your hands except the switch that turns it all on and off.
You obviously have a bright future, please don't throw it away.
its a pretty small arc for a big transformer like that. MOT's, NST's and many other HV transformers would easily create a arc as big/bigger than that.
That looks like a 23KV primary pot. The primary bushings are longer. However, some utlities use the longer bushings in lower volteages around coastal areas where the salt buildup is prevalent.
I got my first transformer at age 15. It was a Westinghouse 1 1/2 KVA CSP (completely self protected) with a secondary breaker under the oil, a primary fuse and lightning arrester and a tap changer to either raise or lower the secondary voltage in step increments. My dad, who worked for the power company got the obsolte unit for me and caught me doing the same thing you are doing. I got my backside busted for that. I saw pics of what one could do if it exploded.
I tested the pole transformers with primary voltage and also backed them up as you did for the Power Company I worked for. Did you not know that a short in that oil transformer could possibly blow the top off and into the air along with ignited oil?
Don't tell me that it cannot happen. It has and I have been a witness to it happening to our shop steward. Just because you have a few amps on the secondary does not mean that it cannot explode the pot.
He jacked a UI truck for the transformer. That or if it fell off he snatched it up and ran LMAO JK. I was hoping to get one one those my self for an electric project.
Furthermore, if he is 10, by the time he is 20 he could probably build a entire grid. The key to making the most of your life is starting very young. I did too.
@BusyWithBiz right on!! When i was 12 I built a co2 laser and that was in 1975...then In 1976 i built and xray machine and that same year I built my first Tesla coil. I kept the experimenting and went to high school and won all 3 years science fairs and was offered scholarships etc. Then while I was in College I developed my first Ion driven laser with magnetic undulations which I believe was the forerunner of the Free electron lasers of today. I graduated and continued on the work for DOD.
@BusyWithBiz While working for the DOD I experimented at home and created a table top xray laser so as you can see this all will lead this boy to a bright future!! just make sure you are smart and safe at what you are doing with those lethal; voltages etc..... Good Luck!!!!
Why are there people in here giving him a hard time about his age? If he is young, so what, the kid's obviously very skilled and knows what he is doing. Keep it up, and becareful.
@BusyWithBiz Yes, he's obviously skilled but he's not using the standard safety gear and precautions that power company linemen use around these things. Occasionally even they get killed.
It would only take one teensy little mistake. Like having some dirt or moisture on that pole he's using. Or forget and leave the power on while he works on the high voltage connections.
@BusyWithBiz Shit I was dickin around with electricity at his age. Never did get a pole pig though. lucky bastard. Anyway if the dude can do it safely and have fun at his age imagine what he's gonna be like once he gets out of EE school or something. Motherfuckers gonna be buildin tesla coils the size of skyscrapers. XD keep it up man.
Ever tried to run that little monster with a bit more power? i.e. using two or more MOTs in parallel just to obtain bigger currents on the secondary?
And how about using a voltage doubler at the output? Pretty simple circuit. Get yerself some HV diodes and caps and google for "greinacher voltage doubler" ;)
thanks. Actually yesterday i tried out my new 25kva ballast. Unfortunately i am having some issues about the main wires to the house so as soon as i get that worked out i will post a vid. PS, the arcs stretched out to 3ft
Q: When does a coil (or a transformer, which is basically a coil as well) draw the most current?
A: When it gets switched on, and the core is magnetically not saturated.
This is why sometimes fuses might blow, when for example you start a big motor, or switch on a highly inductive load.
Even if the average nominal current is quite low, the rush-in current might be 10...20 times higher than that. So a coil that draws 5 ampscan have a rush-in of 50.
To avoid too large rush-in current, do the following:
use two loads in parallel, the smaller one to start the "beast" and let it saturate for some seconds, and then, with a separate switch, connect the bigger load which will then take over the full operational current whithout blowing fuses due to current peaks when saturating the magnetic core.
Maybe you should check the current ranges with an amperemeter capable of peak detection or (better) with a scope.
Dude why dont you just mind your own business and pick on a kid your own size. Excuse me that i dident say arc instead of spark, oo ........gee after all that is a excellent way to judge a persons ability and knoledge with electronics.

You do get bigger from MOTs, but this is about 1/3 the power at about 5x the voltage, making it much more dangerous
