Some old cartoons were post-synched like these Lantz cartoons and the Fleischer cartoons, while other studios like Disney pre-synched their films to music and dialogue.
@baxterfilms Walter Lantz was an cartoonist, animator, film producer, and director, best known for founding Walter Lantz Productions and creating Woody Woodpecker. Hi is a legend... im sorry you don´t know him....
I already know who Lantz is, I was saying how I never knew he EDITED the cartoons as well. That's a busy guy as evidenced here. He produced, helped write and directed this cartoon.
@UltraBibendum if you mean anime from the orient its been made this way forever even until now some japanese cartoons still use it except the voices are done earlier to make them more accurately match the pictures
wow animation came way before I was born. today it is easier with computers to animate :) Specially backgrounds is hard to do sometimes. I'm learning animation. I use to have a toy light-up desk for tracing. Wish I kept it. ^-^ I would love to get into cartooning studios :D I used to watch Bugs Bunny and Mickey Mouse when I was 5 :)
Really fascinating movie. First time I've seen a thorough behind-the-scenes from any studio but Disney. Seems like the original cartoon was in b&w. Any idea when this was filmed? BTW, even the experts can goof--note how the bat jumps from behind the catcher's glove to in front of it at 8:46. Odd that they synched the dialogue to the animation rather than the other way about.
Thumbs up if you heard the piano player screw up

The cartoon that is being made here appears to be the early 1936 cartoon "Soft Ball Play". The documentary could have been filmed in late 1935 or so.

So they did the dialoge afterwards? That's... odd. XD
But that does take some extra effort from the animators.
Shows how much they care. :)

People really put their heart into entertainment in those days,
but now we have better technology so people
take the easy way out and the quality suffers.

Nice to hear the legendary Lowell Thomas doing the narration.

I think the suits are for show because of the restricted arm movements.

COOL

Did animators actually go sit down and work on an animation table with their suit & tie on? Or is this just for show?

I think it was in the late 1930s, but I'm not sure. There were several Oswald the Lucky Rabbit cartoons made in the early 30s.
