most of the time, but it can be a good way of trickling along between some really tricky ruts where you need the slower speed to get in some fast steering.
It's all down to practise really, there general rules but every situation you come across needs to judged differently. Sometimes a decent needs a higher gear as torque is to high and ends up locking the wheels and you skid out of control.
I had the pleasure to off road in a 1988 Range Rover... fell in love... now becoming an owner of a newer vehicle, the 2004 Disco, can't wait to try her out on some real off road conditions....
Why does every body think, that his 4x4 brand is the best offroader? You must look at the technical criteria. For example, a 4x4 wich has axle lockers will allways be better offroad then one with open diffs on the axle.
so 40 years go every off road car had no diff locks? range rover in 1970 was the first 3 diferential 4wd suv with center diff lock, nowadays land rover has one of the best traction control sistem wich has also center and rear diff lock
I learned to drive in 1965 with my first Land Rover, which my 94 year old father still uses as his daily driver. I prefer my R.H.D. '67 IIA even in the U.S. John Palmer
I agree, the LR Series is an amazing 4X4. I own a 1969 Series IIa. I took it through some trails that I doubted I would be able to pass but my Landy pulled me through with no problem. I'll die before I sell my Landy!!!
collin; this site unfortunately doesn't support such 'chat' I go by the same speud 'teflon' on most of the Land Rover Forums, and have my own webby Teflons Torque, which has the usual double u's infront a hyphen in the middle and the fullstop commercial suffix! give me a shout on series forum on LRO Series board or LRBoards Landy Chat links to both variousely on my site.
i want a landrover, unfortunatly it would be my first car and i dotn think my parents would like it, mind u i wouldnt be one of the fools who drive them around towns, along with the showy 4x4 tht are never taken off road, mine would definatly be offroading helping out on the local shooting estate. Does any one have a landy and could post commenting on how they act as a normal car
Just remember it's not a normal car and you'll be fine - if you want to know more post up on lr4x4 forum and I'm sure people will help you with info about whatever you're looking at.
i have a 1970 series land rover and i love it as a normal car. Is a versatile vehicle but unfortunately is a high fuel consumer... I'm very happy with it, contact me if you want more info...
My first car was a Land Rover, and my parents thought it was a good thing. It slowed me down, it didnt matter if I dented the bodywork, and it was an easy vehicle to learn to fix. Bits are cheap. Tell your parents this and they should approve. Dont tell them that it will leak oil all over the drive, and that after 24 years after leaving home (in my case)and despite living 300 miles away from them, my parent's garage is still full of my Land rover bits! This will not impress them.
i'm getting one of these for my first car. i learnt to drive in a disco 3 so the size doesnt matter, but the best thing is, i was quoted £1650 fully comp on a 1970 seriesII, so there dirt cheap.
Does anyone happen to know how much a decent, running series 2A lwb model would cost? I live in the US, so I'd have to import it, but I don't mind if it's not too expensive.
Motortrend did a spot on non-jeep classic 4x4s in which they listed $9k or so as the rate for one in moderate condition. It's often more, mine was free from a relative but required a complete rebuild including frame. They exist in the US, but aren't quite as common as overseas.
Hi, mate. you got one yet? Im bout the same age as you and ive just bought a series 3 petrol. my dads been driving the things for 30 years for work so he knows his way around with spanners. weve fixed the starter motor today and taken the brake drums off for new shoes and slave cylinders. insurance i cant seem to find what group they are. It seems to be either group 2 or 5 but different places say different things. my dads disco 2 is a lot better off road tho.
ive had two since i posted that lol (and changed my screenname). i was lucky in that mine only needed new starters and it was goood to go. (helpful tip is the starter from the series two will fit ford sierra and vice versa). my insurance was dead cheap, but im not sure what group it is. Sorry

I Love the classic British understatement at 1.40: "A fairly fast run may be the answer hey-ar"...

Fanstastic pair of vids. They show just what the classic LR can do. Excellent, good fun, and true old fashioned British style. Need more like these!
