Lol.. gun experts always do tend to over explain the act of defending yourself, I follow the following rules, center crosshairs if possible, or if forced to fire from hip.. aim straight, and use your body to naturally gauge the aim, like the natives used to aim their bow shots.. the brain sort of.. auto compensates if you practice a bit.

And yes, I am serious.. of course shooting from the hip isn't very ideal.. but give it a try at the range some time, you will find that you adapt quickly.
