Not sure if any of the critics on here are aware of Cee-Lo Green's career. From Gnarls Barkley, to his global success as a solo artist, he's established himself as a fine talent among artists nowadays. As a fan of Cole and Cee-Lo, I love this song to bits, it's got the the groove and rhythm that the original made up for in it's melancholy and lush (no pun intended) tone. Both songs are great, and I don't think that this remix diminishes the quality at all. Great job Cee-Lo, long live NKC!
BECAUSE THESE PRODUCERS DECIDED TO "RUIN" A CLASSIC..IT MADE ME DISCOVER A GREAT SINGER.. I THANK YOU PRODUCERS THAT DO THIS IF IT WASNT FOR YOU GUYS SAMPLING.... PEOPLE LIKE ME AND OTHER YOUNGER PEOPLE WOULD NEVER FOUND OUT ABOUT NAT KING COLE...
As a modern day crooner and performer of this song as well as others in the Nat Cole cataloge, I do love Lush Life in It's original form. On the other hand though, I am a big fan of the Verve Remix projects. This remix ranks right up there with those. What a fresh new face on an iconic jazz piece. Kudos to the mix master. This song still astounds me in the single fact that Billy Strayhorn was only 16 when he wrote it!
@juliyard1 with the millions of jazz standards that have been interpreted a million times by a million artists, surely you can look at this album from that perspective - different artist's interpretations....it's a fun little record, especially that Cut Chemist edit...give it a chance!
I am the biggest Nat King Cole fan on the planet now he's gone I think this is amazing and will introduce him to a new generation. Dont delve to deep , Nat can sing thats a given so actually do the new overlays fit...Yes! I can imagine dancing my ass off to this in a club on a saturday night. Listen to the structure & timing it works and it is great I would never have imagined nats songs against this break beat but he's simply been brought into 21st century bit like Shirley Bassey well done all
I am not any more 20 years old, but I have to admit I love this sound!... Nat's voice and the controtempo with that beat makes the final result so very attractive and fascinating!
OK, i love the Johnny Hartman/coletrane version, and I love Nat's version too, but you know what? those still exist. This doesn't take those away, or take away from those wonderful recordings. It just adds to the possible. If it's not your thing, that's fine, it doesn't have to be. But it will point people back to those great recordings in a way that no lectures about their greatness ever will. So cut the self-righteous lectures, please.
i love the song. but i'm trying to know well what does it mesn really. is it about how love isn't there any more? was about how money became everything without love?
To elaborate, i'm talking about comping chords on a piano. You don't play the root, the bass does. I'm suggesting learning to comp the chords for Lush Life. I really feel it would be a great experience. It's hard to hear Lush Life tossed over a pentatonic bass line played over and over. It's like throwing a Caravaggio in a fire. In 500 years, Strayhorn will be studied like Mozart. The Charlie Parker Omnibook will be studied the way the Bach Chorales are. Dig a little. Try Aebersold.
back up, step off. I've sang this song. you try it. Johnny Hartmann did the ultimate version. Get his album with Trane, Marvin's "I Want You", Isley's "Heat is On", and you can be a true player anywhere...Music lesson; this song is quicksand for the week. Somebody fucks this song up every day. Every day. Cee-lo is true genius. still, with his inestimable talent he may get it wrong. One thing for sure is that he has respect. Jazz snobs, sshhh. You sing it. Blah blah, you sing it.
i hate to be a hater, but this does illustrate a huge shortcoming of hip hop, or whatever you are calling this. you take the most harmonically complex standard ever written, and you throw it over one chord with some pentatonic cliches over it.
try this - learn the chords for Lush Life on the piano, 9ths and no root, then write a song about Strayhorn composing this piece in his teens, avoiding his alcoholic father, surrounded by racists and homophobes. basic jazz harmony combined with your beats will blast off. i know i'm talkin smack i gotta be me
WhatAboutJazz. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing. "9ths and no root" means nothing. I'm no genius, but with an honors thesis writing big band charts with a legendary saxophonist, I can tell you with certainty that you're bullshitting. The "roots" are there, and every harmonic extension there is. "Basic Jazz Harmony" is "I got rhythm" changes and the AABA 32 bar tin pan alley song form. This is a miracle of unique creation, pure, devastating classic. The song will take care of itself.

The stuff that passes for talent these days is amazing.
this is a good example of how to ruin good music.
all these people are un-talented clowns!
is it true natalie did this to pay for her kidney transplant?
Sad.
