holy fuck i remember that game i mourned for months. nailbiting! Give it to the English, i thought they were gonna let johnny score all their points like they had the whole 2003 RWC, but they worked hard for that win.
413 Australians are a bunch of wankers, disliking the single most important moment in rugby history. I'm Scottish, and it's still just as good as the Grand slam in 1990, if not better!!
weather is shit, women are ugly, royal family are imbred (like all royalty), football team are constant chokers and you will be lucky to win another world cup for the next 40 years. You know why? SA, NZ, AUS! OH wait you just got good at cricket again...suppose there will now be a montage for that featuring all the highlights from the test against India
Hahahahahahahahah and I suppose if there is a shitty montage video highlighting the 15 best rugby players in the world it would feature every English player in the run-on side for the 03' world cup final complimented by the soundtrack to blade....you USED to own a 1/3 of the world, you used the be the greatest empire on the planet and you USED to send all your convicts to a dry little island. Now all the convicts are your own problem, burnt down half your major city, your economy is fucked...
For us English it was the greatest moment in rugby history- it was the culmination of long years of development- trial and pain- it was the proof that a bunch of veterans can lift the most coveted trophy in rugby- that hard graft can overcome flashy play and team spirit is more important that the individual.
I did feel cheated at the time when we played Australia as I would have much rather have played the All Blacks in the final- but that's how it went.
not the greatest moment. For england maybe but not around the world thou in saying this was a great moment and coming from nz i was cheering the english on like hell.
The trouble with some Englishmen is that an unsavoury arrogance starts to appear when their team is doing well. It was a great drop goal considering the pressure at that moment but I question whether it is the greatest moment in rugby history other than in some Englishman's minds. More importantly actually is that England won at all under such biased refereeing and all out cheating by the Aussie pack. It spoilt a great game being a momentous one.
greatest moment in rugby history? Well if we're to be subjective...I have to say Mike Catt's transformation into Jonah Lomu roadkill is a pretty great moment =)
Althrough the island of australia is larger its population is significantly smaller...so there is in fact a larger pool of players in england. So i guess that proves australia is better at rugby?

@Tyrtaeus2 Wilkinson 'sed to be' a VERY good defensive player ... He's been too riddled with injuries since the world cup to be classed as a good defensive player now.
@halfimpster beat u every time we met u from 200 up to the end of the world cup same with south africa and with new zealand we put record points on wales with our third team lost narrowly to france with our second team won the 6 nations in 2000 2001 and the grand slam in 2003 and then won the world cup. yer we're shit...
this isnt the greatest moment!! what about ireland's grand slam what about scott gibbs try and jenkins conversion in the final minute against the english in 1999 those are th greatest moments
Last comment clearly posted by someone who found drop goals so easy that they only warranted 1 point, guessing some international team snapped you up straight away
@timgordontube Its not about whether or not drop goals are easy, its about fans wanting to see attacking running rugby with lots of tries. If drop goals were worth a point then teams would kick them a lot less and run the ball more.
isn't it ironic that in a game like rugby, you find the greatest moment ever a drop goal? i won't stop campaigning until drop goals are worth 1 point.
@avn33 If you want to stop campaigning, watch the NRL game Sydney Roosters Vs. Wests Tigers 2010 (finals), the drop goal is for 1 point to equalise and send the game into extra time with only one second left.
ha ha .... wilkinson kickin , who would have thought it? With a rave tune over the top, chav tastick!! How did you get on sellin that caravan you fuckin pikey?
It's amazing how it's now 8 years since that final and the aussies are still pissed about it. Hilarious. Good job no one mentioned 2007 or the ashes or the ashes before that. See how many upset aussies have a go at that. LMAO
Its a good moment for the English , but check out t Gareth Edwards Try in the 1973 Babarians V ALL Blacks match. Probably one of the greatest feats of Rugby ever, certainly far more spectacular then Johnnies last breath drop kick.
notice though that England is a smaller island than Australia and so it is harder to get good rugby players as there are less to choose from and so this proves that the English are better at rugby
Whilst I agree that isnt the greatest moment ever in rugby, Gareth Edwards Baba's try was SOMETHING ELSE after all, I do think that is maybe the greatest winning score ever in rugby. People can say England are boring, but in the top end of a major sport, when has playing with style ever been the most important thing? I dont hear people screaming with rage when Holland fail to win the Football WC, because they arent the best team even though they may be the most exciting. So why is this in rugby?
Yeah look how badly we did against Australia without him, oh no I think we kicked their convict asses back to where we sent them in the first place! X
@timgordontube keep living in the past, its probably the only thing that will comfort you living in that shithole of a country you call england. its such a shame that a country full of convicts can be so much better than yours. mhmm the irony is delicious
i may be an enlgand supporter but by itself this is clearly one of the best moments in rugby. Te climax to one of the best playedgames of rugby and it just happened to be it was a final as well, u southern hemisphere lads can stop hating.... and yes gareth edward's try was bloody amazing
This is the best moment in my opinion...@twatcole there have been many great moments in rugby my friend but none with as much significance as this one...other than possibly Joel Stransky's drop goal in the 1995 World Cup final.
Not to mention Australia's best second rower since John Eales (Vickerman) is coming back into the side, we have a number 7 that is not only rivalling but out-playing the fading Capt McCaw, a backline with arguably the best attacking ability in world rugby at the moment, a lineout that challenges everyone. Our front row can match it with anyone- as long as it is our no.1 front row- Robinson, Moore (or PN), Alexander. All our other props and hookers have a long, long way to go. Lend us a couple???
@chucka1984 ye i agree, we got young players now and soon the wallabies will have a team than will whip everyone's ass. the 1st choice front row matching any size and strength, the great lock dan vickerman partnering with james horwill(or Sharpe) back in, a competitive back row with Bid bad Elsom, young guns McCalman and Higginbotham, and the one and only BAM BAM (DAVe P). plus a young firing back-line with great attacking ablity will bring some greater moments
Additional: Since that World Cup the whole Southern Hemispere has wised up to your tactics England, as has the IRB and most of the refs, i.e. keep it in the forwards until a maul is collapsed and knock over a penalty.
Trouble is- you lost Neil Back and Johnson straight away. That is the reason you haven't beaten the AB's since, and have been lucky in all wins against the wallabies and the boks 2004-present. It's time for ol' England to chance their hand at running rugby- or continue to lose
Yeh... that fucken drop kick... Still wrenches the Australian rugby lovin' stomach every time we see it.
Look... It's magic that England (just like with soccer- or football) have won a world cup in union. For ever England will hold on to that one victory and be filled with nostalgia. But.. they will never, ever win another World Cup again.
Finally.. The English team that won the 2003 cup was not as good as the 87 AB's, the 91 or 99 Wallabies, nor the 95 or 07 winning boks. Out.
@chucka1984 True...not as good as...better....the only team that would have given them a match were the '99 Aussies...similar side....total class and clinical as they come. To compare the '07 Boks especially is laughable tbh. As a whinging Pom I agree we aren't going to see an English side come close to that in my life time or the '05 Ashes team either :) We don't win often-let us bask in nostalgia when we do.
Btw I have just placed a bet on you lot to win next year...find a front row quick
@crazzzyyyfoooolll Rubbish. Crazy Fool. You speak as if the '03 English side were the greatest team to ever take the field... Greatness has to take longevity into consideration.
2004 English Rugby tour of Australasia-
1st Test- NEW ZEALAND 36 ENGLAND 3
2nd test- NEW ZEALAND 36 ENGLAND 12 (oooh... improving from last week...)
3rd Test- AUSTRALIA 51 ENGLAND 15
Wise man for backing Aus for next year. I have too. With Moore and Polota Nau back in the side the front row is peachy.
ahhh yes... the one man team that is england. where would england be in the sporting world if it werent for her few individuals she seems to rely on. another example is their one man football team that is Rooney. wilkinson is over-rated and looks fucking ridiculous when converting. the greatest moment ever? pffft... for england. nobody else in the world.
if your gonna be racist, get your fact right you dumb celt. firstly, when has shit rooney ever done anything for the national team? and secondly, how can england be a one man team with wilkinson if he's overrated? YOU IDIOT. YOUR OWN POST DOESN'T MAKE SENSE. and also, who scored the england try in the 2003 RWC final? oh yeah, NOT WILKINSON. your just pissed that ireland hasnt even come 4th in a RWC; scotlands best pos is 4th, wales' best is 3rd
If you look at the history of rugby, now don't get me wrong I love it! it's a bit f***** up!A bunch of football-soccer players, were playing in Rugby "which is a place by the way" a dum scottishmen picked the football up and started running with it!And some how rugby become the No1 game in New Zeland and Wales.
Typical English they got lucky and won the football world cup once 40 years ago and there still banging on about it, now there doing the same with rugby. Get a grip.
@lewys120 we werent lucky then seen as we were the best football team in the world from the mid-1950s to 1966, and we werent lucky in 2003 seen as we were the best team in the world for a year, look at some of the scores England got against other teams in the 2003 RWC....then tell me we were lucky.
@lewys120 People like to remember this time, English Rugby was at an all time high. Winning the world cup was huge, and the drama of this kick made it even better. It was one of my highlights growing up, as Rugby is my sport, so no, I won't 'get a grip' I shall continue to enjoy the memories, cheers.
@lewys120@lewys120 err this was two tournaments ago, and then in the most recent RWC, we were runners up-we beat australia and home team france to get to the final. and, in 2003, we grandslammed the 6 nations AND the rwc
In a championship where Wales and New Zealand played each other in a match that for me was the perfect exibition of attacking rugby, this sorry, negative, dull England side kicked their way to the trophy.
Don't get me wrong, their forwards were immense thoughout, and Wilkinson was at his best. However they only had one good attacing back, and that was Robinson!
@Kreedz0 We deserved to win this cup. yeah we might be pretty shit now but 2003 was our year. You sound bitter. Besides Australia only got 1 try and got 4 penalties, the same as England.
look i am not english myself but u shudnt grief the english they worked hard and won the 2003 world cup fair and square. And what do u mean they havent done anything since! they got to the final of 2007 and put up a good fight!. AND REMEMBER WITHOUT THEM RUGBY WUDNT EXIST!
@ZorbaTehGreek im not denying u done well in tha world cup i thought ud b out in the group stages however wa have englad really done since 2003 other than that ?

maybe the best in english rugby history
TheInternetCommentor 1 year ago
greatest moment in english rugby perhaps. It's a bit arrogant to claim this english victory as the best moment in an entire sports history.

i may be an enlgand supporter but by itself this is clearly one of the best moments in rugby. Te climax to one of the best playedgames of rugby and it just happened to be it was a final as well, u southern hemisphere lads can stop hating.... and yes gareth edward's try was bloody amazing

this is the greatest rugby moment for English rugby, not world rugby
TheOmacman 1 year ago
This is the best moment in my opinion...@twatcole there have been many great moments in rugby my friend but none with as much significance as this one...other than possibly Joel Stransky's drop goal in the 1995 World Cup final.
thegurunetwork 1 year ago
Not to mention Australia's best second rower since John Eales (Vickerman) is coming back into the side, we have a number 7 that is not only rivalling but out-playing the fading Capt McCaw, a backline with arguably the best attacking ability in world rugby at the moment, a lineout that challenges everyone. Our front row can match it with anyone- as long as it is our no.1 front row- Robinson, Moore (or PN), Alexander. All our other props and hookers have a long, long way to go. Lend us a couple???
chucka1984 1 year ago 3
@chucka1984 ye i agree, we got young players now and soon the wallabies will have a team than will whip everyone's ass. the 1st choice front row matching any size and strength, the great lock dan vickerman partnering with james horwill(or Sharpe) back in, a competitive back row with Bid bad Elsom, young guns McCalman and Higginbotham, and the one and only BAM BAM (DAVe P). plus a young firing back-line with great attacking ablity will bring some greater moments
TheOmacman 1 year ago
Additional: Since that World Cup the whole Southern Hemispere has wised up to your tactics England, as has the IRB and most of the refs, i.e. keep it in the forwards until a maul is collapsed and knock over a penalty.
Trouble is- you lost Neil Back and Johnson straight away. That is the reason you haven't beaten the AB's since, and have been lucky in all wins against the wallabies and the boks 2004-present. It's time for ol' England to chance their hand at running rugby- or continue to lose
chucka1984 1 year ago
Yeh... that fucken drop kick...

Btw I have just placed a bet on you lot to win next year...find a front row quick
crazzzyyyfoooolll 1 year ago
@crazzzyyyfoooolll Rubbish. Crazy Fool. You speak as if the '03 English side were the greatest team to ever take the field... Greatness has to take longevity into consideration.
2004 English Rugby tour of Australasia-
1st Test- NEW ZEALAND 36 ENGLAND 3
2nd test- NEW ZEALAND 36 ENGLAND 12 (oooh... improving from last week...)
3rd Test- AUSTRALIA 51 ENGLAND 15
Wise man for backing Aus for next year. I have too. With Moore and Polota Nau back in the side the front row is peachy.
chucka1984 1 year ago
@chucka1984 England 35- Australia 18. Please show some respect for england. We are a growing team!

@Raichu234 south Africa 21- 11 7 games in a row lost 269 point sscored against england in those games and England scored 68 or so

ahhh yes... the one man team that is england. where would england be in the sporting world if it werent for her few individuals she seems to rely on. another example is their one man football team that is Rooney. wilkinson is over-rated and looks fucking ridiculous when converting. the greatest moment ever? pffft... for england. nobody else in the world.
notenglishandproud 1 year ago
@notenglishandproud
if your gonna be racist, get your fact right you dumb celt. firstly, when has shit rooney ever done anything for the national team? and secondly, how can england be a one man team with wilkinson if he's overrated?

If you look at the history of rugby, now don't get me wrong I love it! it's a bit f***** up!A bunch of football-soccer players, were playing in Rugby "which is a place by the way" a dum scottishmen picked the football up and started running with it!And some how rugby become the No1 game in New Zeland and Wales.
welshwizzardmark 1 year ago
Typical English they got lucky and won the football world cup once 40 years ago and there still banging on about it, now there doing the same with rugby. Get a grip.
lewys120 1 year ago
@lewys120 we werent lucky then seen as we were the best football team in the world from the mid-1950s to 1966, and we werent lucky in 2003 seen as we were the best team in the world for a year, look at some of the scores England got against other teams in the 2003 RWC....then tell me we were lucky.
englandforever 1 year ago
@lewys120 People like to remember this time, English Rugby was at an all time high. Winning the world cup was huge, and the drama of this kick made it even better. It was one of my highlights growing up, as Rugby is my sport, so no, I won't 'get a grip' I shall continue to enjoy the memories, cheers.
mutzigmorzine 1 year ago
@lewys120 @lewys120 err this was two tournaments ago, and then in the most recent RWC, we were runners up-we beat australia and home team france to get to the final. and, in 2003, we grandslammed the 6 nations AND the rwc

This was a dark day for world rugby!
A dark day for the sport.

I prefer Scott Gibbs Running though 4 / 5 players at twickenham and jeko kickin it for us 2 win 32-31 or closer
2005 where Gavin Henson Kicked it over for wales to win 11-9
or 2007 where we beat the english 27 - 18
or 2009 where we beat the english 23 - 15
they were moments i wont forget :)
however my personal favorite wasnt a score it was a tackle agen by gavin henson on chris tate where he literally picked him up like a doll :)
