It played the role of 'the flag', 'the nation state', etc. It enabled the contraction of the 'us' by creating a 'them', and hence, the elite on either side would be able to maximally exploit the 'patriots' without it being compromised by the class consciousness that emerges when people link arms despite nationality, race, etc.

I have an idea. How about the Lakota developing their own internal currency? All over the res are dilapidated trailers but there's plenty of sand and binding material to make bricks. Declare one Lakota to equal 10 baked bricks and get everybody on board building houses. Spend the money into existence instead of borrowing it into existence.

i am so greatful to Russel means for makeing these videos. i have found that my great great grand mother was full blood West idian Souix from South Dakota. The history is rich and has me completely captivated...i wish i could visit. i feel like i just found a very important part of my being, and i want to know everything about it.

This video has very important things, being said, what I don´t understand why do the filmakers put on music and wind and other sounds making it hard to concentrate in the spoken words. This has become a usual procedure in so many videos, and it only undermines the concrete spoken messages as if unconsciouly saying: don´t listen to the words, they are not important!

How much can I understand your frustration, about what happend and the continuesly impact up to the present time of all indian nations. Personally, I as white, I am ashamed. But unfortunately I can't change the system. It ought to be a due for every indian child to learn their mothertongue at the school. Those language never should die. That English is a most common language, we have to accept. Defenately their has to be a language for to communicate worldwide.

@allcingeye before 1850 (or there abouts) the term american was used (by european immigrants) only in reference to natives... after that date 'we' used it to refer to ourselves. if you have access to primary sources of history it's very clearly written about.

Loewen reads - "Even terminology changed: until 1815 the 'Americans' had generally been used to refer to Native Americans; after 1815 it meant European Americans." 1815 is essentially when the First peoples were no longer considered a threat or useful as (what sociologists call) a conflict partner against other nations. in other words we were done using them to fight our wars (amoungst themselves and against our own enemies).

@allcingeye language as a matter of convenience helps others know what or who you're talking about ,no? i understand what you're writing about though - using the names we came up with is not often done with respect towards those they point to.
- and to know what they call themselves would require getting to know something about them. most european explorers generally asked one tribe who their neighbors were - so many of those names did not originate from the people themselves.
