i think a really good challenge would be to build a quadcopter for under $100, but without counting the trasmitter and receiver in the price. you guys make great videos, by far the best rc channel on youtube. great work!
I don't think that poor tower pro outrunner is rated for 4s, LOL. Seems to have worked out alright though. I have a GWS Corsair running that exact power system, except a 3 cell battery, and even with the draggy airframe, she flies a lot faster than scale. Gotta love HK!
They do a similar contest on RCGroups but they only figure in the cost of the speed control, motor, and battery for the 100 dollars. I think the record is over 150 MPH, which takes a lot more power than 100MPH, because of drag!
if i was betting anything on a 100 mph challenge, i wouldn't even bother with using a 3s and just dropped in a 4s lipo liked they used on the second wing.
I thoroughly enjoyed this episode, please do more like it. I liked the idea another commenter posted about more competitions. Great job guys, I get excited when I see that yall have posted another video!
@kwahyttam : Well in the "Fiberglass Fox" review that Flitetest posted on March 31, Josh specifically said, and I quote: "for this one, since we're gonna be flying fast, I want metal gears [servos] all around..."
Now they're doing another fast plane, and that recommendation all seems to be forgotten?
@crystal130h Hello friend. I can see where the advise I gave on the fox review seemed to be ignored. The Fox was a fast plane with large control serfaces with ample throw. The "challenge plane had very small controll serfaces with very little throws. This makes it ok to use the 9 grams.
@joshuamelvin : OK thanks for clarifying that Josh. The reason I brought it up was because, on your advice, I ordered some of those same DS929MG servos from HobbyKing that you spoke of in that video...to be installed in my first plane that I hope to break the 100mph mark with. It's a little 50mm EDF-powered F-16 made by J-Power (which I also bought from HobbyKing), and I'm souping it up with a Wemo fan and 6000 Kv outrunner.
@crystal130h Yeah, I see what you mean. They kinda went back on their previous statement. But they were going for as cheap as possible, so I guess that's where they cut back.
Technically you need to fly the plane in both directions to eliminate how fast the wind can be pushing you. This is an old trick to get an approximate potential air speed. Take your RPM in thousands and the prop pitch in inches and multiply together. Example , 6600 RPM and 8x6 prop (6) - 6.6 times 6 yields approximately 40 MPH. Naturally aerodynamics is also really important.
Great stuff guys. I pullin for you Josh(looser of bet). You have nothing to worry about .By the looks of it he can`t color match and it looks like he wears too tight of clothes heheheh.
@RcTinCan its a joke im calling them out for saying its a $40 trans their using but at 9:19 doesn't look like a hobby king transmitter so if its only $40 ill buy it.
why don't you guys try the mikey's rc pylon racer?

That's pretty cool, but how long can the 2nd plane stay in the air? It looked like the first one ran out of juice under 4 minutes.

OK I am truly wondering why they did not use the HK radio...Won't it handle the 100 mph or is it not stable enough?
oimmuk 8 months ago
@oimmuk - Ease of programming for expos. We needed precision control to fly it directly over the radar gun.

Hi. love The show. been into RC Cars for 10+ years, and just started to fly planes, love to build them and the mechanics of the planes.
I made a 1 to 1 scale of the FT Speedwing, so people can make it more easier, the rar file is a Illustrator and a pdf. hope it helps people.

HXT900s are good servos, and I use them sometimes -- but is it a good idea to use plastic-gear servos in a plane this fast?
crystal130h 10 months ago
@crystal130h Oh sure, Guy on RCGroups ran a Funjet Ultra to 182mph on HXT900's.
Search for "Funjet / Ultra on Steroids (Current top speed : 182 mph)", Psionic001's plane
