  • lol 1:30 the roots blower sounds like a trackter engine

  • Must have been a nice job looking after that engine house !! Where were they originally located ?

  • North of Wisbech in Lincolnshire. The last of the three engines has just been removed.

  • That be some BIG engine!

  • I worked at Crossley premier as an apprentice.

We started off working on HH14s and eventually to RM08s They were huge engines and I well remember working in the cylinders with a candle for lighting

  • I can remember reading about an engine like this which is at an engineering school in the USA, and it's electric start, and it doesn't have a blower.

  • Here's one for you; how's that engine cooled? i see no sign of cooling fins on the cylinders, or any kind of radiator to cool it. Does it run so slow it doesn't need cooling or something?

  • Water cooled with a circ pump driven from the crank.

  • Full diesel

  • One more question, is this engine a semi-diesel as well, or is it a full-blown diesel engine?

  • Ah, how large is this engine, and how many cylinders? It looks to be at least 2-3 meters long...

  • Total weight about 28 tons, 4 cylinders in pairs horizontally opposed.

If you have a look at the internalfire dot com website and look in the Internal Fire Photos/IF Images/Tydd Gote album there are a whole load of pictures of the engine being dismantled.

  • What is the normal RPM, and what did he do to the blower that made it suddenly quiet?

  • Normal rpm 245.

Blower has a 4" door on the side which was open during starting.

  • Does this allow for extra air intake? Or is it a bypass until the engine is up to speed?

  • 245RPM! Thats 6431 lb-ft of torque! That is insane!

  • When starting there is a bit of string that goes over the top of the engine to a tin of Easy Start (ether) pointing into the hole. A quick pull on the string before starting the engine.

  • Is this the engine located in sheffield? pumping station

  • No, you are thinking of the Brush at Riverlea I think.

These are North East of Peterborough.
