Congratulations on your boy Henry and the nice modern layout ! Also would you happen to know the Athearn parts number for the SD70ace etched metal dynamic brake fan ? I been looking for the parts manual but cant find it anywhere.

Love how the motor sound revs up (like the prototype) before it actually starting to move. Unlike the MTH that the loco will creep along before it even revs up.

One of my Union Pacific SD70ace I had to send back 3 times to get fixed. When I got it back they also enclosed the speaker box for free. It sounds much better then the regular ones.

How do the ditch light work if the dont flash whenthe horn is played?

i still don't trust it. im going to wait a few months before i even concider buying one. if you set any of athearns SD models on a piece of glass, you can see that the trucks are warped. it works fine if you have a flat layout, but if you add a slight grade with some turns, you'll be having a 180 dollar locomotive falling off the track onto the level below, or the floor.

@GordonFreemanD40 Athearns RTR line locos have great detail not Genesis level but better than most out there including Atlas and Kato You gotta remember that RTR locos do NOT come sound equipped and the newer ones are only DCC ready which means you have to buy and install (very easy) your decoder and program it if you want DCC of course. RTR is starting to get expensive MSRP on them is as high as $149 but you can find them for as low as $83 if you want sound save up for a Genesis

it does seem much better i bought an athearn one pulled it out of the box and then put it right back in...I was very disappointed it was just awful not worth the 200 I paid for it...but now im in O scale and things are good

@NScaleRRFan what brand are they? If they are atlas...some of them can be done with a drop in decoder. Kato is the same way...If it's an older bachmann...forget it...probably not worth trying...unless it's a real smooth runner...

@NScaleRRFan I'd consider getting yourself loco's that would more easily accept decoders...Kato and Atlas are best bets...bachmann locos, in N aren't particularly fond of having decoders installed...room is usually a big concern and no easy way to hook them up...trust me I have Atlas and Bachmann...and I won't even consider a decoder for the bachmanns...

I still think the MTH Sounds are better! especially the whistle. I know that MTH uses two speakers while Soundtrax uses only one. that has plenty to do with the sound quality.

I have three of the previous models of these particular engines (UP 8419, UP 1982, and BNSF 9210) as well as many other Athearn Genesis locomotives, and I luckily haven't had any problems. Maybe I'm just lucky.
