@Tarn1968 Tennants far off my favorite aswell, his doctor was too human, and just waving his sonic screwdriver around alot. Mostly though that was RTD's writing I think. Mccoy is my favorite, Tom Baker 2nd and Troughton 3rd, Tennant is a lowly 9th. Sounds like your debater was a new who fan all around.
@Tarn1968 I disagree, I think the people that play the Doctor are all wonderful in their own way, they all bring something unique and differrent to the roles. 1960's Dictor Who was always going to be extremely different to 2005 onwards and so it has to be, but none is better than the other. I remember Jon Pertwee regenerating into Tom Baker (vaguely!) and everyone loved him too....
They were sent from their own time lines basically the 2nd doctor was dragged from his time line and put into the 6th doctors time line, after the 6th had been forced to regenerate but before he was forced in his time...
All these people saying David Tennant was "one of the best".... unbelievable. The new series was a travesty and Tennant's antics helped to make it worse than it already was. Even Sylvester Mccoy is preferable to him.
@grahamlaur i liked colin baker over tennant but mcoy was a great milestone in dr who u never knew what his real motives were and colin was the doctors midlife crisis
@cybertaylor Colin Baker was a fantastic Doctor - a fine, dynamic actor who gave his absolute 100% to every episode he appeared in through his tragically brief run. Mccoy is not a terrible actor, but I dislike what was done with the character - the Doctor is NOT a manipulator, he shows up unannounced and uninvited, fixes things, grins and winks, and moves along.
@grahamlaur One of the great things about Doctor Who is that he is one person with different aspects of his nature coming out in each persona. Why shouldn't the Doctor feel at times he wants to manipulate his destiny and that of others, instead of just letting things happen by mere chance? I loved the 7th Doctor.
No wonder British industry declined so much in the 1960s. Who cares about steel, cars and cutlery when you have this and the arts blossoming!! ..yeah, I know, wistful rubbish, but if you need a reason to see how the English maintained their heartbeat under that mask which different people call cool, snobbish, boorish or whatever, it is in the arts and the popular arts in particular - and most of it derived from the States in the late 50s early 60s and yet reproduced to such stunning effect
@Tarn1968 That is rediculous. The old series was absolutely brilliant! i like it just as much as i like the new series. although, I must disagree with you. i think Tennants doctor was the best out of all of them, but Patrick Troughton was great aswell
@organs 100% agree with you on your favorites as they are mine as well. I think #3 would be Pertwee but I have never seen the grandfather one (Doctor #1) and very limited exposure to Doctor #2. I only know the doctors from #3 up through David (I still can bring myself to watch a 27 year old Doctor played my Matt Smith).
Always wondered how Doctor 2 regenerated into Doctor 3 (never saw the reruns). Kind of scary how it happened. Kanpo was more merciful on his next regeneration. After seeing this and The Three Doctors, Omega was "what goes arounds comes around". Doctor 2 and 3 were vindicated, by defeating Omgea.
That was a bit harsh, could someone explained to me why was the second Doctor force to changed his appearance durying the game war episode, I wasnt around in 1969.
@TheScotty9646 *The war games. Basically, no time lord was meant to take part in the war games because of their knowledge they had a massive chance of victory. The results of which could completely change time. The Doctor knew this but still took part (well he had to sort of) and hence the timelords banished him.
@24badger10 there is a theory that there was a sort of series 6 and a half where the doctor worked for the time lords for a while. This would explain the three doctors, the two doctors and also why the time lords seam to have got used to using the doctor for there own biding, example the opening scene in genesis of the daleks.
ok i know i'm beng fussy and i know that the budget and technology wasn't great back then but c'mon these are the TIMELORDS for god's sake!!! They are supposed to have technology that we can only dream!!!!! They show him large hand drawn pictures that look cartoony and stupid, couldn't they have just got five blokes flash a torch on their face when the dr looks at them?

The 2nd Doctor Patrick Troughton didn't regenerate They just changed his image as punishment..... Maybe this will add a life for the new Doctor after the 12th regeneration.....
The most callous thing that the timelords did in the classic series, way worse than when they made a deal with the valeyard to make him inherit the doctors regenerations.
When will 'The War Games' come on DVD in USA,Oh back in past years sac pbs played most of shows so got most on vhs but love have copy of 'The War Games' oh as pbs do for money did for doctor who for$ get this for $ get this and sci fi in way so have lot things of d/w to say so best say love d/w lot!
theres a theroy called Season 6B that the second doctor went on time lord missions between now and the next episode cos his regenoration wasnt shown and the multy dr storys like two doctors and 5 doctors
sailor: I concur. Doctor 'Two' said he worked for the Timelords in order to keep his freedom. Of course, it's also possible that each of the Doctors continued off on his own course and had additional adventures even after regenerating into someone else, creating multiple alternate timelines. This was a better explanation of how the Doctor's previous selves were visibly older in The Five and The Two Doctors, and why the later Doctors had no memory of having met their future selves. More to come.

My theory: Each time the Doctor regenerated, an alternate timeline was created in which he *didn't* regenerate. Thus, Hartnell's Doctor continued on until he was needed in the 3 and 5 Doctors, Troughton's was allowed to continue his travels (doing occasional work for the Timelords along the way with Jamie AND having better control over the TARDIS), Pertwee's Doctor still worked for UNIT, and so on. They were all still the Doctor, but alternative versions who aged.

@Tarn1968 It's all a matter of opinion, anyway. David himself favored number five: who I think was Peter Davison.
Personally, my two favorites are Tom Baker and David Tennant. I don't know which I prefer.

Except Moffat tied up that plothole about aging in "Time Crash"...if a Doctor crosses paths within his own lifetime, they will age.
HeyArnoldsspleen 2 years ago
@dumbbo1 no they regenerated, the writers never had this in mind, the actor decided to quit his job. this is how it happens
