this is so true. i've read book and mag about eating healthy and how you should cut this and that out of your meal. but i can never stick with it because of the dull taste. following your advice, i still get to eat what i like at a smaller portion and still loss weight. i hit the gym 6 times a day and do my resistance and cardio training for 1 to 2 hours each day. my body fat percentage has gone from 25% to now 14% in little over 7 week. thanks steve

@BodyPerformanceTV I eat 1500 calories per day and burn 400 per day at the gym. I avoid processed & fatty foods. My lunch is a salad of vegtables and I am not losing weight

@BodyPerformanceTV AHEM! I know exactly how many calories per day I am taking in. I write down everything I eat and the aeroibic machine tells you how many calories I am burning. Yesterday I took in 1557 calories and burned 409. And My weight is banging back and forth from 228 to 230 then back again. I don't lift weights much. I had a hernia as a child and when I do I gain pounds on the scale which is muscle but I do not lose any body fat because the scale says I am heavier.
i think alot of the criticism from people on hear is mainly because of this:
as Steve says calories in vs calories out is how you lose or gain weight regardless of the source of the calories, HOWEVER body composition is determined largely by the types of foods you eat so someone who eats 2000 cals from chocolate will never be as lean or healthy as someone who has a good balanced meal plan equalling 2000 calories although they may weigh the same body fat percentage will be very different.
A little simplistic but true. Realistically fewer calories in, more weight loss. We hear a lot about "starvation mode" etc....but if you've been eating 3800 calories, if you cut in half your body isn't going to be starving and really if you "plateau" it's going to be taking you from 380lbs to 200lbs.
trust me steve is right , he tells the truth about everything , u know how i know? Cause i know for a fact everything he said is right because for one it makes sense and for two, i've been there
So, you've been there and because of that, everything Steve says is correct? I've been there too and because of that, everything Steve says is incorrect?
You trust me, Steve is incorrect. Not because I've been there, not because it doesn't make sense. But because once you start to read actual scientific papers, you realize the human body isn't merely a calorie counter. It's much more complex than this and nothing Steve says comes close to explaining it.
Thanks! Gary Taubes is an idiot. I watched one of his seminars and he draws way too many conclusions with out consistent, accurate scientific evidence. Plus he doesn't understand accurate exercise or calorie usage.
All your videos are based on a single hypothesis: The Positive Caloric Balance hypothesis. It's flawed. It's based on the First Law of Thermodynamics. The problem with this is that the body works according to the Second Law of Thermodynamics. So any advice based on the PCB hypothesis is bound to fail. If not now, then some time down the line. And for those who are reading, if you agree with his videos, you probably believe what he's saying already so it serves no purpose to tell you otherwise.
It's not my theory. Is the "caloric deficit" theory yours?
There is not enough space and the details are too lengthy to explain it here. Start with the book Good Calories Bad Calories by Gary Taubes. Look for an article by the same author in the New York Magazine online.
In short, the caloric deficit theory works but not because of the caloric deficit. Instead, it does other things that in themselves work without a caloric deficit.
Gary Taubes is an idiot. I watched one of his seminars and he draws way too many conclusions with out consistent, accurate scientific evidence. Plus he doesn't understand accurate exercise or calorie usage.
If you've watched one of his seminars, then certainly it allows you to pass a quick judgment. Did you read his book Good Calories Bad Calories? It's highly technical. It contains over 100 pages of bibliography (references to research he did to write the book). It took him about 6 years to research and write it.
You call him an idiot. You mean he wasted all this time throwing pencils at the ceiling? Look, it's alright. Keep on doing your stuff and you'll go places.
I pass quick judgment when he makes a statement that either isn't scientifically correct OR makes a statement that is common knowledge (to those in the industry) but then acts as if he's discovered something. He's a scientific writer not a scientist. It's like being a airplane mechanic and being an airplane designer. Plus, he then went on a speaking tour after he got his $700,000 book deal.
He is a science writer. He did go on a speaking tour (after he finished the book). He did get a $700,000 book deal. If that makes him an idiot, then he's an articulate, famous and rich idiot.
Speaking of scientists, you're not one either yet you make all kinds of "scientifically proven" claims in your videos. I mean, you say it's all proven with studies and stuff but you don't actually show us the studies and stuff so all we got is your word for it. Do you think your word is enough?
The difference is I'm presenting information that's already been proven scientifically. I'm not creating new information that's not proven. Example - I didn't invent math I'm just presenting it in an easier to understand fashion. I would also welcome Gary to take his shirt off in front of a crowed auditorium.
No, actually you're just a guy on YouTube telling people to do stuff "because you said so". You're just repeating the same mantra we've been hearing for 30 years. The very first man to speak your words is Jean Mayer and he invented all of it. He's the father of the Positive Caloric Balance hypothesis. Ever since then we've been trying to prove his words but we've failed every single time.
What do you tell people who stall even if they cut portions? Eat nothing? How long can that last?
I have to disagree with you JackFook. It's up to you to get the facts not him. It's up to you to present them and dispute. You won't gain much by saying he's wrong when your only reference is a book called "Bad Carbs...". Since you're doubting his knowledge of the subject you're obligated to prove him wrong. This "mantra" is older than 3 decades. Infact as old as logic itself. There was no invention to speak of. It's common sense.
Put up or shut up? I could tell you the same thing about your claim that this "mantra" is older than logic itself. Would you care to get the facts about that?
Did you read the book? Did you look up Jean Mayer? Did you look at alternative hypotheses? It doesn't matter if I mention the facts. What matters is that you consider them. Based on your characterization of the book, i.e. "Bad Carbs...", it's obvious that you did not actually consider the alternatives. But there is hope still.
Why not just make a video of your own and tell the us what is the best thing to do. If you know he is wrong show us what is right. For the people struggling with waist line a clean, concise answer is most helpful. As I've said other times and places, the starvation mode idea only comes into play if you actually starve yourself. You aren't likely to trigger it by cutting back from massive calorie intake to reasonable and healthy caloric intake.
This is exactly what I do to get cut up again. I cut about half of my food consumption, and eat salads frequently. I do feel hungry sometimes, but when I do I drink smoothies, and not fake ones, nutritious ones. After 3 weeks that last 5-10 lbs. is gone, just by controlling quantity.
ok.. since this is about foods.. (can you feel a silly questions coming on?..) is coffee bad for diets?.. I a european.. Great strong coffee is a must in the mornings.. and Tea? constantly...
no offense meant, but it sounds like an invitation to be hungry all the time. People eating low volume high-fat food are going to feel empty quickly and be unhappy.
The point of the video is it's not what you eat that causes weight loss but how much you eat. With American's eating habits I doubt people will be hungry all the time by simply cutting out 1/3 -1/2 of their portions. Unhappiness comes from having to eat foods you don't like forever in order to maintain your weight.
steve im on a strict diet and i would like to leave it and follow what you are suggesting, eat what i like just half or significantly less of it...can i do it right away or can it be bad for my weightloss?
If people are interested in bettering their body then I am sure all of their meals will no consist of all "low volume high-fat food." If you do as Steve suggested and eat with a much slower pace, you will realize that all the food you normally eat is way too much. Quite the contrary. High fat foods are more satiating, and stay in your stomach longer. You're not going to be unhappy if you learn the difference between being satisfied, and being "full." Check out "thintuition" here on youtube and see if what I say makes since after you see that.
I removed only 30% of my portions and its already working :)
