im so sad now cuz they turned the night show into some Broadway crap, there is nothing Polynesian about it, I mean they took away the guy throwing the fir knife down from the waterfall to the guy on the stage!
I love the samoan dance though, that would have to be the funniest part of the show lolz
i went last week and i saw them throw the knife down. i dont know what you aretalking about. the opening is new and i liked it. broadway? obviously you didnt watch the entire show, i saw polynesian dancing through out the night.
I went with a school group in 2001 when I was 10 years old, so needless to say I didn't get to enjoy nearly as much as I wanted to. I wish I could go back, but now I'm broke because of college! Oh the memories. I browse the PCC website several times a week. I really want to go back. I feel like there's this empty space because there was so much I wanted to see and do, not to mention my dad threw out my old camcorder tapes. It's terribly saddening :(
this was the best event i been to during my holidays
becoz it felt i was back home seeing my peoples from my homeland New Zealand,Tonga,Fiji,Cook Island and my culture that im so proud tah be Samoa. But the only culture that wasnt in thea was Niue. Just loved the night show that was my favourite so yeah fanx for uploading this it brings back good memories=)
Considering that the PCC is the top money earner in Hawaii it might be worthwhile them giving money to the cultures that they have plundered so unashamedly.
Hello, someone obviously didn't listen. The money made from this place DOES go to the students from these very same cultures so that in essence, all they have to do is dance/perform and then they can get a top-quality education, and they do receive a salary too. No one is getting rich off the PCC...it's a non-profit organization.
Please....do the students at BYU Provo have to dance for their supper? No....they get the top rate education because of the tithes members of the Mormon Church pay. They are manipulating culture and underpriviledged students for their own means. And on top of that the performances are bastardisations of the cultures to tone it down to suit Mormonism. The Maori set is disgraceful...it pays no respect to iwi or hapu traditions. Non profit...as if. Who told you that?
Someone obviously reads too much hostile literature written by OTHERS instead of going to the source. Try the PCC website buddy:) They do clearly state that they are a non-profit organization and where/what the proceeds are used for. As far as Provo goes, I don't know anyone who has a free ride except if earned through sports or academics. The regular students still pay tuition which is comparable to any state university.
As far as "toning" down the performances, HELLO, of course they have to. Before the white man screwed up Polynesia, think hard as to what many of the cultures WORE or should say...didn't wear. Modifications are necessary in the modern world~) Atleast the PCC doesn't reinforce that ridiculous COCONUT SHELL bra crap...total invention by westerners. As for showing respect to iwi or hapu traditions, the PCC is an overview...not an in depth study. Still, they do the best that they can.
How messed up, Westerners did that? What the crap? I knew my culture screwed POlynesia up, I never new they did it that bad. Thanks for the enlightenment. I have always been against my culture invading in someone else's culture.
Unless you are from the Pacific Islands you have no business making the above comments. Modifications are necessary in a modern world...piss off. It is our culture...not something that can be repackaged for sensitive white people...it is ours to determine what shape it takes...not something to make white people money...even if it does assist students...the large portion of the money goes the Mormon Church.
The "modifications" done at the PCC are 100% done by native Pacific Islanders. There is no white boss lording changes over anyone. And again, sorry No1Saint, you still have it wrong. Their "NON-PROFIT" status is beyond dispute...if you don't belive their website, feel free to contact the Better Business Bureau or the Hawaii Tourism Board. They can and WILL clarify anything you want. The money goes to PACIFIC ISLANDER STUDENTS, the PCC, and the upkeep of the campus, NOT the Mormon Church.
Well, it certainly does look like you're whining about nothing at all...it does look like most Polynesian cultures have made their own modifications...haven't seen too many nude dancers at Merrie Monarch have you? They put on all those clothes for white masters you say? Give yourself a break and take a deep breath, you're gonna have a heart attack. And for your information, my grandmother IS 100% Tahitian and I was born in Hawaii. Does my opinion count now?
If you were to speak to anyone who knows anything you would realise that the PCC have always packaged all the islands in a 1950's tiki lounge style...it's what they do. It does not reflect traditional or contemporary pacific performaces.
No white overlord...who do you think oversees the entire performance set...that would be the President of the PCC who is appointed by the Mormon Church. And the people who are tuturing the performers, are all Mormons who consider the Mormon Church to be superior to their own culture and will always tow the line on style, content and performance.
Not everyone at the PCC is a Mormon. And the President of the PCC certainly does not oversee the entire performance set. Yes, usually it is a haole to handle the business side, but not the cultural. Go and ask anyone there, you'll see only REAL Islanders tutoring the performers and creating the shows. In all the years that I was there, I never saw any haole teaching the performers how to dance or sing. That job is for the individual Island chiefs, who do come from their respective islands.
Everyone knows the fete of today isn't the same as centuries ago, but I still love it nonetheless. What was lost will never 100% be regained. But of course that doesn't mean we shouldn't try our best to preserve our cultures as best as possible. However, pulling down something that actually promotes culture isn't helping either. My time at the PCC inspired me to learn more. No, the PCC will never be as good as the real thing, but it is certainly better than nothing.
I personally know many employess of PCC; dancers, Maori village chief, costumers, musicians and show directors. These are wonderful, talented people who are trying to educate people and promote your culture. Also, PCC is the only way in which many Pacific Islanders are able to obtain an education. I don't understand where your hatred of PCC arose, but why not help educate people instead of tearing everything down?

Unless you can provide a credible website with non profit status, then I stand by my for profit comment.

Return to the land of your ancestors and see how vibrant and wonderful traditional performance art is, and how cheap and pathetic the PCC version is.
