  • can i use a netgear router to extend my wifi. (i have a qwest :Q1000: router)

  • Thanks for the Video ... Can I use my repeater to repeat some other network that I have no control on?

  • @TechFreak51 If you can access the signal and the network, you can boost the signal. You will run into issues with setting it up though if you can't control the network or identify it's IP and Mac Addresses.

  • @howto4u

    Thank you very much !

  • Great video very professional and helpfull, however for me after saving the settings and going to the wireless repeater and try to add the mac number, it gives me an error saying i cant use that feature because my channel settings need to be changed..."?" so im lost n feeling very frustrated.

  • @KOYORKIE Thanks for the feedback. There may be some other things you need to do depending on the type of router and repeater. Try googling your exact setup to see if others have put out steps for changing the channel settings.

  • Can you use the second router as a repeater if its on two different floors?

  • @dadaymc If your signal reaches it, then sure.

  • how much does that cost? and is it the same as the "universal wifi range extender wn3000rp" ?

  • @unknownguy235 I'm not sure what the cost right now. This video is a few years old.

  • Yes, great video. I have an old Sky wireless router in the shed that I could use as a repeater. My base router would be a Netgear Rangemax. If I try the Sky one and it doesn't work because it's from a different manufacturer, can I reverse the process back without causing any problems with the existing router?

  • @mytubenowhahaha Yes, as long as you remember any settings you change so you can change them back if you need to.

  • I bought an identical netgear router, followed the video directions and got nothing. I noticed in the video that the guy said at the end that he could unplug the ethernet cable because his pc was wireless. Was this a minor irrelevant detail or a necessary condition for making a second router work as a repeater?

  • Happy wife is a happy life! Best video on information on you tube I have ever seen. Very professional with great pictured video! Thanks...Barry in Pa.

  • No mention of it halving the effective throughput, which is a know network fact. Nice house shame about the expertise.

  • And you still use IE :(

  • Great I think it will help me a lot :) Thanks!

  • @HouseCrafts thanks man

  • Is there a difference between a Repeater and an Extender? And, if so, what are they? and which one is better?

  • please reply to my massage asap!!

  • u guys are awesome

  • You can use 1 as an ip address if its available. Its usually taken up by the 1st router. You will need to ping address but routers today usually show who's on the network, just select an ip address that's not in use otherwise you will cause a ip conflict and that's a no no .

  • @joeymantera Great tip. Thanks!

  • I just got the Netgear Wireless N600 router. I now hanve an old Netgear G router siting around. Will this still work even though they are different routers.

  • @xJustAboutEverything To the best of my knowledge, in some cases different routers will work if they are from the same manufacturer, but I don't know for sure about those two models. You might want to check a Netgear forum or their support site to see.

  • @Taharayan1 ive seen this done with different router brands, they just need to have the "repeater" function/technology.

  • Buy a 3G signal repeater from PHONESIGNAL.co.uk

  • Best video I have seen to date for this process!

  • @TankerPuke Thanks. Glad it helped.

  • He didn't even plug the router that he used as a repeater he just put it up there and she had signal all along they just rehearsed this

  • I found that this makes the setup EASY: ad-agency.hubpages.com/hub/Netgear-WN2000RPT-Setup

  • Does the router have to be the same model exactly or can it be different

  • @taharayan1 It can be different.

  • Very informative. Thank you for clearly explaining to us viewers how to set-up a repeater router. I'll follow this video as I still have 1 more extra wireless router kicking around my house.

  • I tried to setup my base repeater, but a I ended up getting a network error. I am guessing, but would it be because i have a private IP 10.0.0.1 (this was given to me when i used the disc to setup, or because I created a wep key? any ideas?

  • @sprnate You might try "googling" the exact error message to see if someone explains the issue and how to fix it.

  • can you repeat the signal from a repeater

  • @electroman6913 Do you mean that you want to know how to connect a second extender that repeats the signal from the first extender? If so, I've never tried this so I'm not sure how well it would work. I would think your signal would start to degrade.

  • Mbps = Mega bits per second derpy.

  • Thanks great video

  • him: lets go to Malus reception

me: (with my pants down) lets go!

  • @denisrenelara

    LMAO....

  • Best ever. :D

  • *So more specifcally, I have a Netgear WNR1000v2 and a D-Link DIR-655, would those work together at all? or no? And not only that, I went onto routerlogin with the netgear, and I can't seem to find the "wireless extender" function link on the side panel.

  • Does the repeater have to be the same model? Cause I have a Netgear and a D-Link.

  • ok I have a netgear wnr1000v2-VC I've been looking around and I can't find anywhere to show how to make this the base and I can't update the firmware or anything. pretty frustrating. I found a forum that says it's impossible to bridge but then on the same thread it said it is but doesn't say how....

  • @dnamick17 I'm a little confused. Are you having trouble setting up this device as the main router or as a range extender? Are you just looking for a first time setup of the router?

  • @howto4u Thanks man helped a lot!

  • Looks like an intro to a porn movie

  • I couldn't watch the video because I can't figure out how to use the range extender.

  • hi there. im using a Belkin N150 Enhanced Wireless Router and trying to connect it to a new Amped Wireless SR300 High Power Wireless-N Smart Repeater / Universal Wi-Fi Range Extender and its not working it keeps saying that my settings are messed up on my router. do you have any advice? the belkin wireless settings dont show a repeater slot

  • What rips me is that from time to time I can pass by a shack of a house and someone is shooting a signal 200'+ with one router from Wal-Mart!

  • Mbps - lower cased "b" represents bits not bytes. big difference.

Mega bits per second. 8 bits = 1 byte.

  • DOES THIS WORK WITH ATT UVERSE... I want to set myself free of that dumb old 2Wire router with G speeds. Please reply.

  • @BroknSircut I've never used ATT Uverse so I'm not sure.

  • Respond to this video... Technically speaking, you should be able to extend your wireless range. I just don't know the particular details of your setup.

  • what other website can be used for non netgear routers?

  • @comba4life It depends on the router manufacturer. Try searching google for instructions for your specific router.

  • @comba4life typing in your router's IP address typically takes you to your router settings.

You can find your router's IP by bringing up the command prompt. Run> CMD> Ipconfig/all

then type the ip into your browser's adressbar, and that should take you to the router login screen

  • How about repeating from a repeater? Base to repeater to repeater. Would you put the repeater's mac address into the next repeater?

  • @landen99 Technically, I think you can do this, but I've never done it myself. Also, I think it may not be possible on all repeaters. You'll probably need to do some research on the capabilities of your repeaters. Try googling the name of your repeater and something like "repeat a repeater".

  • you know whats funny about this video is that how do you know your not getting an internet connection because i see that your internet port on your first router has an amber light this means that the internet is not working thats why she can't connect to it in the first place. Yes i do know she wants to connect but cannot get a signal i do know that but how are you going to get internet with the amber light on good video though!!! and i all you need is a amplyfier for cheaper than a router

  • Can i do this with an N600 and a N 300 as a repeater ??

  • @700mobster I haven't tried that scenario myself. But you can try the steps and see if it works, or try googling that setup to see if others have posted instructions on it.

  • Can I do it with Clearwire's router?

  • @anikid0392 The steps may be slightly different, but the concept is the same. You may want to google the name of your router and repeater to see if you can find exact steps.

  • /watch?v=odTeqBOkUdA

    WiFi Signal Problem ??

    FIX IT

    works Awesome !!!

  • But thanks for the vid cuz my base is netgear too, easy to understand!

  • hey can you do this with a different type of router like different company, cuz i REALLY wanna do this

  • why doesnt routerlogin work for me it just takes me back to the webpage :S:S

  • @HayILocK try typing 192.168.1.1 in the address bar instead

  • @REMIX8604 /watch?v=odTeqBOkUdA

    WiFi Signal Problem ??

  • does this work in Australia?

  • On the second repeater, that you moved into another room at the end of the video, can Ethernet cables still be plugged in to that I have both wireless and wired connections?

I'm wanting to do this with a pair of ASUS RT-N12 which have selectable router/repeater/ap modes. One asus will be connected in router mode to a dsl modem. The second asus will be in repeater mode in my shop providing wireless and the ability to connect into an Ethernet port.

  • @TheRedpopripple yes you can do that ;)

  • @m4sta2k Actually, I went with a D-LINK DIR655 for my main router and use an ASUS RT-N12 in repeater mode. I'm getting around 150' from my computer shop to my home. Since the D-LINK has a private and guest channel I paired the ASUS RT-N12 (in my shop) with the GUEST BSSID. - Btw, anyone reading this if you get a RT-N12 make sure to update the firmware first. -

  • cant you just buy a better router ?? I dont kniw

  • would the process be any different with linksys routers?

  • Every time I try and do this I end up not being able to log back into my router.

  • can two very different routers do this? (i have d-link and Ultra Speed, routers)

  • Super HD camera you have there :3

  • oh fuck this, it wont help in gaming

  • Trying this with two Netgear WGR614v9 & v10. I just will NOT work. Pissing me off!

  • 5 people are having a hard time with wireless repeaters....

  • The highest option in that setup is NOT WEP, its WPA2-PSK

  • Can I do this with a PS3 or Xbox360 instead of a PC?

  • Very cheesy but SOO USEFUL!

  • looks easy on a netgear but dorky on a linksys product.... not sure how to do it on linksys

  • do i need a Powerline Ethernet adapter for the repeater to work

  • it doesn't seem that the wireless repeating function tab is still available. Why is this?

  • Very clear instruction. Great job!

  • CAN I DO THIS WITH DIFFERENT BRAND? PLS!

  • thank you very much!!

  • can i do that with different routers? ,,i have huawei as my router ,,and i want to give signal to the upper floor with tomson as a reciever!! can i do that,,and one more question if i can,,can i connect a lan cable to the pc from the repeater ? will it work?

  • @papcyrill I'm not familiar with the huawei or tomson. You may want to "google" the hardware you are using and what you are trying to do. For example, search google on something like "extend huawei router to thomson receiver".

  • @howto4u I hope you read this. If I have two Linksys routers but they aren't the same model can I make one of them a receiver and one a repeater.

  • This is a bunch of B.S the repeater only work with no security option or WEP (weak security option).

  • You could save yourself alot of time and money and go buy a netgear wnr3300

  • I need some help. I plan to use a Netgear N750 (wireless router) and Netgear N300 (to be repeater router). The Netgear N750 is a dual band router. When I configure the N750, do I need to change both the 5GHz band or the 2GHz band? I appreciate any input. Thanks.

  • What if a computer is connected to the LAN ports on the repeater router?

  • @marcobarring I haven't done it myself, but I think it should probably still work.

  • when you use a repeater does the speed of the internet go slower?

  • @Ggamer2471 It shouldn't, as long as your signal strength is maxed.

  • Hello, thank you for the video. Does the base have to be the same model as the repeater ? I have two different routers at home and was wondering if this could still be done. Thanks

  • great vid! very helpful

  • does the repeater have to be the same model as the base station cause i got a netgear n300 router and a microsoft mn-500 router and i dont wanna spend another $60 on it again.

  • lol, the laptop wasnt on at the end.... just saying. :P

  • hey guys, i need to clear something up. can you set up a repeater if the original router is wpa psk?

  • @niwoo28 That's a good question that I don't know the answer to right off the top of my head. You should try asking it to the hp support forums experts. Youtube doesn't let me post links into comments, but you can find the forums by googling "hp support forum".

  • omg thank you very much, i have the best signal now and i even have my repeater in a high spot, great tutorial.

    highly appreciated =D

  • if i choose wpa2 password, will i have to change anything on the reapeter or just have to type mac and ip adress?

because i want to have reapeter and secure wifi...tnx

  • Nicely paced info. Not too fast, no commercials!! Thank-you.

  • Hi, quick question ...

why can't I use my channel settings on Auto?

    Thanks

    BrownieTamelle

  • I am not gonna use my laptop at a far range but wud use my mobile nd ipad for whch i require a repeater. So my question is can I connect the repeater to a power socket?

If not, then whats the alternative for extending the range?

  • when i connect my ethernet cable from my computer to my repeater i get no internet connection.

  • I did not know that the stock firmware supported layer 2 wireless bridging

  • Is it possible to have a Netgear base station and an Apple Airport Express as the repeater? I looked at the Airport and couldn't find a MAC no.

  • Can I use a different wireless modem as the repeater instead of using the exact same model as the base? Please reply I need help.

  • can i connect the pc to the second router with the ethernet or will be problems? (also the base router is connected with the pc by ethernet)

  • you commented before saying that it's a stupid question if you can use a different netgear model. i have the netgear wireless-n 150 router wnr1000, and on that routerlogin page, it doesn't say anything about repeaters, or bridgeing on the side panel, so what should i do?

  • can i use any router to be a repeater, staying in the same brand of course, but can it be a different model?

  • Good video. Thanks dude.

  • Sucks that when this is used as a repeater you can only use WEP security. WPA and WPA2 are not compatible in repeater mode. Fix this Netgear......

  • Great informative how to video, thank you.

  • how do you do this if the base computer doesn't have wireless cause the routerlogin website won't work unless I'm connected to the internet so when I do the step at 4:55 I cant get back on to the website because I'm no longer connected. please help. (I have 2 of the netgear WPN824EXT routers if it matters)

  • I have 2 Netgear WNDR3700 routers. I have tried to set the second router up as a repeater using the video but I don't think its working as i'm still get a weak signal in areas I expect the signal to be stronger. How can I test to see if the second router is acting as a repeater? Also is there no way of using WPA2? Thanks

  • Comment removed

  • THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH.

  • it has to be the same router model ?>

  • can i use an ethernet cable to connect the modem to a switch and connect the router to the switch, will that work? the modem is far away from my room and i want the router in my room. i tried moving the router without plugging it in to the modem but it said conflicting IP address. i would do the repeating function but the router is more expensive than the switch can u help??

  • @radesh0430 I'm not sure what type of switch you are referring to. Does your PC in your room have wireless? If so, you can connect your modem to the router and then just connect wirelessly. After first setup, you don't need to stay wired to the modem or router. If your PC doesn't have wireless, there are a lot of inexpensive wireless modems available.

  • @howto4u I have a netgear wireless router/ DSL combo (wireless N) I want to expand the network with that do I need to get one of those for my network so my mom who is 5 apartments apartments away / 100 feet.. I bought a small wireless adapter which picks up a signal for her computer but it is picking it up very low. I did set it for 300 Mbps.. should I get a repeater to get a stronger signal?? thanks

  • @TheAngryAmericanwon Yeah, a repeater would help you extend the range.

  • Can you repeat a signal from a repeater?

  • @sliky74 No unless your firmware supports it.

  • This is one of the simplest tasks to complete after you have your initial router set up. To answer all the idiotic questions that have been asked.

Yes, you can use different models and makes of routers as long as they support the repeater function.

Also know that you give up half of your available bandwith when using a router that is set up as a repeater.

  • I understand how the process works, but how about if you are in range of both signals and the main router is weaker. Will the repeater still provide the best signal?

  • do the router and the other router (repeater) have to be the same kind like, i have a pk500 actiontec does the repeater have to be the same kind (actiontec) ??

  • @joeh690 The actiontec may not support Repeater Mode. Thats a Verizon Modem/Router correct? No they do not have to be the same. However if it is the same, it simplifies the setup.

  • @ResidentG33k - thanks, that's what the answer looking for

  • @joeh690 woops ---- the answer i am looking for

  • do i have to have the main router hooked up to a computer or can it be connected to the internet and that sends it wireless to my computer

    OR

Does it just need to be hooked up during the process and can be unplugged when done

  • @joeh690 Once both routers are setup properly such as in this video, you can disconnect the ethernet connection from the computer if you are using Wireless. The Ethernet Connection serves as a direct connect to the router during setup as Wireless Configuration can be unstable when changing settings around, causing it to disconnect and reconnect when making changes. If that makes sense.

  • @joeh690 Your second option. You need to have a connection with the router the first time you set it up, and then after that you can connect through wireless.

  • @howto4u thank you, very helpful

  • I was trying to figure out how to do this EXACT SAME setup. I actually have 2 WNR3500 original models. The problem occurs when I set up the repeater and give it the master's MAC address. After i apply it, it would go to a page that saids "can not connect to something like 192.168.1.1 _ WLG" or something like that. Is this normally what you get? And I would like to know if I would be able toconnect to the LAN ports on the "repeater" router and connect it to a computer on that side?n1know?

  • New routers are routerlogin net so if you are adding a repeter to old network use .com for old router .net for new

    hope this helps

  • wow,is all the info necessary all of the base information, cuz i wanted to do this for my apartment, free wifi, but i dont have any info on the apartments router

  • @AkumaRyu27 Attempting to obtain an unauthorized Wireless Access Point thats not yours may be against the law in your state based on Computer Privacy Act. Stop being cheap and just buy internet. Its under $25/month if you look in the right place. "DSLXtreme" is one of them. $14.95 for basic DSL Service.

  • wow,is all the info necessary

  • hi there great video,

Can this work with two other netgear routers?

    Thanks for the video!

    Peter.

  • @ferrari24680 Yes as long as the two Netgear Routers you're thinking about supports Repeater Mode or WDS (Wireless Distribution System)

  • i recently bought a new belin router and it works great, but one area in my house gets a low signal, ive still got the old one, does this set-up work on belkin devices to (they both have different ranges does that matter, ones G+, the other N)

btw awesome vid, funny too :D

  • I dont have that setting in config.

  • what a wussy

  • Also, using a repeater is said to cut your throughput in about half. In other words all devices connecting through the repeater will theoretically have a decrease in speed. Will it be noticeable with Internet surfing? Prob not at all. In my case I get the exact same speeds through the repeater as when connected direct to the router.

Gamers connecting through a wireless router will likely experience a lot of lag during game play when connected through a repeater. But its always worth a try.

  • Both routers do not need to be the same brand in order to set up a repeater. I am currently using a Netgear WND3300 as the "base" and a Linksys WRT54G using DD-WRT firmware as the repeater... this setup works great.

I was having trouble getting good signal in the basement family room so I configured the Linksys as a repeater, placed it in the living room which is right above the family room... and now we get 5 bars of signal in the family room from the repeater.

Both SSID's must be the same.

  • does the ssid on the repeater need to be the same as the base station?

  • I know this question has been asked a few months ago, but are you 100% sure that both routers need to be the exact same model? because that seems a little odd that Netgear would only allow a repeater to work if both routers are exactly the same model. Technically there shouldn't really be a problem that both routers are a different model, as long as they are made by the same company, right?

  • nice video healped a lot

  • too much face time....just simply explain how to set it up....less jibber jabber...easy instructions is all i need

  • does it have to be the same router

  • Oh man, if only it was this easy for the verizon fios routers. If anyone knows how to setup a wireless repeater if you have fios, please reply to help me!!

    Thanks.

  • does this work with linksys router, and if not, can you use a different router ?

  • will this help with being disconnected from xbox live?

  • i cant login to the router login i type the password and user name but it just flashes and disapers after i press enter. help?

  • never mined fixed it thanx for the tutoreal :D

  • the login details dosnt work for me its a netgear help :S

  • i cant find the repeater link on my router any help ?

  • HP computers are shit. They come preloaded with shit and it slowed down my friends laptop. I downloaded windows 7 from privte torrent(legit) and deleted vista and all hp shit. LOL i remember my friend smashing the hp recovery disc

  • Hey i have a question. i was able to setup my netgear WG602 v4 as a repeater but I;m having a heard time setting up a password for it. Can you help me out? thanks

  • qyuick question guys i had a standard netgear riuter at first, but then bought an N-seris router so i could get a better signal throughtout my house, can i use the standard router as a repeater with the N-seris as the base???

  • @triniboi9

yes as long have the option for repeter

  • ok can someone please tell me what bridge mode is?
