@pankhil2 Lol, yeah...He's not gay, he's just a "fabulous" guitar player ; ) But seriously, I don't remember him saying either way...but its safe say that he's got a unique sense of style. Ultimately, he's a great guitar player and his preference of hot dogs vs tacos shouldn't matter... i like that he's playing with the Foo's.
@wahlespaul If I remember right, this show was in '95 just when the Foo's started touring. William Goldsmith, shown here, was the original drummer. He was good when he drummed with Sunny Day Real Estate. When that band broke up, he & Nate Mendel joined Grohl's solo project since they were part of the Seattle music scene. Goldsmith just wasn't nearly as good of a drummer as Grohl. This tension caused Goldsmith to leave in '97. Grohl's friend, Hawkins, volunteered to be the Foo's next drummer.
@JacobWeinberg I see what you mean by Goldsmith not being as good. There is a huge difference between the studio and live versions of this song. Grohl just freakin rocks on drums, and once he's played a song, there's no topping him.
@JacobWeinberg Not quite right. Taylor and Dave didn't really know each other. Taylor was playing for Alanis Morrissette's band at the time and they called him for a reference when William left the band (yes, he left...watch 'Back and Forth' and both William and Dave explain it) and Taylor said hell yeah he'd audition.
Love this song, kinda forgot about it though due to all the new awesome albums they bring up BUT THUMBS UP IF YOU YOUTUBED THIS AFTER SEEING IT ON THE FOO DOCO!!??? Fuck yes
Anyone else see the references to "Pictures Of Lily" by the Who, or is that just me, idk if I'm pulling stuff outta my ass, but I can't help but think of it.
@dloban15 Well, there is a line in this song..."That's when I found Lily" so I guess both songs refer to a "Lily." But honestly, that's the only similarity I hear.
i remember when this show was first aired on tv. Still sounds good. this was berfore they went super mainstream and before Dave made his intros to chorus's like "woah yeah here we go",lol
@kw2709 lol, yeah dont remember when he started doing the "yeah here we go!!!" or whistle, then does the "here we go!!" but its seems silly to me too.
@kw2709 how the fuck is having a relationship with the crowd being "super mainstream" surely if they were "super mainstream" they wouldn't have just made a record in a garage and let everyone hear it for free, and they sure as hell wouldn't play the kick ass rock songs that they still write every year. they may have mellowed down a bit, but thats just maturing as an artist. Also popularity found them.
@pipandrew mainstream is just a label that hipsters put on anything that gets popular. They try so hard to be different from everyone else not realizing that its only making them more like us and that they're unable to develop their own personality.
Honestly, Taylor has never been able to reproduce the sound Dave can. Listen to the first 2 albums (drumming by Dave) and listen to Taylor play them. Not near the same.
@gunnohd I wonder though, is the difference in drumming due to the drummers or song writing? I mean, the album There is Nothing Left to Lose is mellow compared to The Colour & the Shape. Songs like Monkey Wrench & My Hero seem to have been written to make the drumming the focus of the song. But, Learn to Fly & the rest of that album was a lot more vocal-lyrical focused. Same with One by One, but the drums were more aggressive, like in Low, but Grohl wasn't happy with the sound of that album...
@MikeAP83 Yup...watching him back in 1995. Unfortunately, Carpal tunnel Syndrome set in a few years later. I lost track of him once Hawkins stepped in.
@SamcooStyle Pat Smear (lol) is playing guitar & William Goldsmith is drumming. Pat Smear & Grohl played together in Nirvana just before Cobain's death. William Goldsmith & Nate Mendel played together in the indie rock (emo?) band Sunny Day Real Estate. Sunny Day Real Estate broke up about when Grohl wanted to start touring with the Foo Fighter's first album. They all had connections to Seattle's music scene. Sorry for the quick & dirty history of the band, but I hope I answered your question.
not tryin to be an asshole i love dave but he got pretty weak with the foos not nearly as good as the first album he put out that was pure fuckin gold
@pot4tots Yeah, i get what you're saying & i agree. In the 80s I was in to metal, punk, and indie shit. Grunge continued with some of that sound, as you can hear in the first Foos album. But the Foos mellowed, so when There is Nothing Left to Lose came out, I was kinda let down. The last half of that album is "soft" if you know what I mean. That's why guitarist Franz Stahl left during its recording. Grohl has a soft side to him that he wants recorded, that's what we have to live with, i guess
@JacobWeinberg Franz didn't leave the band during the recording of TINLTL, he was let go before Dave's basement studio was even built. TINLTL is just Dave on vocals, all guitars, and drums, Nate on bass, and Taylor on about six songs.
@OldFooFan With a name like "OldFooFan," I have no reason to doubt you ; ) Well, thanks for clearing that up, keeping my facts straight about the Foo Fighter's formative years is a bit confusing. I've the impression of the Foo's at the time was that it was more like Grohl's "project" than a band. Pat, Franz, Goldsmith, & even Nate didn't see a future together at some point and looked to move on to something else. But, you obviously know the truth, i'm wondering if you were there in person : )
If there was ever a song the Foo Fighters have done that is a clear indication of his Nirvana roots. This is the song. i can just picture Kurdt Singing this song. RIP Kurdt.
shappy ..im not slag ya off for thinking that...as im still a huge fan ...but i liked the rawer grungier foo fighters from the early period...im not a huge of the softer stuff
I agree with lonewolf, I miss "angry" Dave, screaming his guts out. I really think the whole "skin & bones" album wasn't that good. The acoustic version of My Hero with keyboards and other crap, just about ruined the song.
It's funny to watch old videos and see how a little more serious Dave was with his performances. Not in the sense that he takes it less seriously now but it seems he's a little more 'loose' on stage now.
Yeah, I know...from what i heard, around this time Dave going through a messy divorce... "Enough Space," "Wind Up", and "My Poor Brain" seem very angry to me...but they don't seem to specifically refer to something crappy like a messy divorce though...Dave's happily married and has a kid now, so life is good.
I have tried a bunch of times to find this to download but can't find it. I recorded it when they aired it and that tape got eat up in the vcr which really pissed me off. Then about 3 or 4 years later MTV played it again and I got that one recorded but my sister ended up recording over it. Would you mind putting up Winnebago? I love the way they covered that song.
Good question, I would search bit torrents, but I don't know if a recording of the entire show was made. Or if a copy was made available for sale after the show. I only know that people just taped it off of MTV...
Well, according to the Foo's website, this song premiered Oct 16 1995. The first album were 12 of the 40(?) songs he wrote during Nirvana and just after. I suppose Dave's always writing and it just didn't make it on to the first album
