@johnmaveric5 Because he's a guitarist, never wanted to be a singer, drew a short straw to replace Ian Curtis as singer as they thought it would be wrong to bring someone else in. He mocks himself at 2.55 'I still find it so hard to stay in tune with you, but im quite sure that you'll tell me what the fuck we should do.' @johnmaveric5 Indeeed, he seems to be doing all his pitching/tuning during the actual show as opposed to during rehearsals. Fucking awful version of a great song.
@BipolarPics I was typing this video in to dance in my seat to the song and saw your post and laughed very loudly in my quiet office ...lol thank you for the hearty laughters
for 1984 this was a pretty good live performance considering midi was still in it's early days, as were reliable computers. plus, with how many parts there were to the studio recording of blue monday, it was probably physically impossible to recreate them all live back then. nowadays of course it can be done all on one computer but still lol
Im not surprised if this is light years away from how good sounding the studio single is. Blue Monday and Perfect Kiss is one of the most difficult to perform on a live set from New Order. No wonder they rarely play this live.
funny how when he had to reach a higher note, he would go an octave lower , hahah oh man, and as for the keyboards and drums: seems to all be prerecorded except for some very basic riffs - yeah, the music is good and props for them for creating it, but they really didnt do anything here, -it should hardly be called live. I love this song and this band
That was pretty ballsy to do this live!! Was very rough, but fuck, for being live, hats off to you guys! Especially it being way back in 1984 when sequencers were a penny a dozen!
This looks reeeeeeaaally complicated. All those keyboards/synthesizers, that strange electronic drum board thingy, B.S. moving back and forth from mic to keyboard... being a new wave brit-pop musician must be a difficult job.
Even Bernard Sumner admits he can't stay in tune with his improvised lyrics. I love New Order, but this video shows why they never hit U2 super status. Playing an instrument in a band is just like any other job. You have to do it over and over and over all day long to stay at the top of your game. Hopefully Bad Lieutenant (their new band) will encourage more focus and bring these guys to super stardom. All the ingredients are there, just needs a perfected mix.
I remember hearing the first few notes of this on the radio back in '83 - there was nothing that had ever sounded like it ever before, not even in punk or new wave. It either transfixed you or left you totally cold...like someone had seized my head with a giant pincers and said "YOU MUST LISTEN." NO took the cynical depressed lyrics of JD and combined them with inhumanly catchy dance music -.because You can't hang yourself if you're dancing.
Thumbs up if you were put onto this by PokerKnave or any other website chronicling the second wave of online poker indictments/shutdowns in the United States. This is great music, though . . . I don't listen to much mid-tempo 80's stuff at all but this makes me wanna get into it more!
@BipolarPics Believe it or not there was one summer when no one wore shorts. Everyone wore boxers, sometimes even a few pairs layered up. Personaly, i wore color boxers with bleach splatters.
---definitely there were no stylists then. You couldn't tell rock stars, or the kids how to dress back then, and that was the whole point.
"Sumner´s shorts"were worn by all men on the streets + at at ALL indoor+outdoor sport events all times ever before till about 1994.
The main villain for introducing trousers with lenghts down to the knees+even below was probably the incredibly boring Pete Sampras who was dominating the tennis courts from 1993-98. Even basketball players were still wearing shorts akin to Sumner´s in 1993.
Football players refused the new ridiculous conservative fashion dictate till about 2002.
Hilarious ! Never seen this before although around at the time - not seen anything this funny for a while ! Must have had a sherry or two before performing ! Brilliant
You should be aware of the fact that this "performance" of Blue Monday at BBC studios is most probably a REHEARSAL and NOT to be taken seriously as a valid rendition of the classic. Never watched musicians rehearse ?
Most people are here anyway to watch Bernie´s shorts.....LOL
@MrSKINFLICK Nope, this was it - it went out live on a Sat. afternoon, BBC2, - does sound like a rehearsal though. And it was very hot day that day hence the short-shorts.
@PostcardKittenMeow: Hope you don´t mind - i still love watching gay Bernie in his short shorts back the - being gay myself ! I was a musician myself + can tell the difference between a rehearsal + a seriosly meant performance, New Order wouldn´t even sound on stage like this here. And i know that New Order even have so much humour that they don´t mind this being here on You Tube !
@MrSKINFLICK Yes, the shorts do it for too, and I'm not gay. It was live, BBC 2, Sat. 8/25/84 - I watched it!. - it wasn't a rehearsal. I agree it sounds pretty 'Casiotone-ish' - I've seen New Order loads of times going back to '81 - they can sound great and they can sound bad. My fave' band though.
@PostcardKittenMeow: I watched Joy Division in January 1980 in Cologne and New Order in 2001 at the Palladium, also in Cool-ogne and both concerts will be in my heart forever. One cannot underestimate the impact both bands still have on music. I hope redundant things in music business will soon disappear and the music + its contents will come back soon.

@SuperDaffy007 You're just confused. If you didn't like this on some level, you'd have never would up here. I'll be the first to admit to my trolling habits. I know when I'm trolling, it's because I'm trying to get the opinions of others without all the fluff they tend to insert when you use "the front door" so to speak by asking them directly.
I love NewOrder to no end but Bernard's frequent changes in the key he sings in is pretty bush league, especially for a band that by this point was very "established". Disappointing, but my arm-chair record producing 26 years after the fact only accomplishes 2 things..."JACK" and "SHIT"
Playing with the octaves, so what a true performer makes you appreciate their talent even more. Goes to show the versions of these songs that became popular were a polished form and much a product of work and refinement.
@douzillac I was there for it all, the new wave era. if you want any music from then, i have it to share. all i can say "what a time it wassssssssssssss", so much different stuff came out.
@douzillac If you were British, yes, you would have been able to quite well. But as an American born in the early 70s, I can tell you that it was a heartbreaking effort trying to get local record stores to order in import 12" singles and setting the VCR to tape MTV from midnight to 2am every night in hopes that you might get a shot of one of their videos! Be happy to enjoy so many rare glimpses that we never got back in the day, thanks to Mr. Internet!
All I can say is the music in the UK in the 1980s was fantastic. New Order were the trendsetters and made dance music cool with this song. Unfortunately living in Toronto, it took a while for the bands to show up. Saw New Order twice in the 80's. Brilliant
I was born in 1970 and I remember hearing this when it came out. It sounded so strange yet the synthetic beat just hit you. True Faith got me into New Order but I hear this again and still its something Daft Punk would be proud of.
see bunches of probable no talents criticizing the artists... The fact that these guys weren't that polished of performers doesn't negate that they wrote some great words and someone was phenomenal at sequencing some great dance music. As a club DJ I can tell you this stuff can still pack the dancefloor. Yes it'sa bit out there but none the less great music. Someone who can produce music this good will have some success even if they freeze like a deer in the headlights before a camera

I saw a documentary where Bernie said they made a deal with the devil and then wrote their biggest hit "Blue Monday". Kinda makes sense, how else could they be so successful when they are such terrible musicians. They are terrible in every single live video on youtube. You can't blame every single time on drugs. Tons of bands are high when they play and it sounds better. I'm just amazed they get it so tight for the records. Must be a million takes or they fix it when they pass out.

i've watched all the videos from this session now, and man, bernard was NOT having a good day. The rest of them are on point though.

@andersrgk i have the whole thing on VHS and it's hilarious. Bernard was a bit wound up to say the least.

Internet!

@douzillac I am born 1970 .... oh yes blue monday was one of my most loved songs in the early 80ies. :-)

I was born in 1970.
