He mocks himself at 2.55 'I still find it so hard to stay in tune with you, but im quite sure that you'll tell me what the fuck we should do.' You just told him what they should do but as for being over rated as a song, listen mate, you don't sound like you have the knowledge to judge.

for 1984 this was a pretty good live performance considering midi was still in it's early days, as were reliable computers. plus, with how many parts there were to the studio recording of blue monday, it was probably physically impossible to recreate them all live back then. nowadays of course it can be done all on one computer but still lol

Im not surprised if this is light years away from how good sounding the studio single is. Blue Monday and Perfect Kiss is one of the most difficult to perform on a live set from New Order. No wonder they rarely play this live.

Even Bernard Sumner admits he can't stay in tune with his improvised lyrics. I love New Order, but this video shows why they never hit U2 super status. Playing an instrument in a band is just like any other job. You have to do it over and over and over all day long to stay at the top of your game. Hopefully Bad Lieutenant (their new band) will encourage more focus and bring these guys to super stardom. All the ingredients are there, just needs a perfected mix.

I remember hearing the first few notes of this on the radio back in '83 - there was nothing that had ever sounded like it ever before, not even in punk or new wave. It either transfixed you or left you totally cold...like someone had seized my head with a giant pincers and said "YOU MUST LISTEN." NO took the cynical depressed lyrics of JD and combined them with inhumanly catchy dance music -.because You can't hang yourself if you're dancing.

"Sumner´s shorts"were worn by all men on the streets + at at ALL indoor+outdoor sport events all times ever before till about 1994.

The main villain for introducing trousers with lenghts down to the knees+even below was probably the incredibly boring Pete Sampras who was dominating the tennis courts from 1993-98. Even basketball players were still wearing shorts akin to Sumner´s in 1993.

Football players refused the new ridiculous conservative fashion dictate till about 2002.

I agree it sounds pretty 'Casiotone-ish' - I've seen New Order loads of times going back to '81 - they can sound great and they can sound bad. My fave' band though.

But as an American born in the early 70s, I can tell you that it was a heartbreaking effort trying to get local record stores to order in import 12" singles and setting the VCR to tape MTV from midnight to 2am every night in hopes that you might get a shot of one of their videos! Be happy to enjoy so many rare glimpses that we never got back in the day, thanks to Mr. Internet!

I saw a documentary where Bernie said they made a deal with the devil and then wrote their biggest hit "Blue Monday". Kinda makes sense, how else could they be so successful when they are such terrible musicians. They are terrible in every single live video on youtube. You can't blame every single time on drugs. Tons of bands are high when they play and it sounds better. I'm just amazed they get it so tight for the records. Must be a million takes or they fix it when they pass out.
