Understood, however, the original solution was lye. Modern day pretzel makers may boil them in a baking soda and water mixture...I think 10 cups water to 2/3 cup bs and them paint them with an egg wash made of 1 yolk and 2 tbs of water

No, pretzels are dipped in a lye solution to give them that "pretzel" flavor. It is food grade lye but it is still poisonous if done in the wrong ratio.
