The beginning sounds quite a bit like the main theme of the first season of the War of the Worlds TV series. It was either an intentional homage or one hell of a coincidence.
@multitudeofidols This is a famous "classical" piece, and I would't be surprised to find out it influenced music for a TV series. The music, however, is not an homage to any TV theme, as it was written between 1914 and 1916, by Gustav Holst.
@classicnorthwest Yes, I meant the TV theme was an homage. And the more I think about it, the more I think it was intentional. Not only because of the obvious Mars/War of the Worlds connection, but also because the theme from the series long sounded fitting for a show that was (in its first season) about warfare. If they adapted elements from the Holst piece to utilise as a militaristic motif in the series, then it seems all the more appropriate.
a little interesting fact, i was watching an interview with geezer butler of black sabbath and he said that guitarist tommy iommi came up with the main riff of their self titled song while listening to geezer play holst's mars bringer of war on his bass. the part he was referring to is at 4:21
Found this when I watched that documentary of the Tsar Bomba, this was the theme song being played. Fit damn well, I must say, with that monstrosity of a bomb.
@MrAndersohn -FinalCutPro, i banged it out one sunday morning . . . i watch it now and wish i'd spent more time on it; today i'd use more Motion3 effects, or use it as a learning project for AfterEffects. You see the evidence of flowing water this week in the news? Big Mars Head, huh? (mgaheritage - logged in alternate id)
@MrAndersohn Dunno, last week i saw pictures of a crater (before, after&after) showing no flow, then a cascade down the crater's side and spreading out (white) like an avalanche; then evaporated and left no sign; may be due to internal heat/volcanic activity; Aside . . . i like the ideas of Mars once being full of primitive life and enduring impact and spreading life to Earth-after all, life took billions of years to even begin to develop here.
@mgaheritage Exactly what I saw, amazing thing. "...then evaporated and left no sign; may be due to internal heat/volcanic activity" it evaporated because of low pressure on mars : "Fresh water on Mars begins to boil at 10 °C." It can be liquid only underground. I like the ideas of Mars once being full of primitive life too . I made my video on YouTube about it ( if you interested type Ancient Mars (The Wet Planet) or you can find it on my channel .
I first heard it in the trailer for the movie GREYSTOKE: THE LEGEND OF TARZAN, LORD OF THE APES. I thought it was in the movie. They also played it in a commercial for Tarzan action figures. I always get a rush whenever I hear it, especially towards the end.

@riseofatheism -Too true, my friend, totally Awesome in my book . . . all the way through. A beautiful depiction of human emotions, experiences and classical mythology to music. Holst was in a groove when he composed this symphony.
@MissGryffindor07 - probably it is. Even the title gives some hint. "Bringer of War" - well, Mars was Roman god of war. While Ares - almost no difference, but he was Greek god.
this was also used as theme music on a lon ago brit tv series called "QUATERMASS EXPERIMENT" as a kid I used to watch this weekly and Mars has always stayed with me.Still one of my favourite pieces of music.
The music is Mars, the Bringer of War. It's the first movement of The Planets, composed by Gustav Holst from 1914-1916. This recording is performed by the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Charles Dutoit (I have this CD, among a few other recordings of The Planets, and this is my favorite).
This song was used in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. Specifically the part at time index 4:17, during the battle between Kirk and General Kang.
hahaha, the ending totally reminds me of one of the star wars themes...if i only knew which one exactly. i m pretty sure its from the empire strikes back though.
@asako23 NOOOOOOOOO lmao It shoudln't!!!! Starwars should remind you of this!:P This song was totally snipped by the music conductor/song writer of star wars. He stole all of his music from previous master pieces like these.
John Williams based a lot of his stuff on Holst's compositions. It's actually fun to listen and see as Williams starts to grow as a composer and come up with original ideas
John Williams and Hans Zimmer have both used this for inspiration for Star Wars and the Gladiator soundtrack(was also used later in King Arthur). It was also used in an old Earthworm Jim game but I dont remember which one. One of the classic epic songs though.

No for a simple reason: Mars has no atmosphere. It would be impossible for humans to survive on Mars. Just like you I was thinking the same for a short time. That's until I studied Mars a bit and I realized that it's impossible. Anyway it is very unlikely, it's more plausible say that it's a mere coincidence.
Wrong. Mars has a thinner atmosphere than earth. Almost all celestial bodies have some sort of 'atmosphere' they just vary tremendously in density and composition. Recent discoveries have detected Methane . . . many like Brian use this to speculate that it could have been produced organically (ie. via life, microbial); however, it's likely from geological sources like venting volcanos. Keep looking at the clouds, Brian . . . there's lots to see there!
