Queens require a different nutrition, and the larvae require protein. Neither are provided by the gel, so you could only keep workers for a few weeks before they died.

I got my ants yesterday. I found it in my room on the desk. Guess my dad didn't read the envelope: Open immediately. When I tried to put them in the habitat, I tapped the tube while it was in air, and they dropped on the table, and I totally freaked out, cause the instructions said they sting. xD I released 2 in my front yard, and 1 is dead. The rest are completely fine. They began to dig in less than 1 day. It's amazing. ^^

got this kit. havent been able to use it yet coz the ants i caught from my garden escape through the air holes!! Also, there is the little prob of getting them in there!

now, if they had designed a cheap air tool to suck them up - one at a time, and eject them into a separate compartment, that would have been better.

The ants arn't digging to make a colony, they're digging to try and escape. Oh and shnubbe16, no, they don't turn a worker into a queen. A queen is born from a already founded colony and then during a specific time in the year she has her nuptial flight which is when she mates and begins to found a her colony.

ive had my ant works for a while now and ive found they rle dont lik eating other bugs but they go crazy for busciuit crums and they dig like crazy. Also if u have chosen to use just normal garden ants then if u have enough they will create theyre own queen form one of the workers and the colony will carry on working for the queen. Also she creates eggs so your colony never dies!

Yeah, these ant farms are cool indeed. Surely you can get them all over the internet.

I used to have one myself. I have heard that "real" sand is more comfortable for the ants, but the gel in these farms is more stable, easier to observe, and also doubles as a food source for the ants. My only gripe was that the farm seemed small, but I guess almost any ant farm is.

If I had a ant town I would have different visitors for them on different days of the week, like Millipede Monday,Spider Saturday,Wasp Wedsday,Fly Friday,Tick Tuesday. I catched my ants from my garden, there is no way they can escape, for example mines are already so happy at the antwork that i can even open the farm and they don't escape, they work hard also! :D

All those giant ants you see every summer are queens, collect ONE(per ant farm), then leave her in the dark with wet cotton wool for a few weeks, then she will lay eggs and so on...best to get a proper ant farm with soil

and a dark cover on the sides when you aren't watching them, then feed them insects, sugar water and plain water and the colony should grow into the hundreds. These gel things weren't meant for ant colonies, just a few workers, ants dig to be secure in the dark, the only reason they are digging in the gel farms is they are looking for their old nest they were stolen from.
