  • Ecumenism is to be applauded and I enjoy your videos as well as your tolerance of spirited debate.

  • be simultaneously Catholic & Protestant

  • I suppose that's where Roman Catholics and Anglicans have to agree to disagree as we would say you are indeed Christians who are little c catholic but not Catholic as you are theologically at odds on several points of doctrine that the Catholic Church upholds and has always upheld Transubstantiation for example. You are certainly familiar with the early church's practice still used today of repentance penance and then readmission into communion with the church. We reject the notion that one can

  • Nothing can separate us from the love of God however. I'm curious what area of Paul's work is cited for this justification?

  • @sekenney88 Paul's writings about how we are divided by quarrels but that this isn't really the truth about us: 1 Cor. 1: 13 and thereabouts. As for me, I work toward visible unity among all Christians.

  • "catholic and reformed" yes but not Catholic and not without the "reformed" or Protestant piece

  • @sekenney88 Yes, you are right. But we are Catholic in the sense of part of the whole church. We are also part of the Reformation. Our way of putting it is that there are Roman Catholics, Anglican Catholics, Old Catholics, etc. But all are part of the whole Catholic Church. I take seriously the Pauline idea that Christ's body cannot be divided. And that you can't really be Christian without being Catholic (considering yourself part of a whole, rather than your OWN church that you started).

  • In what sense Father?

  • Actually the divine office is very catholic as are almost all things "Anglican" outside of the book of common prayer

  • @sekenney88 The Episcopal Church is Catholic too.

  • Actually the divine office is very catholic

  • thank you - this discussion was pleasant and informative. God Bless you sir

  • do anglicans make saints?

  • "Just like a human parent, God will help us when we ask for help." If your human parents helped you when you asked for help, I congratulate you. Mine never did (their response was invariably to deny that I had a problem and needed help, then they would return to their own concerns). I don't find theses analogies between God and human parents helpful. They just make me angry.

  • 47 years old and so confused....searching so hard for the truth. I just want to find that peace.....I am Christian but also universalist....anyway, i love your videos...i'm so wanting to find what i'm needing. Peace

  • @1macboo yeah me again...48 and still in the same boat.

  • Nice

  • Nice father Matthew, but if you can not go back to the Eastern Orthodox Church, this prayer has no effect?!

  • exellent !!! im a catholic priest and catholic romans and anglicans are 1 in roma and in ECCLESIA !

  • Not yet, but very, very soon.

  • Great video, Fr. Matthew.

  • Excellent as usual father Matt :D, I am an Anglican, with an oriental orthodox background, I love our anglican spirituality, as I always say, a spirituality of beauty.. Thank you 4 your videos... I enjoy them :)

  • can you teach me how to pray the anjelican way i am looking for an church to join i pray but i am still lost.

  • Message me, and could suggest a church community you could check out in your area. It can be overwhelming.

  • "We pray, not to gain anything, but because God's being draws praise from us" - the Book of Common Prayer (paraphrase)

I like to use the Great Litany for my daily meditations.

  • i am an anglican. our parish left the episcopalian church in 2005. things are still a mess. at least we have an american bishop now. our bishop was in africa, which nothing is wrong with that, other than the fact that they were thousands of m iles away. it was hard for confirmations and stuff like that. we were excommunicated by the episcopal bishop in our former dioscese. but oh well.

  • Can anglican women become priests? Or did Father Matthew accidentally say that, when he should have said nun?

  • Yes, women are priests in the Anglican church, just as able to represent Christ and the Church.

  • Glorthac: I attend an Episcopal church where the priest is a woman. She's wonderful!

  • no wonder there are more catholics

  • Is it not important to repent daily?

  • You are going to make an excellent Catholic priest one day soon

  • you sound like a very nice practical priest. our minister drives me crazy...i can't wait till she leaves!

  • At least you priest does not tell you how your not living like Jesus, and you not giving the amount of money you need to give to the Church as a true Episcopal in every Serman, as Father Andy Anderson of Huntsville AL does

  • i think pastors lose their calling as fast as they find it. ours is very controlling, she has to have her hand in everything that goes on..and usually messes up whatever's going on. just so long as she's got the last word. is that the point of being a pastor? having control over a bunch of ppl?

  • We have to ask Andy if we move anything, I even mean a book on our desk lol

  • I use the BCP daily, i will not use the BAS, it is to laxed

  • The book of common prayer has some nasty bits in it. I tore those pages out!! The book is a bit thin now....but more inclusive towards women. I recycled the pages, which made me feel better about myself.....and happier in my prayer life.

  • praying is not hard at all, you just thank him for what he has done for you and ask him for help of what you need help with, its not that hard at all

  • @Kosher92: Try doing the Daily Office from the BCP sometime and see how your prayer deepens. Do it twice a day for two weeks. You'll get HOOKED! (Pun semi-intentional.)

  • Of course, I think we should pray all throughout the day. As Ephesians 6:18 says...(NLT)

Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere.

    =D

  • You forgot the option of singing the Daily Office! The choral tradition that grew out of Evensong is what got me interested in Anglicanism to begin with.

  • im a anglican altar server in the maritimes of canada, i dont understand why the episcopal church is having same sex blessings doesn't the bible say straight up homosexuality is wrong in 1st corinthians 6:9, could you should some light on this Father

  • Excellent. I love the "work out" moment. I was ordained in the Episcopal Church but am up in Canada for the time being. The thing I miss the most about the ECUSA is the '79 BCP. -t

  • Even though I am a conservative Lutheran, of the Missouri Synod type, I enjoy your blogs, and have now subscribed. I also try to pray the Divine Office out of the Lutheran "Brotherhood Prayerbook (BPB)". The BPB contains the Psalter and a lectionary chart for all the readings. It's also pointed beautifully for Gregorian Chant and can be done alone or with a group. Keep it up, and Christe Eleison.

  • Anglicans use such weird terminology; what's an "office" in this context? (Is it anything like the room I'm sitting in right now?)

    Love the vids.

The Episcopal Church preaches 21st century doctines but looks so 16th.

  • So "officium" is a combo of the Latin "opus" which means 'work' or 'task' and "Facere" which means "to do" So, it makes sense that your office room is called an "office". The "Daily Office" makes the same sense, given that it is the prayerful tasks we do every day.

And Episcopals are retro and futuro at the same time, good point!

  • I think that 'facere' means 'to make' and 'dare' means 'to do'.

  • Liked this vlog also - btw, I did see on a random blog someone had posted about your vlogs and how much they liked them! You're getting to be famous on Youtube and the blog world!

  • It's Now I lay me down to sleep....I pray the Lord my soul to keep...If I should die before I wake...I pray the Lord my soul will take

  • That's what my wife (whose always right) says too! But my mother's version is what I learned.

  • I like your version much more. Had never heard it before.

  • Doesn't matter which one ! They all count !

  • "Wife"? Oh no - I forgot to check the left hand! My nebulous imaginings are dashed! ;)

  • his mom gave him the not so "oh god am i gonna die??? D:" version lol

  • I think that was once of your best blogs! Everything must be built upon prayer. :-)

  • ONE of your best, rather.... :-)

  • "very anglican" niiiiice! :)
