Poor guy was living in a box inside another box. You think his owner could have at least plugged the tub drain up because I know from experience that a scared monitor will quickly try and hide in the first dark place it can.
i had my nile monitor for 15 yrs and with the exception of when i first got him as a hatchling, he never bit me...but he was always aggressive. But i even got to the point where i would walk him with a leash.
I mean, I've had an iguana before that was 3 feet long, and whenever he was pissed he inflated and deflated his dewlap like that over and over again.
But he's beautiful, nonetheless.
AND, if you keep just sitting there with it, it actually WILL help over time. Just don't force it to do anything, like you said, and no sudden movements. :)
the best way to build trust with your lizard is to not force him to do anything he doesnt want to do. you should try hand feeding him, that will get him to learn to like you because you bring him his food. when he gets a little less scared of you then you can try getting him to climb on you to get his food then after his used to climbing on you he should do pretty good with being picked up. =]
@jeffevens13 you actually think you can build trust with a reptile? at best i think they tolerate you, but to think you can build trust, is a bit delusional...
@romuloruiz dude never hand feed ur tegu then hes gona aaccotiate u with food and when u put ur hand in there guess wat hes gona think it is ? ya know hes not gona be as social as tegus can be check out thetegu.com they help so much
@rollitbakeit yeah he never got tamed i tried everything in the book and nothing worked. I had to get rid of him because he was worst than a nile monitor I had.
did you get him as a baby or as a juvie like in the vid? the tub trick works if the nile is a baby not the one you have in the vid. AND some niles as juvies dont tame at all, it really depends on the nile.
they are very cheep but nile monitors are a very bad choice of monitor for anyone. not only are they very expensive to care for but they need alot of room, at least 16ft x 10ft x 6 ft (the 6ft does not include the at least 4ft of dirt needed to dig in) and it will never be calm enough to be held or let you pet it. if i were you id look into something smaller like a red ackei or even a Savannah monitor (if you have the room).
i noticed that you kinda controdict yourself, you say that you wont force him out of his cage and into a box but you foced him out of the box and into your hand, i dont really understand, im sure he gets stressed even more being moved around so much, nice monitor though. he does seem like a very nice animal, and what you should do is take him out of the cage a few times a day and put him in your room and watch him and kinda lay around with him. thats what i do and they seem to love it. nice vid.
Hi Jeff, have a look at my video - this is my lace monitor that I've now had for nearly 2 weeks. I have been hand feeding him but have now switched to tongs and bowl so that he doesn't go for my hand when he's older. Yes, I agree with the "no stress policy" for them - mine's making such quick progress that in about a week's time I think he'll be very close to climbing up my arm as he's climbs onto my hand now.
I just got a Nile Monitor and he looks just like yours! I'm in the process of getting him used to me as well. Your right about how some people are quick to judge/be mean to animals who are just scared and are not being agressive.
you should just let your nile come to you from in its cage. i was stubborn and had to see for myself that taking him out of his cage would only stress him out but at the verry least i learned from my mistake. now i know that the best way to build trust with a nile monitor is to not stress it out AT ALL and just let him be a lizard and IF he is ok with it, try tong feeding and then MAYBE one day he will be ok with climbing out onto you on his own free will.
Sorry, but working with monitors for 10 years tells me that isn't the way to go about getting your monitor used to you. You should leave him in his cage and have him come to you for food/inspection. When he realizes on his terms that you are not a threat, he'll chill out.
ya we were dong that for a wile and he "chilled" out pretty good(in my opinion) so i thought i would take it to the next level by taking him out of his cage and bringing him in the tub with me. i have only been taking him out for almost a week now and the first 2 days he was kinda scared and would just sit on my arm with his throat puffed out and would his when i touched him and the second day i fed him in the tub and now he lets me pet him and he actually likes being pet behind the eyes!
and today he just started walking around while we are it the tub(when befor he was to scared) and when he was walking around i put my hand in front of him and he actually climbed up on to my hand(on his own free will)and just sat there(probably because he likes my body heat). i know you are just trying to help me and i know you are a very good monitor keeper who is just expressing your own poinion, so i just wanted to let you know that i respect your opinion and i dont mean any disrespect at all
verry nice . if you can hold him in a way so your body heat is tranfering to him [laying on your arm ] he will like to stay .and feeding him is a big + it gets them to forget the stress there under at the time.
yes you are very right, when i first get in the tub with him he is usaly all crazy and running all over the place but as soon as i start feeding him he just forgets all about every thing els and then i can pick him up and he will just sit on my arm until i have to put him back in his cage =)
This is the lizard i wanted 6 years ago when i was a 6th grader, but mom said no. ended up with bearded dragons. One day i will own one. but the bearded dragons are fine for now. mine are mad chill. love reptiles and its cool that ur makin the vids. Keep it up, ill keep watchin.
beardies are cool!!! i used to have one but he died of old age ='( and nile monitors are cool you just have to be redy for it =) and thaks for the support =D i will be sure to make lots more vids!!!!
well there are 2 monitors that are pretty good for common theres the savannah monitor and the ackie tha ackies dont get as big and they are very easy to tame down =) just make sure to do LOTS of research befor you get any thing =) and feel fee o ask any questions you might have =)
ik u need a cage 8x4x4, but if i had a 8x2x2, but let him out for hours at a time, wuld tht work

ok two things. 1. get your ass out of tub. 2. put water in the tub. ( put the water in before the monitor.)
