Metallica have been my favourite band for 5 years. It annoys me how people say St Anger is shit because it doesnt sound like old Metallica... So what lol its still a mint album... Few metal albums can be as good as Puppets, but you're right that Death Magnetic is a real comeback to the progressive thrash that we've all loved from them.

I know I'll get railed for saying this, but Load and ReLoad were never as bad as people made them out to be.  Sure they were alternative instead of thrash, but you can't expect a band to make the same album over and over again. Load/ReLoad were better than a lot of alternative rock albums in that period.

Obviously, if you look at this album with zero consideration: Yes, its not that great. Now, give it some thought: James and all the other members are over 40, James ruined his voice back then, seeing what he can do now is pretty impressive, they did better than the last 3 albums. Oh, and you will never see Iron Maiden releasing another Powerlsave or Number of the Beast, neither will Megadeth release another Peace Sells or Rust in Peace. Giving something a chance and some thought can help a lot.

Absolutely right on. You've got to appreciate this stuff for what it is. If anything, I've come to appreciate the way that Metallica swung and grooved in the 90's instead of doing the same old thrash bit. It was an interesting change of pace, and now that I'm not obsessively demanding Metallica to be what I think they should be, I can appreciate it for what it is: pretty good groovin' alternative rock. Better than a lot of '96 and '97 for sure. It'd be boring if they always did the same...
