  • I go with 'the machiniest' 100% on this. The Isla Cameron connection is ridiculous - she sings it unaccompanied for christ sake. Anyway, the evolution of Black Mountain Side is pretty well known...the Al Stewart connection and teaching it to Jimmy Page etc. One thing's for certain, Jimmy Page didn't write it although he claimed to, and that's plagerism.

  • His posture style and head nod as he plays the last harmonic and then the note while he bends the string against the headstock just reeks of "I AM THE MESIIIIIIIIIIIIIIAAAAAAHHHH"

  • He... Is a god.

  • Any one heard of Anne Briggs? She shared a flat with Bert Jansch and taught HIM the song. Jansch adapted it, then Pagey came along and adapted that, the song is probably looslely based around an old english folk tune. Briggs was an expert. Page was right to put 'Page' in the credits. You can't credit everyone, the list would be too long.

  • @feldmannpaul Your correct - Anne Briggs, one of the best British Folk singers, taught Bert the Irish folk song. With regards to the instrumental guitar being played here, have a read of my post below. It will tell you everything you need to know.

  • Crap quality. Couldnt someone have done something with the picture ??

  • 50pc crap 50pc magic

  • It's like each finger has its own brain. Amazing...

  • holy tune

  • god came, played the guitar and then left

  • So where's the Jimmy Page acoustic album? I want him to make one!

  • People need to know who wrote these songs. It is disgusting that other people's songs are still being credited to Led Zeppelin, surely they have made enough money from being scam artists already.

THIS SONG: "BLACKWATERSIDE" - BERT JANSCH

and "WHITE SUMMER" - DAVEY GRAHAM

Go check them out, they are both great musicians and composers.

  • @themachinist1000 Yes Graham is especially great and Im a HUGE fan of him.

But to call zepp scam artists is igorant the songs were never FULLY taken just a portion all it needed was a credit!

Lets agree that both are amazing.

BTW the only reason people even get pissed at this is because zep made ALOT of money

  • @kildare97 Zep certainly did make a lot of money and it's as good a reason as any to get pissed, particularly because a significant portion of the money isn't rightfully theirs (or their label/distributors). It's also because they were so rich that a lot of the artists who wrote the music were put in such a difficult position, wondering whether it was viable to try and take on the biggest band in the world in a court of law.

  • @themachinist1000 Zeppelin should have given Graham money for the performance DEFO

But honestly it was really only lyric problems and a lot of time it wasnt TRUE TO THE WORD plagarism

  • @themachinist1000 Scratch that.

The song was credited Trad.arr By graham so no money was owed.

Still though considering Graham wasn't making much Jimmy could have gave him something in return

  • @themachinist1000 yes and who did Bert Jansch get Blackwaterside from? and where did she get it from? I'ts a version of some folk song from hundreds of years ago, it belongs to everyone. BTW, Jimmy and Jansch were mates.

  • @wiskeyinthejarro He got it from himself. You do realise that guitars do not feature in hundred-year-old Irish folk songs, don't you? "Blackwaterside", the traditional, is an unaccompanied folk song sung in the key of D. What was taken from Bert was an ingenious and complex guitar part he had written to accompany himself whilst singing this song. Please put two and two together.

  • @themachinist1000 Actually Jansch took it from Isla Cameron.

BTW Other people This is a Medley Featuring Jansch Casbah,Black water(mountain)side and The most obvious She Moved through the fair.

  • @kildare97 Of course! How could I forget the guitar virtuoso Isla Cameron, with her significant relevance in Bert's writing of the instrumental ornament to his version of 'Blackwaterside'! Seriously though - read what I wrote to whiskeyinthejar. Pretty much sums it up.

  • ilike it

  • Why do people keep reminding everyone that this is a Davy Graham arr. Jimmy Page.

Why not go to bert janschs videos and write messeges how bert did not write these.

You would get headaches with the extreme level of retards on youtube

  • @kildare97 I'm trying to make sense of what you wrote, can you explain it to me?

  • @themachinist1000 People never shut up about how page didn't come up with this.

What Im saying is Other folk musicians(Bert Janshc etc..)When they have a unoriginal song nobody pisses the fans off by saying(Bert Didn't write this)But they do it on this.

Page NEVER claimed he wrote this

  • @kildare97 Yes, people don't shut up about it and I won't shut up about it as long as I see videos claiming this song to be his with various people pondering things like "How did Jimmy come up with this tune man what a legend". Type in Led Zeppelin I in wikipedia and scroll to the bottom, this song is STILL credited to Page, on an album HE PRODUCED. The only reason he got away with it is because Bert's label didn't have the money to sue Led Zeppelin. Page is a lying fraud.

  • @themachinist1000 page clearly said in interviews that he didnt come up with it.

and its pretty obvious anyway(well to me since i was into DG wen i heard this

  • @kildare97 I hear what you're saying, but I have yet to listen to or see an interview where Jimmy says anything about this tune. He did mention Jansch back in the 70s and said that he loved his music, but that's it. Why can't he credit Bert and pay him royalties for his song then? Bert has said in an interview that whenever he's met Jimmy, Jimmy can't look him in the eyes. I don't think I would be able to either.

  • I love Jimmy.

  • @RemainingSheep

    Oh god I wish...

  • I wish they had better footage, none the less badass song!

  • I own that guitar! Awesome!!

  • @robbie1070476

Not that one right or are you just lucky ?:P

  • Maravilhoso!!!!!!

  • where the hell did you get this tape?!

    awesome thanks for sharing :)

  • I giri di chittarra di Jimmy sembrano scolpiti nell’ambra

  • this is on my birthday!! just 25 years before i was born :)

  • I'll be one of six who dont like this.......if you can steal a traditional tune, it's this and Davy Graham 's arrangment. Sorry, Jimmy, it's a clunky version at best.....better listen to Mr Graham's After Hours album to listen to a better flowing version. Rory Gallagher also did fab acoustic guitar stuff........

  • @Deebemc Can you do it better? Oh, right..

  • @MysterioFan02 .......can still sing it for sure and used to do a decent version on 12 string. But I would always give credit to whomsoever wrote/arranged/covered it...unlike Jagger/Plant/Page etc

  • @Deebemc Uncountable blues artists stole other artists stuff and didn't credit them.

  • wow

  • looks like 7 people doesnt want a white summer

  • i nvr new god culd play guitar

  • simply magnificent

  • voting for DADGAD..why? because Jimmy Page says it so...in that scene from "It Might Get Loud", he said it's the same tuning he did for Kashmir.

  • i think this sound quality is awesome, it gives it a almost ancient feel.

  • DADGAD, Graham came up with in attempt to reproduce the sound of the oud. she moved through the bazaar was to show the similarites between celtic music and asian.

  • He's a genius

  • It's DADAAD, that's what created the drone. If there was an A, it would clash with the G. Duh!!!!

  • @good20004323 shows how much you know. dunce its DADGAD.

  • @good20004323 actually G and A work quite well together...

  • @good20004323 umm no DADGAD is technically an open tuning for a D sus4 chord it doesnt clash try it out its really quite an interesting tuning

  • Grande Jimmy

  • this is why i think he is the best EVER, i mean, you dont see the other "guitar gods" being able to rock the acoustic in the same way that he does. inspiring.

  • DUDE....HOW CAN 5 PEOPLE DISLIKE THIS...IT IS ABSOLUTELY AMAZING

  • one of the most beautiful pieces in the world...

  • i love the ending!!!!

  • te amo

  • Jimmy Page is a fine guitarist and you can see the passion that he put into this song as he plays it. He is a true guitar god.

  • bagdad tuning what would that play

dadgad always looked like the name of a caravan town to me.

  • wow, very cool... love the gibson acoustic. a lot of this was improvised, and that is amazing. i love the part around 3:45, should have made a song out of that - he did create 'midnight moonlight' out of improv parts from this song.. my favorite guitarist of all time

  • i did a version too!

    watch mine!

  • Please put up the whole video, if there is an interview i would love to see it!

  • Like a Dream To See This No Matter What the Condition

  • white summer is definitely she moved through the fair and black mountain side is black water side!

  • godly, best guitarist ever.

  • @SoldierKing69

Eric Clapton is a great guitar player, but he has nothing on Jimmy Page. Not the inventive creativity or skill. I hate when "Best Guitarists" lists put Eric above Jimmy.

  • by the way the version of jimi is more particular and cute

  • She Walked Through the Fair - Davey Graham !!!!

  • "Black Mountain Side" was inspired by a traditional Irish folk song called "Down by Blackwaterside",

Check out ,Bert Jansch "Black Waterside"

  • it is not "out of tune".

it is in a different tuning.

    DADGAD

    instead of the standard.

    EADGBE

  • she emphasized on the word "talented"... hmmm it makes me wonder what they where doing backstage.lol

  • Comment removed

  • the reason why it sounds kind of out of tune is the bad camera

  • bad graphics!

    video was great, though!

  • Great solo jimmy

  • What a beautiful Gibson acoustic.

  • Yeah, my guitar is tuned to dadgad, thanks

it sounds like im swimming in a led pool, is that descriptive enough

  • @PeachRobbler

It's not out of tune. <_< It's in dadgad tuning.

  • No, of course not. Sorry.

  • Are there only three strings on that guitar?! I really can't tell.

  • Jimmy Page is the greatest guitarist EVER and he looks like he's having quiet a good time just playing his guitar from what I can see

  • R.I.P Davy Graham

  • folk music at its best. love it!

  • It's 'She Moves Thru The Fair' - Trad' & DADGAD - He's been known to follow it with Kashmir (also DADGAD) - met him once at Heathrow off an LA flight - tiny statured man but had more luggage than I thought was ever possible!

  • ...Shit he's genius and I don't want anyone to reply to this comment saying ohh it isn't his song he's just copying another writer and not giving credit because he does give credit and if anyone asked him he'd say where he got his influence

  • chi non prende ispirazione da arrangiamenti di altri artisti?!..chiunque!

    Page era/è un profeta!

  • April 26 is my birthday o.O

  • thats incredible.....it is so much harder on acoustic

  • Oh man, this is gorgeous. :D

  • Does anyone know how the play the part starting at 1:36 ?

  • He's my biggest inspiration. Love to see him perform. I just look and listen and wonder how someone can be so amazing!!! but then, It's Jimmy Page. So it's just normal!

  • Page is great, but it is important to remember he he took a song from Davy Graham (that he turned into White Summer) and one from Bert Jansch (that he called Black Mountainside) and called them his own (he did it with several other songs as well, but those are the two represented here). I have no problem with borrowing and reinterpreting, but he should give credit where it is due.

  • These tunes belong to Davy Graham and Bert Jansch, almost note for note. As far as I know jimmy doesn't acknowledge that explicitly. It's really scummy. The guitarists mentioned need more attention, especially the late great Davy Graham.

  • 5 stars you rock \,,/

  • how to play it after 3:50? :D

  • Comment removed

  • can someone please tell me how to play that riff at 3:15 !?

  • Second string from top (A) and second string from bottom (a) - second fret - slide to fourth fret - hit bottom string open-bend second from bottom string fourth fret-hit bottom string open. Clear as mud? If you can do that I'll try to explain the second part.

  • sniff cocaine

  • excellent acoustic guitarist

  • He's still the Man !! thanks for the post.

  • this song is simply musical genius at its finest. thats the least i can say. there are fewer artists that can write songs as good as jimmy page

  • That's true, although he didn't compose this.

  • The "White Summer" part is Davy Graham's version of "She moved thru the bizarre" and "Black Mountain Side" was "Black Waterside" arranged by Bert Jansch. Page idolized both of those guys. You should check out both of them here on youtube. In many of his later live versions of this, he also incorporated "Mustoupha" also by Davy Graham. If you love Page's acoustic style, you might like those guys. Their vids are on youtube. Check them out...after all Page loves them.

  • thanks ill check em out

  • But page also improvised a lot.

So even though he didnt compose it, he still did make up certain parts.

    :P

But in the end he stole it.

He didnt do it any harm though.

  • @adamkotta888 i think you'll find the spelling is "bazaar"

  • @nfsfreak72 Argh, you're right!. lol @ "bizarre". (rolls eyes at self)

  • He didn't write these songs. "White Summer" is taken from "She Moved Thru the Bazaar" which is an arrangement by Davy Graham of an old Irish folk tune. "Black Mountainside" is almost note for note (minus the lyrics) of an arrangement by Bert Jansch of another traditional folk tune.

A large percentage of Zeppelins' music were reworkings of other artists' songs, most of which were not given credit. Some have won lawsuits & their names are in the credits now, but many still go unrecognized.

  • would you just shut the fuck up with this unnecessary information? im fucking tired of this, the whole world knows it, and still led zeppelin is known as the greatest rockn roll band that ever existed, so shut up and enjoy the wonderful talent of jimmy page

  • LOL Chill out. I was replying to someone who brought it up. And no, most people DON'T know it. What is wrong with information? I am a huge Page fan. It doesn't change anything, but facts are facts.

  • well, he took the music and changed it around. but it is sample from their music yes. He didnt write ''white summer'' or ''black mountainside'' but he wrote ''white summer/black mountainside''

  • jajaja, it's true

  • Jimmy Page is a major influence in my musical expedition. I learned of this tuning from him, and I have composed my own song from the same tuning. Check it out if you like. Thanks!

    "SONGBIRD" BY DAVID JASON

  • This was originally broadcast 39 years ago today. Or yesterday actually.

  • What tuning?

  • DADGAD

  • Thanks for responding, I appreciate it.

  • @triangletheorytrey can you play it all yet? :)

  • Fucking amazing baby :D

  • god I would pay anything for this in better visual format .... awesome 5* all the way

  • poor video its a shame

  • my influence!

  • Man , its because of this music, and that guitarist over there that im playing guitar today.Everytime i see i cant play a music...i listen to this song...damn it feels great...makes me think like "go out there, dont give up, you will learn it."

its hard to explain my feelings about this music...its just...great.

  • indian music influenced this song and style

  • true...

  • Really the song is a complilation of a couple of Bert's songs. When you listen to "She walks through the Fair" you hear this song, as well as another tune that he calls "Black Waterside" weird that Jimmy named it Black Mountainside.

  • A lot of people critique Jimmy as a rip-off of Bert with this song, which is actually retarded if you've heard the two, they're completely different, and Jimmy has played this one so many different times that we really don't have any particular version that can be considered definitive.

  • actually its davey graham, bert jansch ripped off davey graham,

  • really really really incredible song and guitarrist.

  • maaan i need to get more shrooms now...play this song for 4 hours straight...yupyupyaaaabuddy. But not on repeat tho...i always lose track of time with repeat on.

  • hahah!

  • Does anyone know what tuning he used on this?

  • DADGAD

  • By 1970 Jimmy Page was a very mature talent. This music goes back to his acoustic roots and the likes of Davy Graham - a good eight years before this recording.

Led Zeppelin were always good assimilators of different types of music.

  • dont foget bert jansch!

  • I saw this and fell in love with the tone and look of that guitar. and plus there's only a few guys who can wear that shirt and not look like a moron.

  • I love Jimmy Page, I love Led Zeppelin, and I love White Summer, but this video is such crappy quality.

  • I really love Jimmy, but he seems like he's rushing out of there. Like, he's playing pretty fast, and not relaxed how he usually does... I still think he's a genius and he's my favorite lead guitar player ever.

  • well he probably had like a 5 min time slot he had to fit into on the show or something
