Thanks for sharing it. I heard that due to HFCs, the gamelan music affects the brain activities. How long you have been playing it and have you noticed any improvement in your brain? Thank you.
I believe playing gamelan music positively affects the brains activities, not only due to the HFC's but also due to the rote learning and memorization of the music. I've been playing Balinese gamelan for over 25 years and feel my brain is doing well! :-) I'm able to continue learning and memorizing new pieces as well as calling up old pieces. Actually imho I believe that playing, as well as listening to Gamelan, has many positive effects on our lives and brains. Thanks for asking!
@mariabodmann Thank you, friend for your reply. It's true and you're right. You are lucky that you can play this music and playing it so long time. This special music is sonic that is why so useful, healthy for our brain, I believe. Thanks and kind regards. by the way, after 11:11 today, in this special day, I felt different, if my energy's tuned, feel amplified and tuned. I wonder how do you feel today? thanks again.
They generally use two scales, slendro and pelog (there are accents on the E's). Slendro divides the octave into 5 pitches and pelog into 7, fairly evenly spaced. I think there are some other tunings they use as well.
FANTASTIC, Guys !!!! EXCELLENT !!! Thank u for your appreciation in Indonesian traditional music. Salute, because Gamelan is quite a complicated orchestra, however, it sounds really relaxing. Thank u very much indeed. Bravo !!!
Thank you for your comment and all the others! Glad you all enjoy our Chamber Gamelan. We just had a fun concert on Sunday - outdoors on a beautiful Southern California day in a picturesque setting. Wish someone videoed it - if I find that someone did, I'll upload it! maRia
Maria and Cliff, you have done a great job. Your spirit and enthusiasm have made the Balinese Gamelan music played by two to six players, starting from "Gender to Bale Ganjur" well accepted in your community. I trust in the next few years to come, your will have a complete "SEKEHE GONG HOLYYWOOD BOWL" and participating in the Balinese Art & Culture Festival yearly. Keep posting it.
WAO!! Great stuff, very dynamic, and you look so relaxed playing. I've heard one of those pieces before, around 4:34, (what's it called?)I remember it well because I almost thought it sounded like a strum instrument,..very very tight playing!! I can't get my head around how the have such good timing! Thanks for uploading
i remember listening to this music when i was 14 in Bali, it's so relaxing and nice to chill out to. It really does remind me of the Balinese/Indonesians, I'd love to go back there one day.
I was looking for some of it in MP3 format, can anyone help me out? thanks
They're as good as any Indonesian. But I realise that authenticity is an issue in the marketplace. But not from this particular consumer. They got Kotekan down. Can play it in their sleep. They're Bitchin' and might even have something over many Indonesians about what facets of gamelan that westerners might enjoy more. Jaap Kunst would be proud.
We play Gamelan because we love it, and btw authenticity has no color. We also play Gamelan for the same reasons Asians play piano or Yo-Yo Ma plays cello. Perhaps you should read the comments on your profile...
that's soooooooo funny because I dont appreciate asian people trying to be european which includes playing the piano or whatever eropean musical instrument there is. I'd rather listen to rostropovitch than yo yo ma.
2006 and people still care what nationality someone is? music is music, people are people. take scottish bagpipes, they are actually from india, and the harmoniums used in traditional music from pakistan and india are from europe.

Is there a particular pentatonic scale that is used for Gamelan music? If so, what is the Indonesian scale?

Cool. If I were in charge though, I'd add a drumset, a guitar with a wah pedal, and a cello. But yeah, awesome.
