From my almost nonexistent knowledge in Japanese culture and also from my observation skills I assume she is an entertainer in training and is then promoted to a full time entertainer through the new kimono over coat or whatever...
huh...even the japanese fucked up... she is supposed to be a maiko in training right? The flower tendrils are for junior maiko...their bottom lip is painted...but kokoro's lips are both painted like a senior maiko...not even.. like a geisha...man they fucked it alllll up.
@kittenbut1 After the 4th tournament, Kokoro returned and continued her Maiko training. The flower tendrils are a type of Kanzashi known as bira-bira. The type of kanzashi you're thinking of are Ogi which are traditionally worn by Maiko. They are basically metal fans placed above the temple. The makeup ordeal has nothing to do with ranking, however, the ending pretty much explains her promotion to a Geiko. This is untradinitional as only women between the ages of 20-22 can be promoted to Geiko.
A Geisha is not a prostitute. On the contrary, they are entertainers. What you see in the clip is her training with various instruments. When she has all the make up on, she's getting ready to perform. In Japan, they have a certain style of opening doors. It has to be very intricately done.
But Geisha's were also sometimes employed/kept as courtesans as well as entertainers in older time periods, which is, in a way, a prostitute. Marriage wasn't defined then like it was today. A wife wasn't the lover as much as she was the one in charge of domestic affairs of the household. It was common for men to have multiple lovers, and Geisha often played this role.
Though, Geisha today are solely entertainers and keep artistic styles of ancient Japan alive.
@Cloverless Geishas were not the original prostitutes. Oiran were the originals, but some offered more than sex, and began entertaining in other ways. This is how the Geisha came to be. To protect the business of the Oiran, Geisha were put in pleasure cells, and had sex without money. This changed however, when the style of Oiran became old, and the Geisha were the new "it" factor. Not all Geisha are prostitues, and Kokoro is no exception. She doesn't seem to be training in that style of Geiko.
Lol run kokoro run!

So what motivated Kokoro to take up bājíquán, the same martial art practiced by Virtua Fighter's Akira Yuuki and Tekken's Leo Kliesen?
