This isn't doing it for me. Sinatra is an absolute master of phrasing and his laid-back articulation ruins the bossa. This has got to be a lot more spot-on.
@Superphilipp True, he is a master of phrasing, but I don't think it ruins the song or bossa. Just a different feel. Stan Getz put his own stamp on this piece with Astrud Gilberto, you could say the same about STAN but nevertheless it went down a storm! :) Each to his own right? MC

When he originally recorded this tune with Jobim in the mid 60's I think he was more into the artistry of his singing. He's just going through the motions here. The tempo is a little to slow, the Fender Rhodes is a little annoying. I think the lack of an audience is also affecting his performance. I'd be willing to bet they didn't rehearse and that he only did one take. I'm going to have to give Ole Blue Eyes a C- on this one.
@Magikawp I don't think that's Jobim. Its Vinicius de Moraes, the guy who wrote the lyrics to the song. He was also a musician and wrote the song with Jobim.
Wow. I have never heard Frank sound so uncomfortable. I like how he tried to mimick Astrud's accent. Shoulda stuck with "Fly Me to Da Moooon." Go back to Vegas, you drunk hack. hahahaha
My apollogies, but, if you really want to play bossa nova like a brazilian, at least you will need a guitar player from Brazil, because, play Bossa WITH PICK its a crime. And.. to sing bossa loke brazilian.. yeah.. born in Brazil pretty, so you'll get the MALANDRAGEM.
I never expected to hear anything from my man Frank that was anything less than perfect but this is not quite there. End of the line, one more throw of the darts at the charts... I cant listen to this without thinking of Astrud's melody
I love this song, also the version with Frank Sinatra, but this performance is so clearly playback, does nobody here see that he is singing before the time and often not moving his mouth in the right way...? It's a pity... really! Nice song anyway, Brazilian song writers are great! I also saw the real girl from Ipanema once in Rio, around 1999. I voted dislike for the bad performance, sorry!

@Gongolina15 you do know, that it is common ESPECIALLY with youtube videos that audio and video are not in sync...and also: when he sings: "evryone goes ahh.." the "ahh" part is fucked up every time, do you really think they would take such a playback?
Hi my name is Frank Sinatra, I don't have to sing the real rhythm for any melody because my voice is pretty good...fuck ball, please sing to the melody so you will sing your songs the same more than 3 or 4 times in your life...
@spitoncat franks not as his best here but shiyyyyt that guitarist did a beautifull solo ey. he sounds incredible on the "new york, new york" vinyl i have
The Brazilian singer, which plays acoustic guitar on that version, is called Antônio Carlos Jobim, or just Tom Jobim. He was, is, and will ever be one of the greatest composers of Brazil, or even of the entire world. And, if you guys want to watch that version, just search for: Sinatra & Jobim - The girl from Ipanema. Cheers from Brazil.
@ezial49 - Yes, Antonio Carlos Jobim was certainly the premier Brazilian composer of his generation, but let's not forget Luis Bonfa (Black Orfeus) and Juao Gilberto, who, I believe, provides guitar accompaniment to Mr. Sinatra in this video.
the 8 people who disliked this video are rubbish, they should listen to rubbish music like lady gaga or 50 cent .....leave sinatra and bossa nova music to people who appreciate it
@JohnnyRawhide That version is probably the version with A.C. Jobim and it's in Portuguese. I agree with you, this is a very bad performance by Sinatra!
True, what's sad about it is that Frank does a decent version, then it's still better then singers you hear today in live tv shows like eurovision songcontest, melody festivals, etc.
Again that just showcases what a huge talent he really was.
@Reaper1984 yup, but sadly this isnt the best version, i know there is one of him that is a duet, he sings some parts in english and then the other person on brazilian or portugese, not sure, still sinatra was both the voice and the bird of the mafia, shame he died, recent music could use some lessons from him
can someone get the original Frank Sinatra version of this song onto youtube?
