the real magic here is the emotional story at the begining about the rose petals. when they are produced at the end it triggers an emotional reaction. the rest is just sleight of hand and a simple way of making it look like he loses her card in the deck...
@bep205 I'm afraid he is, dear fellow: From a telegraph interview: "He’s not the loner he was: his partner, a graphic designer, has lived with him for two and a bit years. (Brown is gay, and publicly ‘came out’ last year.)"
@andrewxc1335 why does he talk about it there or something? but the thing is, i dont mind if hes gay.. its his decision and all that but you wudnt think he was, he dsnt look gay lol
But yes, Trick of the Mind includes just about everything about him that made him who he is today, including his "happy, pappy Christian" days. If you watch "Messiah" and read Trick of the Mind, you can really tell what he used to believe really disgusts him.
@bep205 The manipulative behavior of the Evangelism movement, mostly; including his former usage of the phrase, "I'll pray for you," when he was being told about something that he didn't approve of.
There's at least one secondary trick going on there, I bet he would have ended with someone asking to give him a kiss almost every time he performed this.
@jessicaharkin his parrot was called figaro before the sleight was created, He named it after it because he is rather fond of both the parrot and the move :P
Haha yeah I know, I'm not really very interested in being a magician I would just really like to know how to do this trick because it's so beautiful, although I would love the ability to make my own tricks.
Whats the point of knowing how its done...that information is only useful if you had the skills to use it.....there are hundreds of tutorials on youtube for every sleight he does...buy a deck of cards and learn everything and make up your own routines if the methedology interest you so much.

You say "Please do not post any methodology, this trick is to be enjoyed."...but the enjoyment from magic tricks is understanding the methodology. Without that, it's all the same. Trying to figure out the techniques used, and then discovering the actual techniques, is what makes magic interesting. Otherwise, every magic trick is just like a mystery novel with the last 10 pages missing. All buildup and no payoff.
To truly enjoy a magic trick is to both not know how it works and to not WANT to know.
Imagine reading the last 10 pages of your mystery novel first... The rest of the book would be pointless.
Having said that, I concede that a truly great trick is one that gets-one-over even on the people sitting there desperately trying to figure out what's going on, rather than just letting it happen.
Actually, I spoke incorrectly. There are multiple ways to truly enjoy a magic trick, dependent on the viewer. Some viewers truly enjoy magic tricks by not knowing and not wanting to know. Some viewers (like myself) truly enjoy magic tricks by wanting to know and then knowing. I was just driven to comment by the implicit assumption in the comment "please do not post any methodology, this trick is to be enjoyed" that somehow knowing how a trick is done is diametrically opposed to enjoyment.
That analogy only makes sense if you don't see the magic trick, but once you've seen it, it is disengaging to not read the last pages (or at least try to understand the methodology of the trick).
To enjoy a magic trick is to try to understand how it works, or at least, that is what Derren Brown says (in Tricks of the Mind, the book), and what I agree with.
"Trying to figure out the techniques used, and then discovering the actual techniques, is what makes magic interesting." If you post the techniques, people can't work it out for themselves.
I find Bugbread's opinion that "Magic is only interesting if revealed" shocking - But, I don't blame him for his opinion (although I DO disagree greatly) - You see, for BugBread to have that opinion that a puzzle needs solving, he must have been presented with a puzzle.
A Magician's job is not to present puzzles, but entertainment, to cause spectators to enjoy the experience so much their too distracted to worry about methods. So perhaps, it is 'magicians' to blame.
He's gay and a brilliant role model. Google uk search for atricles talking about his "perfect boyfriend". I can't believe i have thumbs down for saying that!
Afraid that it's just the performances, but there are also bits that they cut out for TV (for various reasons, some stuff doesn't translate very well to TV and sometimes it's just a time thing)

Surely the fact that more of the posts here are talking about his sexuality than the trick itself proves the point that the press etc would have labelled him if he'd have come out at the start of his career?
Yup. I just found that out recently. My brother pointed out the irony: he's so good at reading other people, but took 37 years to work out that he fancied men.
.....or its just not an area of his life he wanted to share with the public - he has had a long term partner but if he had made that aspect of his life public - it would have altered people perception of him and his craft.
you can just see the head lines "gay magician derren brown said......."
they havent written that now - as he delayed mentioning it,
however
if he had come out earlier, before he made a name for himself and gained diffrentiation and respect for his act - then it would have been an all to easy lable to use (esp from the gutter press).
by keeping his personal life to himself for so long - he has become well known entirely on the merits of his skills, knowledge and writeing.
This way he's viewed as a magician who is gay not as a gay magician
I think you're too optimistic. While I'd gladly throw a coming-out party for him, I do agree with Paul that it would have served only as ammunition from his detractors. Derren Brown was already being slagged off before his sexual orientation was publicly known; only fuel to a malicious fire.
The Sun wrote an article on him titled "Derren: Im a mind bender" about his coming out - so I think that proves how low the gutter press will go - they'd actually contacted him on the premise of discussing his new TV series.
%100 agree~!! look at adam lambert, the amazing amercan idol guy who can hit those crazy notes. everyone is about how he is "gay". if that had comeout later, it wouldnt have been that way. i dontknow..... its true, magician who is gay, and gay magician are two different things. and its his life, his business, not like he was hiding it :P
Umm... more pan-sexual. Bi-sexual implies that the someone prefers both sexes. Pan-sexual is where sex simply doesn't matter.
If you think about how to you hair colour probably isn't the biggest defining factor as to whether you like someone. It's more of a general characteristic. Pan-sexual people see gender as just another characteristic. I hope that makes sense. Lol.

quite. oddly for youtube comments there is a general theme here.. that of beauty. Jacks reaction sums it up for me, 'oooh thats lovely'- isn't it just. my compliments to Mr. Brown.
aw thats a really easy trick, just dont pay attention to anything he says, watch the video again on mute and watch his hands as he grabs a handful of petals from his pocket and distracts her at the end, his fist is closed to hold in all the petals. Its all slight of hand.
I agree, his sleight of hand is amazing and watching the experience that his audience feels is incredible. On that note, this trick is one of the most artistic pieces of magic I've seen.
Well... he kinda has a boyfriend - a small problem with that line of thought, but I kinda see what you mean. But to me, less non-human, more superhuman.
I really have never thought he was gay, when he "came out" I thought it was a load of nonsense, He did nothing but talk about girlfriends many, many times.
also in last weeks lottery trick he said "disregarding the bonus ball which is usually for women & gays"
It doesn't sound like something a gay man would say!
he is a very charming & sexy man & i'd love him to do that trick for me!
Aah but he also said to a woman in the latest show that looking down her top "does nothing for me". and he actually said on twitter "I am gay." So pretty much he's a full on homo. Yay!
Few people are gay when they're six. I mean, some know even then, but more realise it later on, in their teens. So a six-year-old isn't thinking about the girl in the playground as a sexual thing, just a person he likes, and he wants to show that with a rose. Rather sweet.
A nice thought for women out there - but he belongs to the men of the world - sorry ;)
Besides, I'm not sure he's 'gay' as such, but just is currently with a guy.
I mean to say that I don't think the sex of the person matters so much to Derren. So he might date a woman at some point. He might date men, it all just depends from person to person.
Or at least that's what I think. I might be very wrong =)
u can figure it out if u watch the vid closely, but great showmanship

I agree, his sleight of hand is amazing and watching the experience that his audience feels is incredible. On that note, this trick is one of the most artistic pieces of magic I've seen.

so he BECAME gay?
ArcticSheep 3 years ago
Well, I don't think he's gay as such, I think he just prefers men. So he's more bi-sexual/pan-sexual. But I don't have any hard evidence for that.
Ageofrequiem 3 years ago
I think he is more asexual. You know, because he isn't human and such...LOL.
AthynKronos 3 years ago
Well... he kinda has a boyfriend - a small problem with that line of thought, but I kinda see what you mean.

It doesn't sound like something a gay man would say!
he is a very charming & sexy man & i'd love him to do that trick for me!

i think he must be bi sexual instead. i don't know though.
felic70 2 years ago
Aah but he also said to a woman in the latest show that looking down her top "does nothing for me". and he actually said on twitter "I am gay." So pretty much he's a full on homo. Yay!

Few people are gay when they're six. I mean, some know even then, but more realise it later on, in their teens. So a six-year-old isn't thinking about the girl in the playground as a sexual thing, just a person he likes, and he wants to show that with a rose. Rather sweet.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
?, gays aren't people! they're acid breathing space mutants:p
P.S. awesome trick there

Maybe if she hadn't laughed, he'd be straight now?

A nice thought for women out there - but he belongs to the men of the world - sorry ;)
Besides, I'm not sure he's 'gay' as such, but just is currently with a guy.
I mean to say that I don't think the sex of the person matters so much to Derren. So he might date a woman at some point. He might date men, it all just depends from person to person.
Or at least that's what I think. I might be very wrong =)
