The Killers wrote and recorded this song as a DEMO before they had a record deal when Brandon was about 22 therefore his voice wasn't trained like it is now. Plus the song is raw and un-edited as they didn't have the production team and recording studio they have now. That's the nature of a DEMO, it hasn't been perfected like an album.

If that isn't good enough, read the rest of the 200+ comments. They don't seem to be doubting it's origins.

Just because his voice hadn't matured into the thing it is today when they recorded this song, it doesn't make the FACT that it's THEM playing any less true. Its nice to know there is others out there that like The Killers as much as I do. Ever since Hot Fuss, there has never been an album or a single I haven't purchased and loved regardless of the critics terrible tongue and lack of musical taste. This single is incredible (as is all that they do) and I can't wait to see them in concert when they come to Chicago again. The Killers are by far my favorite band of all time. Great song.
