Actually, CMD (the command prompt) originated from OS/2, a collaboration between Microsoft and IBM. A rift developed between IBM and MS, and Microsoft split from the collaboration taking a lot of the OS/2 technology and using it to develop Windows!
@bristowman he is right microsoft didn't. .cmd is acses to the root DOS operating system. Mycrosoft had bought DOS and called it MSDos. DOs is not made by microsoft.

its windows control prompt, type cmd.exe into run or on vista just on start search cmd. I spun the globe with microsoft encarter thing.
