Judging by the indictments alone, the Italian mob still has more of a presence there than the Russians, the Chinese, or the Albanians. Not really even on the radar as far as the U.S. is concerned.

There isn't a single industry in New York that the mob controls like they used to. In the 1990's they lost control of the garment center, the Javits Center, the aiports, the food markets, waste hauling, etc. They are still involved in construction, trucking, the waterfront, and garbage but on a reduced scale. Habeas Corpus is simply a motion filed by a prisoner or their attorney arguing that their imprisonment has come about by legal error; the argument being that they should be released from custody. Today it is often easier to convict mobsters. One reason is because of the RICO law. Another is because there is an automatic bias on a jury's part when they understand the defendant to be part of organized crime. What to study depends on what part of the CJ system one would want to work in.
