I enjoy all the videos of this production individually, but I can't help but think the lead soloist is always overacting. He never seems to really get what he's saying, looks too caught up in the music.

He's inconsistent, it seems. There are moments in the song he looks like he really feels it (from an acting perspective) and times he's so off the mark. But if you ask me, in a show like this, YES of course the acting is important... but it's definitely way more important you sound good as long as your acting isn't laughable.

There's a difference. Because white is considered normative in this country, a white presence on stage adds little additional meaning. A black presence does add something, since this black experience is something that an audience can draw meaning from.

A black person singing about being on a ship suggests an image of the slave trade, which deepens the meaning of the song.

That said, I do think the song is fine to be sung by a white person.

the song is about christopher columbus sailing to america, hence "on the deck of a SPANISH ship in 1492" (which is the year columbus sailed). so it is really just as appropriate, if not more so, to have a white person sing it.
