  • Amazing! Like this piece. I play Erhu, and know how unbelievable it is. The instrument is specially taken care of by moving the 千金 to a unusually high position, allowing the range of the tones to be wider than normal Erhu.

    This is an excellent implant!!

  • @elinaliu

    It is 千斤, not 千金

  • @elinaliu I think in western... it is called the harmonics... all string intruments have that....

  • machines

  • 功力何等深厚...

  • wow....speechless!!

  • What amazing work! He'd have some massive wankers cramp after that.

  • @Chritipa looollololololololo

  • 两根弦就能创造出如此美妙的音乐,太棒了!

  • the reason they didnt use a chinese orchestra to accopany the soloist is bec.the music is originally scored for a werstern orchestra. In case of the music the key of the music might not suit a chinese orchestra bec.some of the instruments of the chinese orch.are not chromatic.

  • 真是太棒了!沒有文字可以形容!只有專心的聆賞!

  • why do they use a western ocrh as accomp. and not use a chinese orch instead

  • 每次听到他用二胡演奏这曲我都感叹哪。。。

  • SO COOL :)

  • wow what a creative arrangment haha :)

  • THAT IS COOL AND AWESOME AND AMAZING

  • amazing!!! 很感人!!!眼泪往心中流去。

  • I like it!

  • 这太牛比了,本来就惨,加上二胡更惨了~~

    谁敢比我惨!

  • can find cd?

  • bravo!!!!!

  • Ahaha, brilliant

  • 強!

  • amazing!

  • Fantastic!!!!!

  • So amazingggggggggggggggggggggggggggg

  • Blavo!

I play a four strings violin, but I threw myself at his two strings erhu.

  • This guy is known for having done a number of improvements on the erhu, including expanding the range (built a taller stem) and improved the resonance box design so it sounded fuller and better than the more traditional instrument.

  • I'don't know about that. Thanks or your reply!

  • OH? why is it called er hu then?

  • er hu is the translation from Chinese.

er (二) means two, that means it has two strings. hu (胡) is the type of that instrument.

  • @leophyter er...

Not quite, er, although it is two in the chinese language, but in this case it simply refers to the range of the instrument, with Gaohu having high pitched notes, and ZhongHu taking the role of the viola. The Er in Erhu implies that it belongs in between...

  • It so cool how this whatever istrument can play this. WoW. I'm Amaze

  • It's called "er hu". Er means 2 in Chinese, referring to the 2 strings. Hu I don't really know, perhaps referring to that little box thing on his lap that the bow goes back & forth against. It's a Chinese folk music instrument. Amazing play... Lang Lang's father also plays it. They did a duet at Carnegie.

  • er from er-hu doesn't refer to the 2 strings FYI.

Interesting...

  • It's lucky that i know to read mandarin. Yes, I agree with you.

  • 高胡的音比二胡高五度

    叫胡的原因是此琴由胡人傳入

  • nice

  • 好勁呀!!

  • 8 months!!!! Wonder how long it'll take me to learn it on my violin.. This is really a great piece

  • i just finished learning this song on th erhu... its really really hard but quite fun.

  • unbeliveble

  • Oh man! This guy is good! My friend who plays the violin told me that this is a very difficult piece to play ON the violin. But this guy makes it so easy on the Erhu which has only 2 strings. Gosh.

    Bravo!

  • Truly amazing! Speechless!

There are so many well-known Erhu performing artists. But I've never heard anyone who can play a difficult piece like this one nearly as good as Erhu Master Xu Ke, who is by far the best super-player.

  • 刘佬佬

  • One of the most difficult pieces to play with a violin, ask anyone who has ever attempted to play this. Then trying to play it with an instrument that has only two strings and do such a magnificient job? Unbelievable, amazing, magnificient, you name it. The execution, the orchestration, the conducting,....I have viewed this a dozen times and each time worried that the delicate instrument might break...oh man.

  • amazing indeed! just got till 7:50 though..

  • Wow, amazing!

  • Sarasate's eyes are popping out!!! This is some chinese gypsy air!

  • at 1:34 if you listen to the real song there was supposed to be a pizzacato (or however you say it) plucking part..

lol he was like =( i haz no pluckz!!!!

and later there were some more that he couldn't do lol...

    the conductor was funy

I THINK IT SOUNDS BETTER ON THIS INSTRUMENT THAN VIOLIN THOUGH

  • holy fuck that was awesome

  • This is way harder than on the violin, running down the strings is crazy due to the distance between the notes.

  • well Paganini always cut off a pair of strings just for show off , sawed them before concert they popped off in public terrified tthe audience an he continued with one or two strings the erhu has only two string that means this guy is Paganining

  • This erh master is not human!

  • wow that's amazing, i'm starting this on violin and i already feel it's hard! never thought this was possible...

  • The violin is a very strong instrument. Which is why it can take the song so well.

But the erhu looks so much more delicate and there are only two strings instead of four to take the strain.

So I just thought that the erhu might be slightly weaker.

  • lmao wat? thats impossible man. wow so i didnt know those instruments actually played real notes, he's probably the first person ive seen that gives that instrument any credit (sorry i dont know its name). i take my hat off to u mr. chinese man. as would sarasate. sarasate would also spit in the face of helmsdeep84 and call him an arsehole.

  • real notes?

  • "real notes" were made up a couple hundred years ago. A violin has never played them if you take into account the continuity of the frequency as represented by RR (the real numbers say).

  • it's sad that 二胡 can not do the pizz :(

otherwise, this performance will be perfect.

  • AMAZING!!!!

  • omg... this iis fantastic

i've been trying to play this piece on er hu for ages andd still struggling with dhe ending...

  • That is amazing!

  • That's so amazing!

I'm surprised the strings didn't collapse or break with such amazing playing!

  • Awesome Job playing this song on the erhu! It is unbelievably hard on the violin! So I am very impressed.

  • music is music, regardless of what instrument u use, as long as it brings out the 'zigeunerweisen style', i dont think sarasate will mind.

  • then a lot of people have had heart attack.

  • I am not a professional but Xuke using a 2-string traditional Chinese instructment to achieve such a level is simply amazing.

  • wow, it's nice! eerie feel to it, but very good.

  • awesome

  • 哇!! 太神了 開了眼界

  • HOHO.

    I'm a Chinese.

Personally speaking, it is not the best version of Zigeunerweisen on erhu.

I've got another one by a female chinese musician . hers is the best.

  • hey, i'm a chinese too. and i play violin.

i know who ru talking about. i think she is just playing to express her MUSIC by her exaggerate moves and face expressions, and it's unnecessary for performance. a truly musically is not perform like a stage actress.

this Erhu musician is the best, including his technigues and musicianships!!! He is just too amazing more than we can say!!!! you must watch 許可 play butterfly lovers! he is the best one in all player including evry violinists!!!

  • ok lar, but 嚴潔敏's butterfly lovers also quite goood

  • Yes. 嚴潔敏 is also a singularly outstanding and truly amazing Erhu player. Do you know of a site where I can watch her play Butterfly Lovers? Thanks.

  • Well, I have the recording of her butterfly lovers. Could post it on mediafire if you want to.

  • Yes, please. But how would I access to mediafire? Thank you.

  • Unbelievable!

  • Such a strange instrument, but such a magnificent sound.Awesome playing.Thank you for posting

  • To a chinese, the Gusle is a strange instrument.

  • great!!

  • great!

  • simply magnificent.

  • Semplicemente meraviglioso.

  • Magnifico pezzo suonato stupendamente con

    questo meraviglioso strumento. Onore all'artista

    per la bella esecuzione.

    Molte grazie del video.

  • good......

  • great performance but bad video, the sound does not match the video!!

  • Good.

  • Tak to je dobra halucinace....

  • much prefer sun huang's performances, ash

  • This makes Sarasate ever the more sorrowful in a different morning. Such that breakfast might be left for dinner.

Again the last part of 'the caffeine' saved the day.

  • heh some of the notes in the faster part have been changed a little. BUT still amazing!

  • Bravo!!! XUKE I give six to that. I have great respect and admiration for chinese people. A great race.

  • Who gave this less than a five?

  • Amazing!!!

  • 太神了

  • is just amazing what his doing with that beutiful instrument!!!!!!! God is real!!!!

  • unreal...

  • just perfect

  • すばらしいです、いいものを見せてもらいました。very good

  • Just great. Wonderfully played with a classical ancient chinese instrument.

  • This is just awe inspiring

  • this is absolutely beautiful... thanks for posting it!

  • HAHA! i started cracking up when i saw him play this, because its so darn amazing! i always knew that the er-hu was cool, but not THAT cool, pretty awesome.

  • This just had dawned on me, what the violins are missing in Sarasate.

  • this is amazing. i had no idea the erhu was capable of such range and dynamic. i am pleasantly surprised. just for a taster though, check out the violin rendition by anne-sophie mutter. it's arguably the best one out there. both mutter and this man are incredibly musicians.

  • who says u can't do pizz on the erhu? there are many erhu songs which has pizz, for instance: sunshine on tashkorgan, sai ma(horse racing), carmen fantasy, etc

  • it's amazing.

but.. can't you do pizz on that instrument? :P

  • ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!!

When i saw the title I was like, 'BULLKRAP'

    Zigeunerweisen on ERHU?? LOL ROFL

but turnsout stunning and absolutely BEAUTIFUL!!!

  • my sister played zigeunerweisen on violin when she was fourth grade and was interviewed by a chinese tv channel. it's a pretty difficult piece.

  • Fantastic!

  • I'm...speechless. I doubt I will ever witness a better performance of this piece.

  • OMG AMAZING!

  • More than amazing! He is unbelievable! Loved every minute.

  • He is not a man. He is a God recarnate, one of the Chinese Ancients who created the world in the beginning of time and infused it with the music of Gods.

  • are u mad?

  • wonderful...ive heard lang langs dad play this in the new york subway 4 years ago before lang lang got famous, lol, and he didnt play it nearly as good!

  • HOLY C*AP

sorry i just had to cuss

cz this person is like.....OMG so good....

  • i'd like to see a violinist play this piece on only two strings. haha. just curious.

  • Amazing technical skill and musicianship.

As pointed out before, this is a zhong hu, as evidenced by its lower pitch. That just makes the high parts all the more impressive.

  • This should still be a erhu. The size of resonance box is bigger than a normal erhu but smaller than a standard zhonghu. I think that it is special designed by this musician and the G and D strings are being used here. In this case, we called this a low pitch erhu. Finally I am glad that most of you enjoy the performance.

  • I dun tink it was designed by him bah. I mean, 二泉映月 was composed b4 this was transposed over (I think).

  • Sarasate'd have enjoyed this interpretation.

  • I have to admit the intonation of the erhu makes it a bit difficult for me, but that's not the performer's fault! To be honest, I think Sarasate would have loved it. This is a magnificent performer, orchestra, and conductor. I'd like to see more from them.

Do you have the Butterfly Lovers?

  • I have the Butterfly Lovers by this musician. It is ape format around 200mb. Mail me at my gmail account with prefix stevenckcheung to tell me how the file can be transferred to you.

  • he is awesome!!!

  • furchbar. tut mir echt leid. aber es muss nicht sein. e gibt doch grenzen...

  • this is zhung hu, not erhu...the inner string of erhu is D, but this one is low G

  • I cannot believe what I just witnessed. Perfect wow.

  • this is so amazing. but they should get "chow chow" to conduct this piece, eh?

  • fantastic! Do you the Mo Chou Maiden Fantasy by Xu Ke also? Thanks.

  • Pablo de Sarasate

  • Who is the composer?

  • Musical & technical perfection. Touching & sentimental expression of lyrical theme, beautiful imitation of sobbing. Simply brilliant!

  • WoW!

  • Dear lord that is awesome. This man is my hero.

  • Amazing!!! just amazing!

  • perfect fingering. Great repect for his skill

    from Denmark

  • o ne lan :)
