Who cares if it did or did not get an Oscar...what matters is that this movie was made and it's a superb movie. An Oscar is not the be all or end all.....look at Shawshank Redemption...another great movie that was barely noticed in the Oscars. This movie, The Mission, touched my soul as a teenager and now as a grown woman it inspires me to act in kindness daily with those around me. To be bad is easy...it be good takes effort...but its a choice we make.

Fact is that Marquês the Pombal banned native american slavery. So, if in the movie Marquês de Pombal sent a mensage to intimidate the juged, i have to assume that the story is in his time, so, the "protection against the portuguese slavery" is completely wrong, and therefore the movie is biased.

@lusoreis I Will Fight No More Forever is really good if a bit old. It's about Chief Joseph. Geronimo american legend is really good too although you can really see Hollywood's point of view in the film. I believe Geronimo would be a lot better if they it weren't for red tape and the makers trying to be politically correct. You should watch Pow wow highway it isn't about war, it's about Indians living in Idaho during the 80's . I personally think that pow wow Highway is a great movie.
The actor playing Father Provincial is listed as Tony Lawn, he was actually Msgr Tony Lawn, a Catholic priest who lived in south London and attended the RC needs of inmates in HM Prison Brixton in the late 60s and 70s.
You might want to check out boulevard nights which was a classic lower film that started a lot of the Chicano life style from back in the days. I have many friends who would not agree with the film title you given it based on the style of the movie.
In my opinion this is the best movie ever made: BEST EVER MADE. Nothing comes close to this, such dramatic story, with lots of action, and a big truth, us portuguese and spanish where really bad when it was the conquer times.

A very good film, although it falls somewhat short of its full potential in my view.
Also, the actor who plays the stocky noble who serves as one of the primary antagonists just doesn't work with the rest of the cast very well to my eyes (and especially ears). I'm not sure if it's the caliber of his acting or the accent or what, but it seems that a different actor could have improved the film, especially at the end with the Cardinal, which is to me the moral core of the film.
Jesuits were always expelled by corrupt leaders from countries for the good they did. Explaining ideas through art and music, etc and education should be remembered even today, eh?

I just found out recently that I have Brazilian Indian ancestry, which could explain why I can't help crying when ever I watch this movie, or even just the trailer. Here in the US the CD comes with another CD which is a documental of how the movie was filmed. In it they stated clearly that they had used Colombian indians and the movie was filmed in Colombia, except of course where they show the waterfalls of Iguazu. En el dicen que fue filmada en Colombia, usando villas e indios que viven en Colombia.....Yo tampoco sabia hasta que vi el documental.....

Para mi opinion una de las mejores peliculas de la historia del cine por muchas cosas:interpretaciones,guion,direccion,fotografia....y lo mejor para mi sin duda su espectacular Banda Sonora que es una joya.Una de las mejores BSO que se han compuesto.Gracias Ennio Morricone por esta maravilla.Que injusto fue que esta pelicula no se llevara ni un Oscar,ni sikiera a la BSO....

La escena donde de niro rompe a llorar arrepentindo y obtiene la Redención y decide cambiar su vida es PRECIOSA ... : ) para ser el SXVI que no habia apenas derechos lo que hicieron estos hombres de España es simplemente admirable , son todo un ejemplo para nosotros ( un ex-alumno de un colegio jesuita español ) saludos a todas las personas buenas y de fe : D !

A very good film, although it falls somewhat short of its full potential in my view.
Also, the actor who plays the stocky noble who serves as one of the primary antagonists just doesn't work with the rest of the cast very well to my eyes (and especially ears). I'm not sure if it's the caliber of his acting or the accent or what, but it seems that a different actor could have improved the film, especially at the end with the Cardinal, which is to me the moral core of the film.

very interesting movie.
Jesuits were always expelled by corrupt leaders from countries for the good they did. Explaining ideas through art and music, etc and education should be remembered even today, eh?

I understand you, but Jeremy Irons plays as a Spanish Father(Padre Jesuita) or eventualy Italian in this movie -The names(Padres) wich they play and act, are spanish or of latin european.
They were(in fact) in majority Spanish, some Portuguese, Italians among other Europeans serving Jesuitic Missions, depends if were under Spanish or Portuguese rule or geographic location.
British(English in particular) fiction Caracters or Historical Figures do not apear in the movie.

I just found out recently that I have Brazilian Indian ancestry, which could explain why I can't help crying when ever I watch this movie, or even just the trailer. Also, I look at that little boy in the cross and can't help thinking about my younger brother, and all the little boys in this world that a few adults in all their ignorance hurt.

Here in the US the CD comes with another CD which is a documental of how the movie was filmed. In it they stated clearly that they had used Colombian indians and the movie was filmed in Colombia, except of course where they show the waterfalls of Iguazu. Aqui en los Estados Unidos el CD trae un anexo el cual es un documental. En el dicen que fue filmada en Colombia, usando villas e indios que viven en Colombia.....Yo tampoco sabia hasta que vi el documental.....

@perseopenelope Toda la razon, ellos fueron los verdaderos conquistadores, fueron quienes realmente se dedicaron a educar y por ejemplo aquí en Chile frenaron unas de las más grandes batallas contra los españoles...La Guerra de Arauco. Cuánto daría que tanto Católicos como Evangélicos de verdad aprendieran con buenos ejemplos y así ellos lo dieran...porque los ejemplos que dan en la actualidad, de bueno no tiene NADA!

It is sad that many many good news, works of love are just unsaid - but we hear the most often obout those priests who have harmed someone. There are always good and evil - in every social class. If we judge all upon evil ones we just cross out those who are really faithful, good.. Consider - isn't that true?

God appears among those unnoticed true working clerics without any renown - and those are often victims of other ppls evil (1.36/1.37) those are bearing burden - mark of f.e.: gay, spongers, moneygrubbers etc.

Pure Beauty. And what a pair of amazing actors: Jeremy Irons and De Niro. Plus the soundtrack . One of the best movies I have ever seen. Touching true story that happened here in South America. I am not talking about the two priests, that may be fiction, but the massacre of the indios. What a shame.

Película conmovedora donde las haya, sobre el sacrificio, la redención, los ideales y el perdón. Cada vez que la veo o escucho su banda sonora se me eriza la piel. Creo que este tipo de cine nos hace ser mejores personas.
