Damn, guys you were lucky!! Both of you should have spend more attention to the other. But the launch (pulling up the glider, twisting out and starting run) of the left pilot looks quite uncontrolled and unprofessional. Instead of correcting the glider when it pulls you to the right, you run after it and start in a 45° direction towards the hill slope, directly into the direction of the other starting pilot.
The INTERNATIONAL Rules of the air (colision avoidance) are both well established and fairly simple!
1) The aircraft ON THE RIGHT (i.e. Yellow) Has Right of Way (Yellow should maintain speed & heading).
2) An aircraft approaching from behind ('overtaking') is Required to remain clear of the aircraft in front, 'overtaking' rules require the aircraft to pass to the right (mainly due to 'line feature' rules Etc.)
3) 'Wake Turb' rules are stated for (bigger/heaver) aircraft but not for PG's
@T3rrymac: It's amazing how quickly things happen. I could't get by leg hooked into my pod when I took off and so looked down to see where it was, looked up and glider was crossing in front of me. All happended very quickly. as you guessed i tend not to do that now! :-)
Chad Bastian has a great way of launching: 123ABCD 1. chin strap? 2. two main carabiners OK? 3. Leg & Chest straps? A. Air? B. Being (attitude)? C. CLEAR!!!!!!!!? D. Radio check Valle is often a dangerous place to fly -- people are so excited THEY DON'T WATCH WHERE THEY ARE GOING!
@murrayhay Thought you might bite ;o) You are right about that, but the guy on the yellow glider should not have launched into the path of someone already launching.
Nobody really was really observant or clear enough. But on an unfamiliar thermic launch with the pulse racing...
Easy to see how it happens. I got tangled with a friend on launch last year so I know how easy it is. A moments inattention is all it takes. I will try not to do it again though.
Except of course if you look at the Video EVIDENCE in fact they BOTH launched at the just about same time! Neither 'launched into another', in fact BOTH had plenty of space to make a safe launch, however the Saltair Flag glider pilot of course ignored the International Standard Rules of the Air!
With a 'Duty of Care' on BOTH Pilots the Yellow PG Pilot would have been better to alter course 10-20* Right to improve seperation.

This film was taken with infra red at midnight yes? So neither pilot could see each other?

It's an inevitable situation neither one could have avoided. This is why blindfold paragliding never really grabbed me, just not my scene I guess.

The Nova is clearly in the wrong: Should have made a right turn to avoid collision. Glider with hill to the right (Scottish glider) has right of way.

You should just change startingplaces next time :-)

Never mind, at least it will keep Murray happy.

Hi Tommytipitcup
Examples of SAFE Aviation, and GOOD Pilot Judgment/Skills keep me happy....
Seeing a ?Scottish? Pilot display BAD Judgment/Poor skill does NOT 'make me happy' ;-)

Hi Dr Bob Beattie
Ref 'should not have launched into'...

It's 'cause people learn to drive on the wrong side of the road in Scotland. If you'd learned at Tory you would have blown your whistle.

@spinomattic
Wrong!!!
In Scotland you drive in the Middle of the road!
