YOU STUPID ASSES!! You really don't know that this is The Stanley Brothers?? &That the soggy bottom boys were an imaginary group made up for this stupid movie? GOD rest rest your soul Carter,& thanks forthe memories Ralph!!
@MoRockHound actually man of constant sorrow is a traditional song written by a guy named dick burnett in the early 1900's ..bob dylan did a version in the 60's..the soggy bottom boys was the name of the fictional group in the movie, the song you hear on the soundtrack is sung by dan tyminsky (sp?)
i wish o brother where ART thou was never made. ever old time song on thr has became...ohh that song from that movie. geez these songs have been around for forever. and gorge cloonie is not a good singer.
@banjotuna It was still a good movie regardless. If anything, the film brought more people to know this music and love it. Who cares if they aren't 100% correct on their history and origins? Plus, I'm pretty sure George Cloonie never actually sang for this film. They dubbed in another voice sounding enough like his.
This song was one of my grandpa's favs he passed away a month ago and this was played at his funeral. I think I've listened to this song once a day since. Love you Pa RIP, you taught me a lot and were a great grandfather.
My grandpa chose this song and I'll Fly Away for his funeral. He and my grandma used to listen to a lot of these old gospel songs when I was a little kid. It was a really good service.
This song was played at my pawpaws funeral by a group called bluegrass revival I love this song it is so beautiful everytime I hear it I think about him.
@jakewelty92 no matter what anyone says they believe in God their connection is what is lacking its not about perfect or good or evil its about faith the reason you find this song beautiful is because it tuggs at your heart because you long for a connection with a creator.
My grandparents used to sing this and all their other songs....papaw just passed away 2 hours ago, and as I was looking thru the songs, this one popped up RIP papaw
@steveshouse71 It's good to grow up with relatives that had a good grasp in music from a different age. My grandmother passed away recently. She wasn't the biggest fan of bluegrass, but she loved the Doobie Brothers, CCR, and a few other bands like that. Every time I hear one of those groups, it reminds me of her.
@steveshouse71 I know exactly how you feel I used to sing this when I was little, and my grandpa just passed away on the 9th of this month, just gotta cherish the memories and pray that one day we will meet again
I was born and raised in the Clinch Valley mountains of Tazewell County Virginia and have heard this song all my life but still it never fails to bring a tear to my eye. God bless Ralph and Carter Stanley.
I lost my eldest uncle a few hours ago and all I can do is sit hear and listen to music on youtube. It is comforting somehow even though songs like this one tug hard at the heart. I'll miss you uncle Gene.
I'm 39 and I approve of this song. That said, Ralph Stanley has worked so hard for bluegrass over the years, and a lifetime of his beautiful works should not be rated that "I am so young and even I listen to this music:" that is so not a comment on the artist or his music, it is a comment on your naive narrowmindedness that we should even care!
I was a christian for 25 years of my early life, i am no longer now. That said, i still understand the power of beautiful music. It represents a very strong emotional state that can illicit feelings of nostalgia, love, and even innocence. This song is incredibly beautiful and emotionally powerful without a doubt, but i understand this is also by design. As Ulysses said in the closing scenes of the movie "yessir the south is gonna change.... a veritable age of reason." We are still waiting.
@DarthDrizzt dude I've been atheist all my life and I understand the power of beautiful music!!!! You don't have to believe in god to enjoy great music
takes me back to when i was a little kid. every saturday mornin my dad would be sitting in his rocker and it was bluegrass all morning long :) good times back then
i know it sounds emo but i wish my life was like this song. almost over and looking forward to going to heaven. because i've been through so much, im not going to go into it but for example: lifetime of abuse, and im just sick of the cycle of life. up and down. sick of it. :( i wish i was this old guy singing
@Rachulie You have eternal life right now! jesus said he was eternal life and if that is true, and it is, you have eternal life right now, you don't wait for it at a later date, because you have Christ in you who is eternal life.
@jmac3480 I know atleast 3 people who need prayers! And I mean that in a good, inspirational way! This world has lost its love, and we need to all work to bring it back!
Nephews sang and played this on harmonica and guitar at brother's celebration of life service last month. This after baroque trumpet Handel's Messiah "The trumpet shall sound" &"I know my redeemer liveth" and a solo of the hymn "Abide with me." If there was a dry eye amongst the celebrants (including about every living Superior Court judge in Maricopa County) I didn't see it. God is good all the time!
I remember hearing this song in church years ago, don't get no better than this !! Listen close people there's only one way to get there ,see ya on the other side!
Something truely horrible has happened to music. We went from this to music made literally of just mindless screams and lyrics of rape, murder, and other disturbing things. I can honestly barely listen to old songs like this without getting depressed just because I was born in the wrong time. I should have been born in about 1940, but I got 1994.
@ledzepcanneverbebeat I have often said I was born in the wrong time too, I got 87 and would have been just fine in the 40's. You ever get a time machine come find me.
This song touches me deeply... When it comes time for me to go, I'd like to see an Angel band coming to me, I know that they exist, and they watch over all of us...
this song is the only one i ever heard my grandma sing...it is brautiful...she had that high..nasal..bluegrass twang...if you like bluegrass you know what i mean
I bought the movie just for these sorts of songs. What amazing music. To all those who have never watched O Brother Where Art Thou, you should, it's almost a monument to old-time and Bluegrass music.
This song is so awesome the Lord has brought me to listen and learn the words so I can sing this song at church with freinds and familie the very first time I have herd this song I was just amazed of how great and awesome God is and how the Lord can do for me and others so I enspirer a lot of people to listen to this song cause it is amazing . :) Always a girl that goes to kingston K-14 :) Shannah .G. :)
@EyrenSunchaser its true that they played this version in the end credits, but at the end of the actual film the little girls were singing it in the background while their parents were fussing about that ring x) then the smallest one at the end of the rope saw the guy on that push-cart thing on the rail going off into the distance singing the same song--awesome ending, weird/powerful to have the color fade to black/white too
@EyrenSunchaser the little girls DID sing the song in the movie, at the very end. before this version came on. please don't correct someone unless you're correct :p
