  • I agree that the system sucks! The reason that our laws change so slowly is because social evolution is a slow process.

These rights may not be realized in your own lifetime, but just like the rights of blacks, gays, and women, they will be realized one day.

  • They should watch the movie "Normal" with Tom Wilkinson before they shoot down transgender equality legislation. Maybe they could start to feel some shame for their prejudices. Instead they are happy to play a role where passion for tradition is standard. Sex ed starting around 4th grade should include lifestyle perspectives, and the biology behind them.

  • People are silly. The LGBT community sometimes discriminates against straights as the black community sometimes has issues with whites. People have a need to feel superior no matter who they are. I agree that children should be educated about LGBT, it's a shame that kids are allowed to be ignorant, it just opens to door for young straights to be hateful and young LGBTs to have serious identity crisises because they haven't been told about people like them.

  • Barney Frank's ploy with ENDA (and of the HRC and Dem. leadership, etc.) was to get a bill off the floor of the House for the first time. With or without the T in it, ENDA was dead after that. It had no chance in the Senate and Bush said he would veto it. So the passage in the House of ENDA, any ENDA, was purely symbolic from the beginning.

  • All of that said, I still think it was a wrong thing to do for reasons I gave in my own ENDA vid.

  • HELLS YA!

  • Im so stupid for asking this question..Are you a lesbian?

  • Nevermind that question..I decided to accually read some of the posts...~_^

  • Yeah. I've always wondered why we went one group at a time. Hm...

  • Hey baby, your hot, can we see you tits?

  • Uhh...no. I wouldn't even let YOU launder my bra...

  • c'mon baby, pleaze?

  • What about insubordination? Can a person get fired for that even though it is not technically poor performance? What about the employee who is great productivity-wise but steals from the company? I agree that EVERYONE has the right to employment regardless of their expression of gender or sexuality. But these are the fine hairs that lawyers split every day. They would have a field day with this and nothing would change.

  • Unfortuantely, lawyers spend their lives picking apart the letter of the law to overturn the spirit, and perhaps nothing would be changed, but it seems like a text akin to what i've written could create a tollerable work environment without having to deal with the current frozen-mollasses speed of human rights concessions coupled with the bullet-rate of human rights eliminations in this country.

  • Good point. A tolerable work environment is a must. I just don't trust our gov't to be competent enuf to pull it off. It's far more effective to work on a personal level. 25 yrs ago I was not closed-minded, but ignorant. I am sure I hurt ppl without knowing. It took a gay friend to set me straight (all puns intended!). If he hadn't taken a personal interest in opening my mind to the idea that u can be straight and still think there is nothing wrong with being GLBT, I would not be who I am today.

  • Don't get me wrong. Let law makers build sand castles. But if we want a sea change in attitude we have to work on a person to person level.

  • You are beautiful.

Trans-phobia is about the fear of change and the gender aspect of transgender is just another border some people fear.

I helped change the Anti Discriminination for Transgender people in Queensland, it took the fact that I almost lost my life from being denied medical attention because of my inter-gender history for this to happen and still, it almost didn't. The one true law of nature is change.

  • Austin, TX. passed laws that said they could fire smokers because they were likely to run up health insurance cost. Who is more likely to use maternity leave a protestant or a catholic? Who is more likely to get aids a heterosexual or a homosexual? Who is more likely to get heart disease a normal person or an obese person? If this trend continues it can be used to discriminate against people who thought they were protected.

  • In light of this information, there might need to be a clause stating: "Lifestyles or activities performed or maintained outside the workplace may not influence a decision to terminate an employee," but it seems sickening that we even have to write laws like this. The constitution was designed to enforce human rights, and somehow, it's failed miserably.

  • I really wish people would think "legal precedent" before they support laws. If you think of law as a mathematical equation If x can also be substituted with y,q, and z at some point it is likely to happen.

  • You are correctamundo as usual. I think that the reason it isn't already is because those with money and power fear what they don't understand. Also, they'd have to admit to themselves things that they don't even want to THINK about. 5 stars.

  • Interesting. I'm in.

  • I'm not sure why it isn't either.. it makes no sense. You can also fire someone for being fat or smoking!

  • I am SO sorry, I cannot believe that your government does have nondiscrimination legislation. I am so shocked Canadian governments covered this issue several years ago and as you suggest included a vast group of individuals often discriminated against including race, religion, gender(inc. transgender), sexual orientation, physical ability etc. etc. This is what has led to changes in Canadian marriage and family laws. America land of the "free" you are behind the times!

  • I'm very seriously considering getting out of this godforsaken land. The grand scheme i've cooked up in my head is finding employment in Quebec where i could learn french, and then moving to france, but this process would take a lot of money and a lot of time, and i'd have to find a way to convince the imigration department that i would be worth having in those countries (unless i got married, but i'm wary of long-distance relationships, and marrying a stranger is out of the question)

  • Yeah. I have been known to recommend to all unhappy citizens of your land refugee status, sadly our government won't except it, but it maybe should. " I am at risk of discrimination and unemployment leading to homelessness, starvation, a lack of healthcare and therefore impending death just for being myself" sounds like a fair reason to me.

  • The whole sick story makes me wanna puke. Did you see that artilce John Aravosis wrote? What a dick.

And then Susan Stryker shot him down.

  • I can see Aravosis' point in that trans and gay are different things, but i don't understand why he sees it as a conspiracy by the trans community to infiltrate the gay community. Then again, i think we're percieved as the KGB of the alternate lifestyle world if you look at the way we're portrayed in entertainment: costumed whores who will do anything to get in bed with an unsuspecting straight person.

  • Mmmhmm

Which is kinda of funny considering all the super effeminate queeny gay men that like to dress up in drag but might as well be wearing a bra at all times anyway

Its like "what are you trying to say here?"

  • Having known a multitude of trans and gay people, i'm 90% sure that most trannies like the 'same' sex (meaning straight within their birth gender), i've never had any doubts about liking girls, and most drag kings and queens do it for laughs and roleplay, but, ultimately, self-identify as their birth gender, and proudly queer. I've had a couple of girlfriends that had a thing for drag queens, but weren't lesbian by any strech of the imagination; it ended bitterly both times.

  • Its all very frustrating.

Especially when gay folks consider trannies as archiac and gender/social conformist.

Uh, no? Its not being gay and being in denial of it, its making your body conform to your brain D:
