I want to go it's completely public and planes land and take of daily. they have a surf bar where on that beach that shows the times of arrivals and departures
It's mainly (i think) because it was primarly a military airport area BEFORE being a civil one (one year later i guess, something like that)... So, at the time it was a military airport, being so close of a plage (that was, so, not a "public beach") wasn't a problem... If after, some idiot have the brilliant idea to take sunbath there... In fact, if it look dumb, it's absolutely not the fault to those who made the airport but those who want to be around..:-/
It's really fun to sit on the patio at the Sunset Beach Bar, listen to the pilot chatter and watch allo the planes land. You can actually hold onto metal bars situated on the beach at the end of the runway and feel the blast of the engines when jets are taking off.
It's a getaway at the Carribean, the island is called St. Martin (Sint Martin), with the surrounding islands of British Virgin Islands, Antigua and Barbuda, etc. The island is at the southeastern tip of Puerto Rico and north of Venezuela, surrounded by both Carribean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. Enjoy.
Ive flown into this airport, and its not so cool when your looking out the window and all there is is the water 30 feet below, then sea, sea, sea, sea, sea, sand, fence, bang your landed. Its pretty hairy.
OH I HAVE GOT TO DO THAT!!! they say that if you hold on to a fence while a 747 is taking off, your feet are lifted off the ground from the jetblast!!!
lol, i went to a beach like that but didnt know a plane was come'n cause i was listening to my mp3 and just about pissed my pants when i turned around and saw a 747 heading right over me lol.
Why werent you blown away? There is this TopGear clip on youtube where they drive cars behind a jet engine and they are completly blown away. Are the engines not on full power or something?
I work around Boeing 717 and 737 pilots all day, doesnt matter what kind of aircraft it is when they land they pull the engines back on power and coast in as soon as they get over the runway they put the engines at idle. the they touch it down and arm the speed brakes which are the little flaps on top of the wings
No on landing any aircraft the throttle is always brought back to idle (no power) to allow the aircraft to natually glide into the ground (basically sinking into the ground) the engines are creating no or very little thrust in idle so you are not blown away, very different story with full power like on top gear!
That is mad stuff man, suprised you dont get sucked up in the engine, i wonder what it feels like being onboard, if you dont know the landing strip you would think you are heading for the sand
i have always wanted to go there, i have landed in flight simulator x and 2004 in that airport, the only bad thing that happend was that my left wing hit a 747 holding short. lol
i live in india and the runway starts just beside a main road and the jets fly real low. i saw george bush landing also at march 1st. 747s and stuff go every 3 mins. ill add some video.
you know turbine noise isnt just loud. Its Extremely high pitched, at that range, for any longer than 10 seconds, will cause permanent hearing loss and damage. I remember flaggin over a BAE 146 once without earmuffs...oh dear me.
It's both exciting and unpleasant experience, you got to see the airplane at your reach at the same time giving out the roaring noise of its engine and blowing the sand to your face.
