Well.. I sure hope you know better now! I didn't see any shovels or probe, so I'm assuming none of you had any avi gear. And I agree that you should take an avi course, if you had, you would have been carrying avi gear, and would not only be able to recognize potential hazards, but would have avoided terrain like "couloir's" and chose a bare ridge if you were determined to go when the slopes were loaded.
You guys are lucky. You guys should know better than this being natives of the Colorado, home of the deadly continental snowpack. Get training, or get ready to write a letter to your folks explaining to them that you died because you are stupid. There's plenty of good mtn guides in CO that can you give you a weekend avi course.
@bigwallmaster take it easy man at least theyre not the stupid tourists from california and illinois who just willy-nilly try and climb longs peak accidents happen and no avalanche course automatically saves your life no matter how much you hope it will
@PimpTasticBling. Evaluating the safety of any snowpack starts many days before you actually plan to head out. Here's what I see in this video that are red flags: A plan that involves climbing a very sun exposed, south facing snow couloir!! Hello? Solar convection? All you is a bad layer of near surface facets for that heat snow on top to have a perfect sliding layer. And it appears a late start with relatively clear, sunny. skies.

u guys need to take an avi class. As the vast majority of back country travelers do. Climb Early! Dig a snow pit, test consolidation. Always travel with transceivers, shovels, and probes and know how to use them.
Snow in the tree branches can be a sign that there hasn't been enough heat to settle the snow pack. If you really have to go through an avo prone place taking shelter behind big rocks or ice blocks then speeding to the next one is one strategy that may help with a small avo. Good scenery.
Great vid - many thanks for posting it. Colorado!! I hope to visit this year. What an awesome place. You did a great job capturing the beauty of the place.
Good thing you ddn't just stand in the slide path while you checked each other out. A you really picked a perfect time of day for being in a slot like that. Was it about 11am, or was it closer to 1pm?
Insane. Great job capturing a very stressful situation. We were considering climbing and skiing Dragon's Tail that day...I wonder if there were other natural releases in the are. Thanks for sharing, glad you guys are in one piece.

I agree totally with what you are saying. Good points. Amateur mistakes made here. Always strive to be pro in the backcountry.
