tanks alright man, I know you just started but we did too on a fish only you should check are vid out, our reef tank has been together for a while but the fish only tank is a month old and killing it! We dint have half the shit you have and it's bomb!
hi there, u have an awesome looking tank...if you have any tips or suggestions for me check out my tanks i recently started on my channel! hope to hear from you soon...:)
I was wondering why your using bio balls and ceramic media as these by there nature produce nitrate, yet your using liverock in your tank and rock rubble in your fuge which do the job of the bio medias but without producing nitrate, so there is no reason to have the bio media in your setup! personally I would remove the biomedia slowly over a few weeks bit by bit as it will just make more work for your rock, trying to convert your nitrates into nitrogen gas.
hey man i got a question how do you get that skimmer to skimmer right i got a 125 supper skimmer on a 30 gallon and it over flows or it stays so low that it dont skim at all any help would appricate it o and when i move the down pipe for the difuser the level of the skimmer with change please help thanks...
@cOdGd7 Hey I saw your question wasn't answered yet so i thought I'd help ya out. check out LAFISHGUYS youtube channel, he builds reef tanks professionally even for some of the stars. Check out episode 88 of his little cheesy shows, he has some good info on skimmers... From what I saw there, if your skimmer isn't producing foamate than its probably just "idle" meaning its doesn't have any garbage to remove from the water... hope i helped...
wondering how the black sand is doin ya? I am setting up a tank and was thinking of using black sand. Does it look faded and would you do black again if you had it all to do over again?
how much did everything cost minus the tank. im thinking about converting my 55 gallon to a saltwater reef and im going to make my own rock and i was just wondering how much is all the filters and how much upkeep is involved?
@DANNYCOULSTON wher's your videos? this tank had 0 nitrates for a year... look at the other videos... and now its a 90 gallon everything DIY with a berlin style sump and refugium. if your gonna talk you might as well have something to back it up with ;)
Hey let's not flame people. However you are right. I would ditch the bioballs and rings and filter pad. Your live rock is your bio filter. Run carbon and NEVER run mechanical filtration in a reef. Unless you plan to change the filter pad out every other day or even every day then don't use it.
@fishtanksandkoiponds I have a fifty five gallonfreshwater with a fluval filter and I have live plants so I can't use algea killer. I use a UV sterilizer to keep floating algea low and then scrape the glass. I have been told that snails produce in very large numbers. Is this different than saltwater?
@ryjack26 sorry i just saw ur comment so you can move the convo onto the update... its a mag 700 so 700 gph but id say im only usind like 400 of it...
@fishtanksandkoiponds im planning on building a sump maybe this weekend...right now i just have a pwer filter (HOB) and it just isnt cutting it...i always have nitrate problems and i now also realize that i overfeed my fish (basically fertilizing the algae)
nice set up ! looks like you r off 2 a good start! i hav a couple of questions .. your tank has a lot going on 4 a 4 week old tank.1. how did u establish your live rock ,your 2 refugiums,n your wet dry n 4 weeks and, then add a significant amount of livestock? Did u use some type of bacteria additive ? thanx
thanks! oh yes i used supplements, i did 2 weeks with stress zyme shich completely cycled the tank and then i added a product that belive or not was made by my friend and completely innoculated my live rock with everything from bacteria to pods...
@kc999999999 what you heard is partially true. but, if you keep your bio balls clean then both the live rock and the bio balls keep your parameters perfect! if you don;t keep them clean then they will produce extra nitrate (but so will live rock...) lemme know if you need anything else...
@Darkice1291 sorry for the late responce your comment never showed up...that is one of the most debated topics in reef keeping.... i like to have both but you need to make sure that they are both clean!
yup :) the ammonia and nitrite levels hit 0 in the first couple days... then in about a week nitrates hit 0 so i started slowly adding livestock... this tank will be heavily stocked ass i am going to turn this into a full blown reef later on and put alll the fish into a 330 gallon fowlr... i already have a yellow and a hippo tang... haha
All you need is live rock and the macro algae as far as bio filtration goes. Bioballs are generlaly not used anymore as they can increase nitrates, also get rid of the ceramic noodles and sponges. Your skimmer should take care of anything else. BTW your stocking very fast, too fast for 4 weeks, take it slow. Don't add anything and slowly remove those materials i mentioned one at a time over a few weeks/months. If your water parameters are ok now, you should be right. HTH
In three days? in takes on average a month at least to cycle a tank. What makes it cycled? You have nirtate and no amonia/nitrite? Remember it takes around 6 months to a year for the tank to settle 100%.
i know that... i have plenty of tanks and work with aquariums... when you have an ammonia and nitrite SPIKE and then all the levels go down and nitrate goes up it is initially cycled. it takes a year for a tank to MATURE not to cycle!
what your hearing about is their metal halide ballasts, they are not to well circulated and most people replace them with ice cap ballasts. this light is workin fine for me now... these ballasts are so small that there is no way that they are a big fire hazard plus, i do feel cold air coming in and out of the housing due to the fans so that also lets me sleep...
may i make some suggestions i think you should get rid of your black gravel it makes your tank look kinda dull and maybe less liver rock it looks kinda cluttetered i like and try to avoid having rock touck the in sides sides of your glass also this can be fix by gettting rid of some of your rock

thanks a lot and i also have a anti siphon hole :) and about the clamps, theyv worked for now but for the future ill keep that in mind, or if i see rust ill replace them... THANKS!
Get rid of the bio balls, maybe then your nitrates will drop and all that algae will clear up

Hi
I'm new to the salty world. I must agree not to keen on the black substrate. Also doesn't all the bio media. Hold in nitrates?

Can I ask, Why the H*** do you need 200 snails?

@ZR3FR1K to clean algae, plus some die, some get eaten by hermit crabs for their shells, etc... when you get a large reef tank you'll see.

Nice job. If I may make some recommendations...
I would replace your metal clamps with plastic snap clamps. The metal has a tendency to rust out under your sump due to the humidity down there. I would also drill anti-siphon holes on the return rather than bet on the check valve working. They have a decently high fail rate and then tend to fail right when you don't want it to.
