How can he touch only 11'1 with a 43 inch standing vert. That means he probably has a over 43 with a one-step "runup"... he must reach very very low or the measurements are incorrect.
He jumped crazy high on that standing vert test by the way.
That's exactly what I was thinking.. should've used the vertec on the standing vertical too. Unless he has a dinosaur's reach and that increases his running vertical. I mean, is it even possible that it dropped?
@BreatheCreativity Dropped? Like the running vertical being lower than the standing vertical? I don't believe that's possible for an athlete because he's used to loading the tendons. It is possible for an Olympic lifter or someone heavy, but not really a feasible scenario for an athlete.

In SPARQ ratings for the 'level of athleticism' testing of NFL players Brian Clay is head and shoulders above all of them. He scored a 130, Johnathan Stewart of Carolina (who has one of the NFL's highest) scored 97. Decathletes are by definition the best athletes, and in effect they may be as well. No disrespect to Football, but I think people too often disrespect what is in many ways more demanding and grueling in the Decathlon. World class at 100, 200, 110 H, 400, Javelin, + 5 other tough even
@ VerraStrngNUCF: There is no 200m in the Decathlon. The events are: 100m, 400m, 1500m, 110m Hurdles, Long Jump, High Jump, Pole Vault, Shot Put, Discus Throw and Javelin.
I do agree with you that Decathletes are the best allround athletes. They should be. They are training for it (except for the change of direction speed part, which he didn't excell at).
The basis for ALL sports are running, jumping, throwing, and coordination. If you are talking about a specific sport, then contrasting athleticism, you are relying on a skill set. But from a pure athletic stand point, there is no comparison. Bryan Clay is the best athlete in the world, hands down.
Why do people compare Clay to Foot Ball Players?!? he's a freaking decathlete... just because he scored the higherst sparq score doesn't mean anything other than he's a Solid Athlete... It doesn't mean he can play in the NFL, it just means he's more Athletically Well Rounded... which is the point of this Video...
He is better in Athletic events than NFL players, however he doesnt have the skill or experience to play football. The point is that NFL players are marketed for being great athletes, however T & F competitors are actually the best in what is defined as athleticism. In the NFL the game is different, for example they do a 40 yd, a QB only has 4-5 seconds to get the ball off they dont need to run under 11 seconds, but they cant say they are better athletes than decathletes, even the best of em
yea what jsoulier1237 said is wright and canadiens our ecnomy is crashing but dont b happy bc if it gets to bad we will just invade you take ur shit and make you a state same goes 4 all of europe south america and africa hahahahah
ganjar 420 needs some love you guys, can't you tell? He's a NFL receiver, UFC pro, NBA and much more star! NOT. Wow, people are sure special on Youtube.
And tubenation21, I can see that you've got your mind made up about America already but don't think that ganjar420 is your average American.
hey buddy i hate to break it to u but your comment is fucken stupid... obviously he would get killed in all the shit u mentioned. he doesn't train for that... they just proved that his overall abilities are better then most athletes in other sports.. they didn't say he could just go out and be the best in any sport he wants... show some respect man .. this man trains harder then any athlete on the planet.. which was shown in beijing.. so dont talk okay .

First of all FUCK YOU buddy! I played football 11 years, flag football before that, wrestled 5 years, played baseball, basketball and boxed a handfull of years in elementary, started lifting weights when i was 14, and even did 1 year of gay ass track and feild cause my football coach wouldnt leave me alone about it. I am 5x the superior specimen of you, so shut your fucking mouth you pussy canadian.
lol your anger makes me laugh... wow you played 11 years of football woopdeedoo .. i've done all that shit you've done. you must be one of those asshole kids at ur school who thinks there big shit cause they play sports and thinks there better then everyone else. and your chirpin me cause i'm canadian EH !!! first of all ur economy is crashing, because you continue to keep shit disturbing in countries that dont need your help... so fuck you and keep up ur great work..
Clay is 5'11," 185 lbs, benches 355 and runs a 4.38 40 yd dash.. His SPARQ sport-specific football athletic test score of 130.4 is the highest ever recorded. Reggie Bush scored a 93.38. There are great athletes in football, but clearly you weren't one of them. You don't even know one when you see one.
What would happen if this guy was a receiver or running back in NFL? He would have his bones broken first time they caught him.
What would happen if this guy joined the UFC for some cage fighting? They would break his clavical?
What would happen if this guy joined the NBA? He would be towered over all day long and all his shots would be blocked if he can even dribble with cordination.
What would happen if this guy joined soccer of baseball, well not much to those sports so he would do ok LOL.

it seems like we all pretty much agree, a world class decathlete is a world class athlete, but without the fame and clothing lines. I did a few decathlons and they are not for the weak. 1 event you do bad in and you fall hard and fast in the standings. the decathlon is the best measure of athleticism i know of.
Decathletes are the best athletes in the world. Try competing in 10 events in 2 days and you will see how difficult it is. The Big 4 can't compete with decathletes. Recently the Wall Street Journal ranked the top ten athletes in the world and Roman Sebrle was number 1 followed by Lebron james. Roman Sebrle can throw a 16-pound ball the length of a 53-foot yacht. From a running start, he could leap over a two-lane highway. There is no question that Decathletes are the best athletes in the world.
Pound for pound Clay is much stronger than any juiced up NFL fatball player. He would also run away from them in a sprint of any distance. Nobody in the world possesses both the speed for a 10.36 100m while at the same time throwing the discus 55 meters. This is the whole point of the decathlon - athletic balance. And unlike the big 4 you can't be a fat f--k and still do well. Track and field is THE objective test of physical ability. There is no room for unfounded hype or bullshit claims.
Do not be putting down football players just because you were too small and weak in highschool/college to be on the team. This guy is a top athlete for sure, but a decathlete. 1 month in the NFL and he would be goin in for about 5 corrective surgeries afterwords if they didnt mangle him before. Don't gotta be a bitch just cause the only sport they'd let you do in school was toss a frisbee maybe. Don't fek with football....
6'5" 215-220lbs with 5% bodyfat is not unusual. The reason great decathletes do not play football is not physical.. it is a matter of preference. Football is a mob sport, therefore you don't get the full glory of a victory or the full blame for a loss. You never really know whether it was you who won or your team. In track YOU KNOW. Thus track holds great appeal for the individualist. PS - WallStreetJournal chose Roman Sebrele...chubs.
I had a choice between playing D1 Football and D1 Track, for the Decathlon. I ultimately chose the Decathlon (which was a hard decision to make), and I compete at a big time D1 University. Compared to the Decathlon, football is certainly not that difficult, and the football players I work out with know it. I'd assume you're thinking that my football buddies are pussies, but I go to OU. The Decathlon, my friend, is the standard for pure athleticism.
Sorry, dude, you're just plain wrong. Brian Clay is a better athlete than any top athlete in the NFL, or in any other sport. I don't mean a bit better, I mean a LOT. The decathlon is *THE* standard. Take your BEST NFL athlete, train him, and you MIGHT get a national-class decathlete. Not a superstar, but just national class. In fact, the world's 50th-best decathlete will beat an NFL "athlete" any time. Every day. Ever year.
yep your right, decathletes are a whole different world of freak athletic ability. I've seen some good collegiate decathletes and pros would make them look like chumps and these guys were simply amazing to watch and they were not anywhere near someone like clay.
they are athletes but not as talented in football, baseball, and hockey players are.. and yeah chumps.. a 300 pounder vs a 110 pounder small toothpick looking guy .. you no the little guy would get fuckd up anytime
clay isn't that small almost 200lbs, very lean. Those other sports jut take more specialized skills-I'm sure bryan could have made a good football player, but choose to be best in world at decathlete-, I'm saying the best decathlete is the most ATHLETIC person on the planet.
in fact, in SPARQ's football specific test Clay recorded a score of 130.40, the highest ever recorded, so yeah, there is good reason to believe he could have been an awesome football player
the thing is tht 300lb football player wouldnt have the ability to keep up with clay ever this guy is a freak id like to see a football try and do a decathalon cuz they couldnt but a guy thts 200lb could play football plus the 300lb football player would never be able to catch him so he actually wouldnt get fuckd up
His 100 meter time would surely top any football player who is not active in T&F (and may regardless, even most college sprinters in 100 cant run as fast). He is strong (shot put and discus), great throwing mechanics (javelin), has much better endurance than NFL players (1500 meters). These guys are phenomenal atheltes, and while they dont get put on ESPN or NIke, maybe that helps maintain the purity of the sport.
ok...i'm a collegiate decathlete and a football player. Decathletes are far MORE athletic, but when it comes to a football field, everyone would be able to catch him. Even if football players are slower, we are still able to take angles and catch people twice as fast. A 250lb linebacker would indeed fuck up Clay. But its simply because Clay is not trained to deal with football. You can't compare apples and oranges.
@decadyne I agree and disagree. I was ranked 37th in the world when I was an all american in college. I had a 40" vert, 11'2" standing long jump - am 6'4" and can dunk from the free throw line - So I understand what you are saying. But there are some NFL athletes that (even though they may not be able to static jump like me) can beat me in a decathlon(except for the pole vault, haha) on a few years training. I think I am pro caliber athlete - but those guys go where the money is - makessense
rbgdup, the only thing you have proven in your comments is that you have absolutely no clue about what it takes to be a decathlete or any athlete for that matter to win gold at the olympics you have to be GREAT at ALL 10 events not mediocore. less than mediocore is the term i would use to describe your knowledge of sports and more than likely your athletic ability. track is the ultimate test of pure raw talent and athletic ability. your just an idiot man im sorry
compared to specialist, there performances in each event respectively are nothing better than mediocre. whats the argument. Any javelin thrower could crush him, any true sprinter would, lets just say make a mockery out of him, and any high jumper would do the same as well. spratap was wondering why decathlons aren't as entertaining, and it is quite simply because specialist do so much better in there respective fields.
You don't get it. Here is why he's the best athlete. How many discus throwers can run a 10.4 100? how many hurdlers can throw a shot 53 feet? How many Javelin thrower can hurdle? How many long jumpers can throw disc? not many. He does all of these well. Thats why he's great
he does them all relatively well, not well. he isn't a great runner, he is an awful hurdler(i don't even think he cleared one), and he is mediocre at all of the field events compared to the best. It isn't fun to watch someone who is mediocre at everything, I'd rather watch someone who is GREAT at one thing.
yes compared to the best, but my point is to do all of them as well as HE does them makes him great. For instance, I am a 58m plus discus thrower, but I cannot come Close to jumping 25 feet in the long jump, or running sub 10.4 in the 100. So to do all of them is GREAT. Call him an awful hurdler, but I don't think you, or most people can run 13.7 with exclusive training, let alone with 9 other events to worry about.
i understand that it is an amazing feat to do all of those things relatively well, but all I am arguing is that it is 10000000000X more entertaining to watch Usain Bolt run a 9.6 than Clay go 10.5, or Dayron Robles go 12.8 than Clay go 14.1, or Stefan Holm go 2.39 than Clay go 2.10, or...you get my drift. The reason why decathletes are "slept on" is simply because, people would rather watch mastery.
It's obvious you haven't been around the decathlon. Mastery of his event is still mastery, it simply takes a little more understanding of the subtleties of the decathlon to appreciate it.
I know what you mean stockwizard. If you were to bring Ladanian Tomlinson, Reggie Bush, Calvin Johnson, Devin Hester, or any other top-notch athlete in the NFL they would all run faster, jump higher, and be stronger than this guy.
I realize your comment is 2 years old, but it's backwards. You have absolutely no clue whatsoever what kind of athlete Brian Clay -- or any elite decathlete -- is. Give any one of those 3 years to learn the events, and I will bet you any amount of money you want to wager that they wouldn't crack the top 50 list in the world. You really have absolutely no concept of the quality of athlete these people are. It's somewhat sad.
The only reason the "big 4" get paid so much is based solely on their profitability margins. No body pays money to watch track and field. With no revenue they cannot pay as much..that by no means demotes the skills and abilities of track stars....you think tyson gay wouldn't be one of the best receivers in the nfl?..trust me he would make devin hester look like a middle schooler
Decathletes definitely deserve more respect, but somehow watching decathlon events has never been as interesting as other track & field. Not sure why.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
i am sure Clay is a great guy and I hope he wins GOLD, but there is no way you can compare him to most atletes of the Big 4 -- football, basketball, hockey and even baseball. Look, they get paid MILLIONS for a reason. If this guy was handed a 10 million dollar contract to be a running back, of course he would take it -- but he wasn't, and he won't. I don't care if his heart rate is 10, VO2 Max 100 and he can run a 3 minute mile, great athletes gravative towards the dollar signs, if they can.
you are a dumb ass the amount of money an athlete makes, does not dictate how great of an athlete some one is. Pro athletes make a lot of money because they demand a lot of money and a lot of money can be made off of them, most other sports like track and field typically are done so primarily out of the love of the sport. Yes you can compare him to those other athletes, because he works his ass off as hard if not harder, to bring up money as an issue makes you an ignorant douche
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
you are a complete idiot. only you moron would do the exact same job if offered less. listen you douche, go back to McD's and make your 4 bucks while the rest of us make the real money.
For Clay his sport is not a job it is a passion, He more than likely has a great job that also pays for his training because he is part of an even more elite echelon of athletes, and they are proud to support him. The fact that you would bring up an idea that if some one make minimum wage they aren't making real money does make you a douche, and i doubt you make "real" money any way, douche,
Yes, Clay is not good enough at the big 4 to play those professionally. However, there is also no way that any athlete in the big 4 could challenge him in the decathlon. I would argue that decathletes can legitimately claim to the best "all around" athletes.
Track and field should get more attention in the US. With proper meet management at the pro level & with proper marketing I could see it becoming somewhat popular.

World class at 100, 200, 110 H, 400, Javelin, + 5 other tough even
VerraStrngNUCF 2 years ago

TheNxtgenpro 2 years ago
Why do people compare Clay to Foot Ball Players?!? he's a freaking decathlete... just because he scored the higherst sparq score doesn't mean anything other than he's a Solid Athlete... It doesn't mean he can play in the NFL, it just means he's more Athletically Well Rounded... which is the point of this Video...
Nateltrxc 2 years ago
He is better in Athletic events than NFL players, however he doesnt have the skill or experience to play football. The point is that NFL players are marketed for being great athletes, however T & F competitors are actually the best in what is defined as athleticism. In the NFL the game is different, for example they do a 40 yd, a QB only has 4-5 seconds to get the ball off they dont need to run under 11 seconds, but they cant say they are better athletes than decathletes, even the best of em

400hurdle 3 years ago 2
Decathletes are the best athletes in the world. Try competing in 10 events in 2 days and you will see how difficult it is. The Big 4 can't compete with decathletes. Recently the Wall Street Journal ranked the top ten athletes in the world and Roman Sebrle was number 1 followed by Lebron james. Roman Sebrle can throw a 16-pound ball the length of a 53-foot yacht. From a running start, he could leap over a two-lane highway. There is no question that Decathletes are the best athletes in the world.
fumadorrico 3 years ago 2
Pound for pound Clay is much stronger than any juiced up NFL fatball player. He would also run away from them in a sprint of any distance. Nobody in the world possesses both the speed for a 10.36 100m while at the same time throwing the discus 55 meters. This is the whole point of the decathlon - athletic balance. And unlike the big 4 you can't be a fat f--k and still do well. Track and field is THE objective test of physical ability. There is no room for unfounded hype or bullshit claims.
laskji 3 years ago
Do not be putting down football players just because you were too small and weak in highschool/college to be on the team. This guy is a top athlete for sure, but a decathlete. 1 month in the NFL and he would be goin in for about 5 corrective surgeries afterwords if they didnt mangle him before. Don't gotta be a bitch just cause the only sport they'd let you do in school was toss a frisbee maybe. Don't fek with football....
ganjar420 3 years ago
Actually most decathletes are quite large.

MOC817 3 years ago 2
Sorry, dude, you're just plain wrong. Brian Clay is a better athlete than any top athlete in the NFL, or in any other sport. I don't mean a bit better, I mean a LOT. The decathlon is *THE* standard. Take your BEST NFL athlete, train him, and you MIGHT get a national-class decathlete. Not a superstar, but just national class. In fact, the world's 50th-best decathlete will beat an NFL "athlete" any time. Every day. Ever year.
That's how it is. Guy, you just need to drop it.
decadyne 2 years ago 2
yep your right, decathletes are a whole different world of freak athletic ability. I've seen some good collegiate decathletes and pros would make them look like chumps and these guys were simply amazing to watch and they were not anywhere near someone like clay.
desembodic 2 years ago
they are athletes but not as talented in football, baseball, and hockey players are.. and yeah chumps.. a 300 pounder vs a 110 pounder small toothpick looking guy .. you no the little guy would get fuckd up anytime
banditjr519 2 years ago
clay isn't that small almost 200lbs, very lean. Those other sports jut take more specialized skills-I'm sure bryan could have made a good football player, but choose to be best in world at decathlete-, I'm saying the best decathlete is the most ATHLETIC person on the planet.
desembodic 2 years ago 2
in fact, in SPARQ's football specific test Clay recorded a score of 130.40, the highest ever recorded, so yeah, there is good reason to believe he could have been an awesome football player
toby0cooper 2 years ago
the thing is tht 300lb football player wouldnt have the ability to keep up with clay ever this guy is a freak id like to see a football try and do a decathalon cuz they couldnt but a guy thts 200lb could play football plus the 300lb football player would never be able to catch him so he actually wouldnt get fuckd up
clayhighschooltrack 2 years ago
His 100 meter time would surely top any football player who is not active in T&F (and may regardless, even most college sprinters in 100 cant run as fast). He is strong (shot put and discus), great throwing mechanics (javelin), has much better endurance than NFL players (1500 meters). These guys are phenomenal atheltes, and while they dont get put on ESPN or NIke, maybe that helps maintain the purity of the sport.
VerraStrngNUCF 2 years ago 2
ok...i'm a collegiate decathlete and a football player. You can't compare apples and oranges.
sportspadawan25 2 years ago
@decadyne I agree and disagree. I was ranked 37th in the world when I was an all american in college. I had a 40" vert, 11'2" standing long jump - am 6'4" and can dunk from the free throw line - So I understand what you are saying. But there are some NFL athletes that (even though they may not be able to static jump like me) can beat me in a decathlon(except for the pole vault, haha) on a few years training. I think I am pro caliber athlete - but those guys go where the money is - makessense

rbgdup, the only thing you have proven in your comments is that you have absolutely no clue about what it takes to be a decathlete or any athlete for that matter to win gold at the olympics you have to be GREAT at ALL 10 events not mediocore. less than mediocore is the term i would use to describe your knowledge of sports and more than likely your athletic ability. track is the ultimate test of pure raw talent and athletic ability. your just an idiot man im sorry
tamuktrack 3 years ago 2
compared to specialist, there performances in each event respectively are nothing better than mediocre. whats the argument. Any javelin thrower could crush him, any true sprinter would, lets just say make a mockery out of him, and any high jumper would do the same as well. spratap was wondering why decathlons aren't as entertaining, and it is quite simply because specialist do so much better in there respective fields.
RBGdUP 3 years ago
You don't get it. Here is why he's the best athlete. How many discus throwers can run a 10.4 100? how many hurdlers can throw a shot 53 feet? How many Javelin thrower can hurdle? How many long jumpers can throw disc? not many. He does all of these well. Thats why he's great
fturner92 3 years ago
he does them all relatively well, not well. he isn't a great runner, he is an awful hurdler(i don't even think he cleared one), and he is mediocre at all of the field events compared to the best. It isn't fun to watch someone who is mediocre at everything, I'd rather watch someone who is GREAT at one thing.
RBGdUP 3 years ago
yes compared to the best, but my point is to do all of them as well as HE does them makes him great. For instance, I am a 58m plus discus thrower, but I cannot come Close to jumping 25 feet in the long jump, or running sub 10.4 in the 100. So to do all of them is GREAT. Call him an awful hurdler, but I don't think you, or most people can run 13.7 with exclusive training, let alone with 9 other events to worry about.
fturner92 3 years ago
i understand that it is an amazing feat to do all of those things relatively well, but all I am arguing is that it is 10000000000X more entertaining to watch Usain Bolt run a 9.6 than Clay go 10.5, or Dayron Robles go 12.8 than Clay go 14.1, or Stefan Holm go 2.39 than Clay go 2.10, or...you get my drift. The reason why decathletes are "slept on" is simply because, people would rather watch mastery.
RBGdUP 3 years ago
point taken. and I agree, I was just trying to get u to understand how great of an athlete Clay is
fturner92 3 years ago
It's obvious you haven't been around the decathlon. Mastery of his event is still mastery, it simply takes a little more understanding of the subtleties of the decathlon to appreciate it.

@RBGdUP
It's somewhat sad.
decadyne 1 year ago
The only reason the "big 4" get paid so much is based solely on their profitability margins. No body pays money to watch track and field. With no revenue they cannot pay as much..that by no means demotes the skills and abilities of track stars....you think tyson gay wouldn't be one of the best receivers in the nfl?..trust me he would make devin hester look like a middle schooler

i am sure Clay is a great guy and I hope he wins GOLD, but there is no way you can compare him to most atletes of the Big 4 -- football, basketball, hockey and even baseball. Look, they get paid MILLIONS for a reason. If this guy was handed a 10 million dollar contract to be a running back, of course he would take it -- but he wasn't, and he won't. I don't care if his heart rate is 10, VO2 Max 100 and he can run a 3 minute mile, great athletes gravative towards the dollar signs, if they can.
stockwizard 3 years ago
you are a dumb ass the amount of money an athlete makes, does not dictate how great of an athlete some one is.
