The original name was duck tape because in WW2 the U.S. military needed a tape to get water out of their cases, so they asked a certain company to make. They did and then because the tape was waterproof people began calling it duck tape. After WW2 the houseing industry was booming and someone figurred out duck tape was great for connecting heat and air duct together so it became known as duct tape. And, 'duck' IS NOT the only brand. :)
